With the Gold to Silver ratio at 91:1, the trade favors silver. Are you thinking of trading gold for silver? If you are, there are a few things to consider. I'll tell you how it's gone for me over the years.

I've become skeptical of silver. The high premium is the main reason. In previous years with a silver drop like we've had I would buy silver. Instead today I'm still looking to sell it, as I've been selling it gradually over the year. Hell I can still get close to $30 per eagle.. My brain says that won't last when I was able to pick up the 1000 of them I initially bought for about $2 over spot. IMO the premium will come out of silver (just a matter of time) and there's going to be a lot of discouraged stackers because of it. For now I'm sticking to accumulating gold, and even that I'm skeptical of premiums, as in previous years you could buy gold AT SPOT, or a miniscule premium. I think I was buying AGEs for like $10 over, and spot when it was a "special price." It's a life-long game, and I've got time.

Interesting topic. I've thought about the feasibility of trading the ratio recently and I've come to the conclusion that I'll just continue to stack fractional gold for the foreseeable future. On that note, I just bought my fourth quarter ounce gold eagle last week so I officially have an ounce of gold! That means I'm on track to stack 6 ozs this year. And since Virginia has abolished the sales tax on all bullion purchases effective July 1st, I can save quite a bit on premiums through getting fractional Brits and Phils from SD. Thanks again for the great insight and content and as always, forever endeavor my friend.

I just buy the ratio in the dips. I hold all I purchase knowing it’s my physical savings. If the price soars on silver I may drop some weight but it would have to a solid real estate acquisition for me to move the Gold. PMs are kinda the same/similar asset class. The ratio is the ratio and generally, completely moot. But, trading non-similar asset classes when arbitrage opportunities come up can be very fruitful. Example: Dec 2011 home purchased for 88 troy oz of gold.. Sell the home now, (was a rental property) and buy 204 troy oz. Turn 88 ounces to 200+ ounces doing nothing but collecting rent ;-)

I looked into trading gold for silver a few weeks ago when G:S was 90:1. Due to the price of silver premiums, the best deal I found was effectively 80:1. Now you'd need to consider that you'd likely want to trade back to gold for the game to work. Factoring in loss of silver premiums, it came back at 70:1 to trade gold for silver and then immediately trade that silver back for gold. So the ratio would need to be lower than 70:1 for break even. Also consider that as silver goes up in value, premiums would likely fall, so instead of getting spot for your silver, you might be at spot -$1.00 to sell.

ground silver to gold is stated to be 15 to 17.5 : 1 Ratio in antiquity was 12 to 15: 1 126:1 was the recent highest lowest in 2011, SGR went to 23:1 over many many decades the average SGR range is 40-60:1 91:1 is spot swap now which is out of wack. I traded physical 2 oz bars of gold for 5kg of silver ( about 81:1 on a physical swap). I also buy SPLV . This way I have some physical, however, I also have a large amount of allocated silver stored at the RCM for a low MER, and will convert when the premiums get tighter. It is inevitable some day the ratios will swing low and premiums will be low- its a long game. So, why not be patient? if the ratio goes to 23:1 again, I'd likely get 30:1 from a dealer in a swap. That means my 5kg of silver (costing me 2 oz of gold bars) will = 5 oz (plus) in gold bars i.e. 3 plus oz of free gold. I know an old fellow who played the swaps by being patient over decades. Without adding any further money and being patient, he increased his gold holdings 40x by swapping. He has specific exits to swap gold for silver and visa versa. Why would I wait decades to patiently take advantage? Why would I do this when I could do other things/investments? ...... A~ I do both. The old guy I spoke of has done both! The swaps are a side note for his money where patience and a simple and strict swap plan has made him a winner with these swaps over time. His end game is to get free gold.....he has! Regardless he always keeps a little silver.

Great perspective! That premium spread takes the luster away from these gold to silver ratio deals. I like silver but those premiums make it less profitable. It doesn’t make sense! The only thing is the price point makes it easier to buy ounces of silver vs even a fraction of gold. For awhile I thought the trading notion was interesting until I did the math a few times. Nope! I’ll just directly get what I want; investing, gold or a little silver. And usually I’ll take gold regarding precious metals. Best wishes to all!

FINALLY.....someone who understands and talks about the REAL gold to silver ratio (not the spot price ratio). The real world ratio of gold to silver in comparison of like for like, meaning how many silver eagle to get a gold eagle, how many silver maple leafs to get a gold maple leaf or even how many generic silver rounds to a generic gold round. To me, this is the ACTUAL gold to silver ratio. Thanks for showing this 2 is 1.

When I first got into sliver, I had read an article somewhere explaining that with American eagle bullion coins ,there is a fixed trade number of silver to gold. Like x amount of silver eagles always equal a one gold eagle. But I haven't found it again. Does that sound familiar to anyone else? It was like 40 to 1 No matter the market . Being as I cannot find it again after years of trying , idk if It was real information or not.

