***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 3 new videos every week! Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we transition from city dwellers to full time homesteaders!
We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.

Here in South Louisiana okra is a must have for gumbo. We cut and cook down huge amounts of okra in large roasters along with onions, peppers, and tomatoes. Once cooked and cooled, it's bagged and frozen for gumbo season aka fall and winter. (Adding a small amount of vinegar cuts the slime and you don't taste it.)

@@caterchatter4671 I cook down the okra with seasonings, once cool freeze the okra in ziplocks. The gumbo is whole other issue. LOL you can Google a recipe but I'll tell you that other than a few bites of tomatoes cooked in the okra, no other tomatoes should be added to a gumbo. As for meat, I use okra in a shrimp or chicken gumbo.

I put white vinegar in water, put the amount of okra I plan to fry in it , let it set a few minutes, slice it right out of the water, without draining it. You will be pleasantly surprised at how much less slimy it is. Salt & pepper it put it in a zip lock or paper bag with a mixture of half corn meal-half flour, shake it until all the okra is coated well, put it in hot oil and fry until browned & crispy. You have to take it out of the bag before you put it in the hot oil, tho. 😆 We like it with a few jalapeño slices, & yellow squash slices added to it , before frying. I hope this works well for any of you who try it. Many blessings from a “ well seasoned “ okra eater. Kevin and Sarah, you are such a great couple. You have so much to offer. We are “old timers “, but we learn so much from you. Samantha and Grace are so blessed having you for parents, as you are blessed with such sweet daughters. May GOD continue to bless you all four. 😊 🙏

Chris Smith, who works at seed savers exchange wrote a book called The Whole Okra. One thing i remember is that if you know you’re going to be out of town you can pick the blossoms and eat them. But if you come back and still have okra that are too big, you can slice them and remove the seeds and use them like couscous. Also, you know how the lower leaves drop off as the plants grow taller? Well you can use the stems of those leaves as compostable straws as they are naturally bacteria inhibiting.

I dehydrated okra for the first time this year, and we really love it! We also love it frozen, and pickled. The best variety of okra that we love is Baby Bubba from Burpee. it is a huge producer and it is also a dwarf plant. The only drawback is that for the first part of the season, you have to bend over to harvest the pods. Baby Bubba has out produced all other varieties that we have tried over the years. Love the videos and the great content. Keep up the great work.

You guys are right on with that okra. Okra grew very well in our desert garden and produced to the point we got tired of picking them almost every day, we cut the okra and froze it just as you but without the breading. The best however was dehydrating them as they take up less space when dried. there is no need to refrigerate and they last for years when vacuum packed. We are currently eating dried okra today from vacuum sealed jars put up in 2008.

It was to be my "intro" dehydrator to be sure i liked using one before springing for an Excaliber. 10 or 12 years later i am still using my Nesco.. i bought 4 extra trays and a lamp timer, so i could set the amount of time i wanted.. i still check it periodically, in case things dry faster than i anticipated... i've even made beef and turkey jerky.. You can take the dehydrated okra Slightly dampen them, then flour. (I use a spray bottle of water to moisten the dried okra. ) then using heated oil no hotter than about 260 degrees F. and fry them. Hotter and they will burn quickly. You have great fired okra chips. Season as you like as well. Parmesan is good. This works great for zucchini ans summer squash. Try spraying the dried chips with oil then using the air fryer on about 260+, less than 300 F..

Pickled okra is the best. I love both methods that you two have done. I will definitely be watching my veggie stands next summer so I can try this. Thank you. 😊

I’ve seen on a couple other youtubers that they trim off the leaf right under the okra to help with airflow and the plant puts more energy into growing the next okra instead of the old leaves.

Thanks for the dehydrating and freezing ideas. I love okra so much I've always been able to ignore the slime but now I can have the okra without the slime. God bless you and your girls.

Hi. I'm another okra fan. I love fried okra year round. When I can find it at the grocery store, I buy it by the pound, wash it off, slice it and put it on a cookie sheet. Put the cookie sheet in the freezer for about an hour and then package it. Thaw it out when you need to use it in the future. My family has always done it that way. I think it's better than breading it before putting it into the freezer. Add a quick tip to those people who like to grow okra. It has a very tough seed skin. The day before you plant it, place it in water, some people say buttermilk, and let it rest for at least 24 hours. Then plant it. For those of you using buttermilk, rinse off the milk before putting it into your seed starter pots.

You can use the dried up pods in dried flower arrangements. The purple is especially pretty.

I am so glad I came across this video. I was wondering how I would freeze my okra this year, and now I know. Im growing Okra for the first time. I love breaded and fried Okra and I cant wait to preserve some for over the winter months. Thanks you guys. Your videos are just the best.

Okra and tomatoes stewed together is really good. You can also slice and freeze the okra without breading it for soups and stews for later in the year. Going out to pick some right now after watching your video. Just made some beef and vegetable soup last night and added a few thinly sliced okra into it. Delicious☺🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

Hi, love your segment on preserving Okra, I'm in Australia and it's new to me but I have gotten some in the fruit store over the last couple of years and used it in gumbo etc. I like it. Will see if it will grow in our climate this summer (Victoria). Just my thoughts on your new cow and future cows. I was brought up on a dairy farm in NZ. My dad got a couple of hundred Milking Shorthorn Cows towards the end of our time milking. They are red in colour and are good for beef as well as having very high milk fat (good for butter). They also have a bigger udder so you can get better volume if needed. Their udders are in between a Jersey and a Friesian, good sized teats. Also, they are a docile cow so easy to work with. Being a bigger frame cow you have less birthing difficulties as well which can be a problem with a Jersey when you put them to a beef breed to get a better calf for harvest. Don't know the ease of sourcing them in the USA but just thought I would put this out there for people homesteading. Cheers

Thanks! I looked at the growing zones for Victoria and it looks similar to the south eastern part of the U.S. like Georgia and Florida. That’s about perfect for growing okra. Plant okra seeds when you would put tomato plants in the ground. Have fun and enjoy!

I dehydrate okra with a dash of sea salt and chili powder mix it is awesome. I do some plain for soups and combo. Some I dry and grind to add to soups to thicken.

Okra is a southern vege people are brought up with. My dad was a northerner, and hated okra slime, and my mom from a southern family and loved okra. A trick for reducing the sliminess is to cut up your okra and soak it in vinegar for half an hour. Then rinse it and pat dry before cooking. Finally, pre-cook the okra at very high heat by sauteing, roasting, blanching or grilling. Then add your cooked okra to your recipe and there will be hardly any slime at all. This kept a certain amount of peace in our family. LOL

Enjoyed this video! I like okra. Most in my family don't. But i've only had it fried or in gumbo. Dehydrated to add as a thickener sounds great, especially for the health benefits. Thanks for educating this northerner.
