Always owned Subaru’s, never had issues. Currently a 2016 Impreza and 2020 CrossTrek. Every manufacturer has recalls. This current one is a PVC valve that may fall apart inside the engine. Easy to inspect and replace. If they can't find the pieces, they’ll replace the engine. Regarding the CVT’s, bullet proof, even got a letter from Subaru saying due to rumors on the web that the CVT’s are not good, they extended the warranty for 10 more years to prove otherwise! Class act in my books.

@red diamond71 I've got 225k miles on my 2010, engine or head gaskets havent been touched. Head gasket issues are rare on anything 2010 and newer. @@woooose I did a lot of research before my GF got her 2018 outback. The older models aren't half as reliable as the newer ones. The outbacks as of late are very reliable and out perform Honda and Toyota. It's my opinion Subaru's cheaper models are less reliable, but that's based off of visual inspection and not research. 2015 outbacks had more problems than later years and still had less reported problems than almost any vehicle. Top that with 30+ MPG AVERAGE and AWD. The competitors cant get 2WD crossovers to get that, or an AWD system to go 200k.

Scotty has always had an issue with Subaru. Statisics and real-life do not seem to matter. If Subaru made a car that never broke down, he'd find one that had been in an accident and say "See?!!! I told you so!!!". He ignores the fact that Subaru corrected its head gasket issue YEARS ago. Ignores the fact that subies stay on the road and with original owners a very long time and, if sold, hold their value very well. Why do you think that is, Scotty? Most people hate bad quality. Are you saying subie owners are idiots? You must be, because they keep their cars and still buy subies when they need another. FFS, anyone can say, “I told you so” when something actually happens lol. I guarantee you Toyota has had its own slate of recalls. Listen, I’m not a fan of Subaru when it comes to anything but all brands have their problems. Yes the boxer engine isn’t great but it’s also had thousands that last hundreds of thousands of miles. That’s why you see so many WRX and STIs on the road that are definitely OLD. My father had a 1998 Subaru Legacy wagon that lasted until just last year with over 400k miles on it. And, his current Subaru has 250k miles. Take care of your car, know what maintenance has been done to it, do maintenance when it’s due or sooner and you can’t go wrong. Sometimes you get unlucky. That’s life.

Sometimes I think scotty just needs video material. Most manufacturers have had major engine issues. Its nothing new. BTW I now build subarus. Very loyal customers.

The Subarus he’s complaining about were from 2000 to 2003 or 4 I think. They had a fatal head gasket flaw and had a nasty tendency to blow. There was a silent recall issued by Subaru where they replaced them with a new multi layered gasket which fixed the flaw. Unfortunately for my friend since his dad never took their Subaru back for service it failed at 123k miles. I found out up to 99k they would replace them for free. Anyways his was fatal and like all HG fails hydro locked the engine. The one I had ( 86 GL) ran great but had a bad valve lifter really it just ticked now and again. That car was running the day I found the rear crossmember was half rotted away. My dad says baby it, 8 hours later I hit a bump and the left rear and right rear tires are sticking out at 45 degrees and I’ve got death camber.

@red diamond71 well I can’t say 300k but the nuclear pharmacy I worked for bought cars or racked up tons of miles. I was a passenger in a newer Chevy Malibu with over 306,000 miles on it. First night on the job the transmission blew up. Had a dodge caravan with over 250,000 on it. Told them the front end was falling apart. They ignored me till it spat out the tire, spindle and half shaft and collapsed on the Highway. The Cruze they gave me had bad brakes with over 150k on it and I slid down a hill and crashed. So you can get higher miles on vehicles

I’ve owned both Hondas and Subarus and in my experience the general build and reliability is just as good. My current Impreza with 260k has fewer issues than my sister’s Civic with 180k. Scotty has a blind spot. Not every Toyota is a gem but the ones that don’t last somehow don’t count with him - and neither do the Subaru’s that make 300k.

You can tell this guy operates a lot on intuition and not on objectivity. He's right sometimes, probably most of the time. But he took one minor recall and generalized it to say the reliability of an entire car manufacturer is bad throughout it's entire history "since they started using those (Boxer) engines", so yeah, it's entire history. And then justifies his statement by saying they are not a "quality" car company anyway. Whatever that means.

Fun fact... Toyota and Subaru share many parts in their vehicles makes sense. Toyota owns market share with Subaru. I've owned 2 subarus never had an issue. Both went well over 200k miles with no issues. Ford makes the best truck but nobody ever disses them when they have a recall every year. Every manufacturer has had a major recall. Why is it that when Subaru has a recall it's a huge deal. I understand this recall is a big deal but most of the time the dealers around me replace the whole engine without question. Hell Toyota's last major recall was a huge safety risk but everyone shrugged that off. Now I'm not a huge Subaru fan, but I do think they are good cars. I build them so I know what they are made of. I also built Toyota's and I can tell you quality management between the 2 manufacturers and basically the same. Just FYI

Oh boy. Boxer engines have different characteristics. Can’t treat those like Inlines or Vs. The oil, If you overfill, you are gonna kill it, under-fill, gonna kill it. Don’t change the oil, gonna kill it. That engine works against gravity. But if you know what you are doing and take care of them, they last a long time. In my opinion, price to price, Subaru makes better quality product than any of their competitors in the same class. That AWD is very sophisticated too. Only a few R8 and 911 comes with something similar like that.