Swapping out physical is a PITA with shipping insurance, etc. Not to mention, the paper doesn't reflect reality and premiums are still out of sight. For me, it's easier to just buy more Ag today. Not to mention, I will never swap out my core Au position. I suppose it might be easier if I had all of my PM stored with a bullion dealer in an IRA account who could execute the swap, but if you don't hold it, you don't own it.

I may have mentioned it before so please for give me if so. I started stacking early 2020 when premiums were still more reasonable. I can remember buying 2019 and 2020 eagles for 23.50 when the gsr hit 63, I wanted to do a trade because gold seemed so out of reach for me. Looking back on it. I realize how happy they must have been to see me coming in with a monster box to trade for gold. Recently, I have been watching the charts for when the ratio hits about 98-100. I did call them just to see if they would be as happy when I come in with a few gold pieces wanting a monster box back. It was an interesting conversation… the numbers have to work and I got lucky at 63. They would not budge off of that number at all. I wouldn’t consider trading back unless it was north of 98.. we almost hit it 2 weeks ago..

I wouldn't trade the Gold-to-Silver Ratio at all, mainly due to silver's high premiums. However, one could dollar-cost average between the two metals. If a set amount is spent to buy metals each month/quarter, then start with a base allocation % for each metal-type. When the GSR changes, simply buy a greater % of that purchase in the cheaper (according to long-term GSR) metal. The only catch here is whether the buyer wants to hold (more) silver or not due to space/weight issues.

The point is to buy silver when the price/ ratio is extreme. 100 to 1 or greater. Then sell when the ratio is in the 50 or 60 to one. Use fiat dollars for each purchase. Makes life easier not that making a ratio trade is easy. Time is always a factor and this type of transaction takes time for markets to get right. Recently we were at almost 125 silver to 1 gold. That was a buy!

I dont think trading the gold to silver ratio in physical metals is a worth while endeavor. I just overall don’t like silver, the main reason is that it is incredibly inefficient in storing value in a compact space. Recently I’ve been watching full stack videos showcasing thousands of ounces of silver. They were definitely interesting to watch, but to me they prove silver is just incredibly inefficient. Not only does silver take up huge amounts of space, it also forces you to pay higher premiums across every purchase. Gold on the other hand has low premiums already starting at the 1 ounce size. Just some food for thoughts. Great video as always, thanks!

So I decide to trade couple of my 1 ounce gold bars for more Sylvera considering that Sylvera was more for 1 ounce of gold and I got 68 ounces of silver instead of 80 ounces and on top of that they were willing to pay I believe 85% to 95% towards spot for gold When gold was around 1675.Yeah it’s a little more harder bargain to do if you’re going to try to come out on top. But I know they were selling silver $3.50 above spot price. I actually had to do lotta shopping around where I live so it’s not that easy but who knows it may just come down to what it is you’re wanting to trade and how you wanted to trade it. I have American eagles that I know or at least a lot of money in comparison to generics so I might try something with that. Other than that I’ve taken your advice and it comes to sending money aside to buy ounces of gold with a budget as well as silver comparison to other KZfaqrs so either way I appreciate your advice and what did you guys talk about your my best to enact and other advice I try to dare myself to see How it goes. There is one other thing to consider and that is the continuous uptrend of the average gold-silver-ratio. Gold is a monetary metal and silver is half commodity and half monetary metal. This means that the gold price in the long run tends to increase in line with monetary inflation (the rate of increase of M2 money supply). The silver price about half of the time trends in line with CPI and half of the time trends in line with monetary inflation. As the rate of increase of the CPI is lower than the rate of increase of M2 money supply, the silver price in total has a lower rate of increase than that of gold. This, in turn, means the average gold-silver-ratio increases over time. According to my calculations the average gold-silver-ratio increases at a rate of about 1.5% each year. Doesn't sound like much, but it means that over the course of about 46-47 years the average gold-silver-ratio doubles.

The physical ratio between gold and silver is ALWAYS lower than the paper ratio because the premiums are always higher in silver. Anyone sitting on gold thinking they will get the actual paper ratio in a trade is living in fantasy land. I've done dozens of trades and my favorite way of finding the actual ratio for the trade is by using the retail price on JM or Apmex as the basis for all items in the trade. (Or use the buy back price if it is published for all items in the trade). The problem is when someone wants to trade some high premium foo foo item to me since I'm a stacker and could care less about collectibles and only even buy US Mint items if i can get them at a discount.

I traded my silver for gold when the ratio was down around 66 to 1 about a year and a half ago. With the premiums mainly on silver and the dealer needed to make a profit its usually not worth it unless the ratio is really wacked. If it breaks over 100 to 1, I think it may be worth it then. I would hold your gold for now too. You can buy kilo or 100 oz silver bars for around 2.25 over spot where gold you can buy for around 55 over spot. Silver is a 200 dollar premium to golds 55 dollars. You factor in dealers buy back and premiums your looking at a 300 dollar swing to move gold to silver. I would not trade your gold to silver unless its north of 100 to 1. That is just my opinion.
