your the reason why i started Astrophotography, especially seeing vids like this. makes it seem so easy yet its a journey every night. i managed to get a decent shot of Jupiter a few weeks ago using the a basic scope and my phone.

0:45 _"...something changes in you after you see it"_ Absolutely true, for me. I remember vividly, the first time I saw Jupiter and the Galileans through my friend's very modest 60mm refractor back in Summer 1983. It was about 3am here in Scotland, and at that time of year it never really gets dark. It was almost daylight, but I can still remember that "wow!" moment even now. The feeling of "I'm looking at another planet!" was just awesome.

You are right about the extra aperture. I was lucky enough to see Jupiter through the 42" Hall Telescope at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, AZ, since their other telescope they typically use was being maintained. It's not meant for public viewing, but they set it up for it. Man, was that the most clear view of Jupiter I have ever seen! It really showed what a large aperture can do.

I'm a super novice and always struggle to get my equipment working (backspacing with Celestron NexImage 10 and Celestron 130 SLT does not play nice most of the time) so I haven't really had a change to do that level of processing, but yours is definitely one of the best of Jupiter I've ever seen from an amateur!

Looking good, Trevor! Planetary is tough. It’s aaaaaall about the seeing. You have to either do it all the time and eventually you’ll get an excellent seeing night, or you just get lucky when you haul out the long scope for one night of planetary. It’s fun and rather easy, which is the whole point.

I love take pictures of the planets. It’s my favorite astrophoto. I bought an 9.5inch telescopio weeks ago for this, and only need to wait some days to use it at Jupiter opposition. Before of this, I was using a mak102mm getting very good results.

Because I fell in love with your landscape and such a nice looking observation skies at night whenever I am able to see Milky Way. It’s telling me it is dark there!!!!!

Incredible image of Jupiter - one of the best I have seen. I hope maybe sometime you can get as good of an image of Saturn. I love looking at both Jupiter and Saturn in my Celestron 6se.

Looking at Jupiter in my back yard right now with a small Celestron Mak on a light weight sky watcher AZ-GTi mount. Nothing as cool as what you are using, but I can see it perfect with a 12mm eye piece. Thanks for the work and images Trevor...

Very nicely done! I would agree 100% with using the Dobsonian because aperture is king for planetary photography. I have learnt a huge amount over the past two years, and I'm getting much better results with less effort than in the past. I would also love to give you a summary of the tips I've learnt, but if not anywhere else, then I've listed a few things below. 1. Get your focal ratio to between 5x and 7x your pixel size. For the ASI462, use 4x Barlow (for the Dob). You will have to experiment to see how to achieve this because Barlows are made for visual use and the sensor is further from the visual plane of the Barlow. Televue do make a Barlow for photographic purposes. 2. Don't take my word for it, but you can take 15 minutes of video. Use SharpCap's image tracking and use a small ROI and then just move the Dob from time to time as Jupiter nears the edge of the sensor. I take 3-5 minutes. 3. Slice your video into 30s videos (and timestamp the file name). I preprocess with PIPP to crop and center and also to break the video up into smaller videos. 4. Process each sub-video separately. I use a little bit of wavelet sharpening per image, and I apply the same wavelet filters to each one, but I'm not sure if it's best to do this at this point (I still need to compare results). 5. Stitch the images together in WinJUPOS, then wavelet sharpen the final image, and then do you PP. Using WinJUPOS for derotation makes an enormous difference.

I think that was nice image of Jupiter. Also, definitely use the 14" next time. You can also use an extension tube with your barlow to increase the magnification. I'm not exactly sure how it scales, but I think that roughly 1" of extension leads to an extra 1x in magnification. Also, do the right thing and use a Televue barlow 🙂

We had a telescope collecting dust in our garage and, on a whim, I decided to get it out and point it at the moon last night. I noticed a star under the moon and decided to point the telescope at it. To my surprise it was jupiter and its moon. Crystal clear. I could even see the banding. I had never really done that before. Think I'm gonna keep doing it.

One reason I love having moved to Southern New Mexico because there are a lot of good seeing nights especially for planets. If it rains and gets the dust out sometimes our transparency is like being on a 10,000 foot mountain (we have one). I set my son up with his 127mm Celestron Maksutov on Saturn and my 150 Canon on video on his Nexstar SLT. I showed him how to use AutoStakkert and he even did Uranus the other night using my 150mm Newtonian with a refigured mirror on my AZPro. I guess he got the bug. Uranus even with a near perfect mirror was still a small light blue ball, can't beat physics. I'm seriously considering a 9.25" OTA for my mount just for planets and double stars.

Can you try lucky imaging with the 14" SW? That'd be a cool video! Keep it up, I really enjoy your content.

Thank you. I've a C8 with ASI ZWO 290MC. I work on the Mac, where Autostakkert does not work so well. Therefore I use the Planetary Imaging Tool from ASI ZWO. That also works quite well. Finally, as a secret weapon Topaz, that brings out some more detail with AI.

Trevor, did you try with an atmospheric dispersion corrector? This gets rid of the colour shift when using a colour camera. Really want to see the dob version of Jupiter! Love the video.

Under the "More" tab you can increase your red and blue channels to even out with the green then lower your histogram to increase your frame count

I just got Jupiter the other night from my Celestron NextStar Evolution 9.25. I’m over here in Buffalo, NY so conditions were pretty much the same but it’s the best shot I ever got of it. any tips or tricks for a better shot?

Nice video Trevor, you don't use an ADC , do you? It usually improves the image when the planet is low in the sky. Firecapture provides a feature to set it properly.

I now have a Barlow for my C8 and a planetary camera. Ready to start a new learning curve! Do you do your polar alignment with the Barlow when using the ASIAiir? Hi Trevor. Nicely done. I have a question. In your image, how big was Jupiter in terms of pixels? ie if you drew a square around it, how many pixels does it occupy. The camera you used has a size of 1936(w) ×1096(h) pixels. The other day, my 300 mm lens with my Canon R10 gave me Jupiter and 3 moons at about 200x100 pixels out an image that is 6000x4000 pixels so mere specks but still great to see. Jupiter was about 30 pixels square. I wasn't expecting to see anything at such a small focal length and city centre light pollution. I guess using very crude maths, it was 560x560 pixels in size or more, given your telescope with barlow has a focal length of 5600mm.

I'm struggling with the use of a Barlow and what is the targeted focal point you have found. Will you tell us rookies what's in that image train? Looks like visual back, a 2X Barlow and the 462 camera with a T tube? No ADC. Do you remember how many turns you moved the manual focuser? Must have been a lot? TIA