Honestly, I think some people are too hard on Subaru. Living in the northeast like me, AWD is pretty much needed in the winter, and as far as affordable AWD Subaru pretty much has the market up here, as can be seen all the Subarus driving around. Just want to put this here. Not saying that Subaru isn't wrong. But Scotty is being really disingenuous here. 1.) He doesn't mention that its the PCV valve recall, just some unnamed engine part. 2.) He doesn't mention that this is at least the second time he;'s made a video about this. 3.) He doesn't mention how late to the party he is, the PCV recall was known about for a long time, its just that the announcement and the commencement of service are different points in time. 4.) He's misrepresenting the scope of the problem. He makes it sound like all of the engines are going to explode and disintegrate; for the vast majority of people this will be preventative and done on their next oil change interval. 5.) He's back to making false equivalencies; a faulty party does not make a bad engine design; a faulty part is a faulty part.

Back in 2014, my wife bought a 2003 Subaru Outback Limited Sedan with 108K from the original owner. She owned the car for five years and put 50K miles of average city/highway driving on it. In that time, it needed: wheel bearing, ball joint, multiple sets of CV joints, multiple sets of sway bar links/bushings, catalytic converter, a ball joint pinch bolt which snapped on her while driving, and a bunch of other misc. crap. We sold it last fall after adding up everything it STILL needed - $2K+ worth of work to keep it safe and reliable, which was as much as the car’s worth! All the while, my 2003 Honda Civic has been practically flawless, currently approaching 215K miles!

More room, too. Last summer we loaded over 1500lbs in and onto it, drove from WI to the OR coast, down the coast, and back. Averaged 27-29mpg the entire trip. AC on the entire time. Engine lost practically zero power after the trip. Transmission shifting like new. Funny. He just recently made a video about Subaru and talked about how they were decent vehicles and had a perfected AWD. He said people love them for the AWD. Now he’s telling everyone he warned that they are horrible vehicles

my 2011 Outback with the 2.5 is still going strong at 162k,besides regular maintenance only thing i had go wrong was the CVT failed, which is common and Subaru replaced it under warranty. i am a Honda guy to the core but after owning my Outback Subaru now has my loyalty as well.

Between all the Subaru's we owned we drove about 890000 miles with hardly any troubles at all. from what i read between the lines Subaru vehicles seem to handle the long distances like we drive them a lot better then short shopping trips where the engine never warms up. Anyway, i think for us personally we would be worse off with 95% of the other brands that are out there than with Subaru. The brilliant Subaru AWD system makes the experience even better when driving on snow and ice for six months out of the year like we do.

Lol my Subaru WRX was nothing but problems, now it's either Toyota and Honda manual, no joint custody with mechanics anymore

Happy New Year Scotty! I was at Auto Zone the other day to pick up something I ordered. I was looking at their filter section and saw that all their filters are STP, oil and air. I asked someone about it and was told that there is one filter manufacturer that makes all the filters now. I found that hard to believe so I hit the Internet. Wix filters are made by Wix. Fram filters are made by Fram. Purolator filters are made by Purolator. Napa filters are made by Wix. STP filters are made by... don't know, but STP is owned by the Clorox company. Was that person talking out his fart blower? :-)

One of the main reasons people buy Subarus is safety. I deliver to a COPART recycling yard. Every Subaru that is in there it is easy to see that the occupants of the car walked away from the accident. Te passenger compartment is always intact especially from a front end collision. This is not true of all manufacturers. I have seen many examples with my own eyes.

I don’t know Scotty, my 2009 Tribeca has 232 thousand miles and still going. I couldn’t get that from my 93 Camry that I also bought brand new.

The Captain I agree they start leaking bad around the 200,000’s. Mine leaks oil but I added some stop leak and seems to be working well

My brother in law gave me a Suburu Justy with almost 200k on it. I put another 40k on it and gave it back after I bought a Sentra.

@Joe Joseph Some of the manuals are junk too. My 2016 Crosstrek had a terrible 5-speed. First gear too short. Fifth gear too tall.

Hi Scotty, I love watching your videos. You remind me a lot of my father who was a mechanic for over forty years. He passed away last year. Watching you is like still having him around. I have a Mustang GT/CS. It make an annoying, humming noise while driving at interstate speeds. It lets up a lot when I let off the gas. I’ve taken it to three mechanics and a exhaust shop and no one can find anything wrong with it. I’ve had many mustangs and other vehicles and haven’t heard anything like it. I sure miss having my dad around. He’d figure it out in a few seconds. Any tips you can give would be appreciated. Thanks.

@@andrealmoseley6575 I am surprised by that. I thought Mazdas were good cars. What type of Mazda do you have and what problems are you having? I was thinking about getting a Mazda.

I have a 2010 outback with 203K on it and no head gaskets at all. The torque converter needed replaced at 120K and Subaru paid for that even though I was the third owner . I know they are known for head gaskets and a few other issues. I changed the oil regularly with mobile 1 from when I got it in 2015 with 108K on it. My daughter has totaled an Audi with it and a few other incidents and she has never got a scratch. They had issues in 2013 -2015 because they extended the oil change interval to 7500 miles. that did not work well because people fit not realize they must check the oil between changes. I like Scotty but a Sub will go for as long as you are will ing to repair it. I am driving a 14' now with 142K on it and it gets 30mpg on the road. Not bad for a full on AWD car.
