I Traded My Tesla For a RAV4 Prime

I really traded my 2018 Tesla Model S P100D for a new 2021 Toyota RAV4 Prime. The main reason for trading is due to ongoing years of quality issues with the Teslas.
This 2021 RAV4 Prime is Blueprint (blue) in color and has the XSE with tech (technology) package. It's a great all-around vehicle as it does a lot of things really well. It goes 42 miles / 68 km in all-electric mode before switching to efficient gas hybrid mode. The RAV4 Prime or R4P as it's sometimes shortened to, is a PHEV, plugin hybrid vehicle. It has a total range of just under 600 miles, or 979 km.
If you have any specific video topics you'd like to see on my new R4P, drop me a comment below. I am done with Tesla for now because I don't trust the company and they really lack in quality control and durability.

I agree. I'm sure I will go back to BEV when the DC charging situation improves around here. I had to take a 5.5 hour road trip last week with zero notice, that would have been a lot more difficult with a BEV. The DC infrastructure here is still very much lacking outside major highways.

I've watched most of your videos and found you to be an honest and patient man. Pesonally, as much as I love what Tesla is doing, I will not buy the company's cars until it resovles its quality issues. In fact, my interest is more towards Lucid and Rivian. Lucid will be a more luxurious, premium car I'm pretty sure, it looks really nice. I know a Tesla owner who will be going the Rivian route next. Multiple times the "charging port lid open" message has been displyed in the dash when the thing did'nt lock properly. Otherwise, no issues. Approx. 8000km driven & 105 litres of fuel used. Oh, todays ethanol rich fuel goes bad kinda quickly - and this car may have the same fuel stored in the tank for a long time if daily usage on eletric only. The car then might tell You to fill up (to mix fuel), so always keep room for that. (only top-up if You are planning a long trip).

Excellent decision. As car manufacturers who have decades of experience and are committed to delivering high build quality begin providing electric vehicles, this technology may eventually make sense. In the meantime, the RAV4 Prime is a much better choice, and still much better for the environment than an ICE vehicle. I bought a Honda Civic Sport last year. Gets over 40mpg on the highway. Cost/mile for tire consumption on a Tesla would alone pay for my fuel cost/mile for the Civic. Granted, it doesn't go 0-60 in under 4 seconds, but it has had absolutely zero defects, and I'm very picky about my cars. Tesla has applied technology inappropriately, to the point of being gimmicky and prone to failure. I don't need to use a touch screen to open my glove box.
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 3 жыл бұрын
You can never go wrong with a Civic, that's a great car. I think the turning point for normal non-EV people will be in about 5 years time. We should have solid state battery electric cars with even less compromises than today. Very fast charging, not as susceptible to cold temps, etc. BEV aren't for everyone, especially right now.
@robevans5222
@robevans5222 3 жыл бұрын
@@InternetDude Would agree. Companies with long histories of building excellent vehicles are beginning to enter this market in earnest, and competition, experience and maturing technology will make BEVs a much better choice for the masses in a few more years. That part where you mentioned that having the EV and gas powertrains can be seen as both the best of both worlds is absolutely true. The RAV4 Prime's transmission is more robust than a conventional automatic because it is not shifting gears at any point, it is simply varying the speed at which the electric motor-generators spin in conjunction with the gas engine. There are far less moving parts in the transmission, it's just a planetary gear set hooked up to 2 electric motor-generators and the gas engine. The complex part is the software necessary to coordinate everything. The gas engine is also under stressed because the EV mode takes over for certain parts of the drive. For example, EV mode kicks in and gets the car moving from a dead stop. The gas engine will turn on after the car is up to speed, which means that the gas engine is usually used to maintain a cruising speed while the motor-generator(s) harvest energy and recharge the battery. In other words, the hybrid vehicle driving mode will optimize usage of the gas engine so that it kicks in when it is most efficient (ie. the least stressed), such as when you're cruising on the street or driving on the highway.
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 2 жыл бұрын
You are correct, the transmission isn't really one, it's more of an drive unit like a Tesla or other EV. And yes the gas engine is under-stressed, especially compared to most new crossovers that have small turbo engines that are stressed out all the time. The RAV4 Prime will outlast all competitors products with lower lifetime operating costs. If there is sufficient charge in the battery, it operates in full EV mode until it runs out of charge, and then reverts to standard hybrid operation. The Toyota hybrid system is very much proven and in my opinion the best on the market in terms of efficiency and longevity.

When it turns on, sometimes it makes a horrible noise. Im waiting on Toyota to get back to me with an answer. Plus, my remote auto climate control, will not turn on after -17C(0F). I talked to toyota and waiting on a response.
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 3 жыл бұрын
Mine makes that same noise, it's normal, they all do that. It only does it for about 10 seconds or less and typically only if it's below freezing. The remote climate control will not turn on if it's below -10 C because it would have to turn on the gas engine which they refuse to let the vehicle do. Toyota won't change for us that but customers need to share that feedback with them so maybe in the future they will change that for future models.

The RAV4 Prime seems to have some type of program to determine how much range you have based on your driving style. When I drive on the freeway or drive stepping on the brakes and gas all the time, I get 41 mile range on a full charge. When I drive 25 mph and gently stop and accelerate (not super slow to be annoying), I get 45 mile range.

I want to know if the main battery is upgradeable at some future point if Toyota ever comes up with a better, newer tech battery so that the old one (say 15 years from now) becomes obsolete? Liked n subscribed just now :)
@InternetDude
@InternetDude 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I've owned two Teslas now and I can tell you that these high tech vehicles become obsolete fast. If we look at older Teslas for comparison, it's not easy to upgrade batteries many years down the road, it's usually stock style replacements only. The components controlling the battery pack would not be upgradable in 15 years and the current tech then would blow this out of the water anyway. All EV's (Tesla, Nissan, etc.) will go obsolete a lot faster than gas counterparts. Right now you could take a gas car that's been sitting for 20 years and get it revived relatively easily. The same would not be possible with an EV, mainly due to batteries. It will also cost way too much to put a $20,000+ battery pack into such an old car.

I got super tired of the endless repairs needed on my Teslas. Compound that with not the best charging coverage where I live and I’m OK buying gas for another year or two. Avoid Tesla 100%. A plug-in hybrid is the absolute best choice right now in my opinion. EV around town and no charging needed for road trips. Cuts down on gas usage when you have 68 km of EV range every day to start!

Hi, I traded in the Tesla at the Toyota dealer. To be honest they didn't want it so they just sent it to a wholesaler, it never went on their lot. I took a loss compared to selling privately but I just wanted to be rid of the problem, garbage car. I was so done with dealing with service etc that I didn't care, I just wanted out. I highly recommend you cancel your CyberJoke reservation, it's more vaporware (Elon is very good at pumping imaginary products for years). Spend your money with a better company. If it was me, Lexus would be on the shopping list, they have a RAV4 Prime competitor but fancier with a 14" touchscreen, etc. See my other video titled "5 years of endless Tesla problems" too as I also had another garbage Model S.

I think the hybrid is a stopgap technology that allows manufacturers to extend their life cycles until they’re fully competitive to produce an EV. The hybrid simply takes all the complicated and tight packing of the mechanical ice and then tries to shoehorn in batteries wherever they can find room.
