Today I tried out a reverse coloring book! I've never seen anything like this before but I was shocked at how fun it was! You basically draw the lines yourself, it's very creative and a unique spin on traditional coloring books and pages. This reverse coloring book totally sold out last I checked but it is still available to buy for a later ship date! This is one of amazons best selling books ever (in the top 600 books right now) and is so unique.

I found out that lefty coloring books have the print on the left side page instead of the right. As a fellow lefty, I might try that out! I like adult coloring books (I tend to use watercolor brush markers and put a blotting page behind the work just in case), and I find myself turning them upside down with the 'righty' books.

There are artists who are afraid to outline (ink) their art and there are artists who are afraid to color their art. I'm both lol so this is pretty awesome. You could have this book and a regular coloring book to practice getting comfortable with lining and comfortable with use of color. Very cool product and I LOVE seeing you use different things and get out of your comfort zone! I also LOVE when you're in your comfort zone because you make really amazing pieces of art. 😁

For the goldfish page I instantly saw 2 different scenes simultaneously, one of them was basically what you ended up drawing. The other scene was a cluster of volcanoes erupting where the blue was the sky, red/orange/yellow was lava, brown was the volcano/mountain, green was a jungle in the foreground, and pink was either fires or buildings (hadn't figured out pink entirely yet after only seeing it for like 3 seconds).

i love this concept! i was super artsy as a kid, but sadly much of my creativity was sort of trained out of me in school. but i had undiagnosed adhd until last year, so even though i couldn't decide what colors looked most "realistic" on a coloring page anymore, i always continued to doodle on the images on class worksheets (think funny hats and beards on historical figures) or make the titles more visually exciting in the church bulletin when i was bored during the sermon. and i did all of that with just a pen or pencil! this sounds like the perfect thing for me, i think i will love it (if i manage to get one lol)!

Love that this concept can be adapted to anything! It's almost an expansion of the art prompt of drawing blobs and creating characters out of them, but in this case starting from a more colorful composition. There was clearly an intent with some of the pieces, and not with others, really lending to the creativity of the line artist. Very cool. :)

I've actually done something really similar to this. You gather up a few objects.. more for their shape than what they are. You color out areas of the items with colored pencils, markers, don't think it would work as well with water based paints/markers. Then you get some gesso and water it down so it's just an opaque wash, you can tint it a bit with acrylic ink, to maybe antique it, etc. Brush the gesso over the colors you drew out. Once it's dry and you get this cool muted, hazy colors. Then you take a fine liner pen and just start filling in shapes and designs, sticking with the lines of the original items or just going random

I saw this book on Amazon quite some time ago, and even put it on my wish list. But I realized that it probably would just overwhelm me since I tend to get very anxious about drawing anything (I used to do draw quite well once upon a time). However, I knew that I would be be very anxious about what I should draw, and worrying if I can even draw what I imagine is on the page (I saw chicks instead of fish--LOL). That is one of the reasons conventional coloring books appeal to me. I'm all about color! Even when I did my own drawings and painting, I tended to just start by putting down different colors or tones onto a barely sketched (or scribbled outline) unless I had to do it a specific way for art class or something. People are different in how they best express themselves and what types of craft or art activity appeal to them, as well as what just makes them anxious. Even with coloring books, there are many different ones out there. They vary in the type of images are in the books, and even in the quality of paper the book is printed on (I have a few that actually are printed on watercolor stock). Some pictures are highly detailed with all sorts of designs within the main images ( I can't--I'll just color right over them). There are very simple drawing that look like they might be better suited for young children, but the simpler the image, the more the "colorist" can add to it. Some very talented artists who also like to color will actually add a lot of details that go beyond just coloring something in. I've seen people do an entire background, add characters, etc. Some adult coloring books, such as some by Johanna Basford, actually will encourage people to draw things in. Other colorists are content to fill in the blanks with whatever colors or media that appeals to them. I started to color to relax, and then as my health declined, this activity was often a welcome distraction to any pain. I do agree that for many, many people, conventional coloring books are not for them, and are unfortunate sources of anxiety and downright fear. So many people had unfortunate childhoods where well-meaning adults (?) screamed at them for "going out of the lines" or using the "wrong color"!! So I can understand the appeal of being able to do your own darn lines! If people could forget these spoilers of fun, then they might be able to relax and understand that it's actually "okay" to use "wrong colors" or even go DELIBERATELY out of the lines. The Coloring Police will not show up at your door to drag you away!😄 Recently, I've been trying to do more "start from scratch" artwork with varying success, so I might give that Reverse Coloring Book a try. I also would like to try your suggestion of of attempting to put down a bunch of color on the page and then draw over it. I would love to see a video on that idea for some tips! Sorry for such a long post! I hope I don't come off as being too defensive but I'm sitting in a room. I don't know about this. I love the pages as they come, and think it's cool that you can see coral and fishes in what is really just blobs of color. Having to put line work in might cause my heart to explode. I'm one of those people who struggles with art because I'm a perfectionist and I always try to be too literal. I think you did a great job. This stresses me out so much😂😂 I’m a watercolour artist and I try stuff like this and I’m so bad at it. I’ve been wanting to do something like this with watercolours and then make the outlines out of embroidery since that’s another hobby but I’m such an over thinker about things like this. I’m the reverse (haha) and think this limits freedom (for me personally) but I’m the kind of person who watches people turn ink splatters into phenomenal art and think it’s witchcraft. It’s totally not that I think it’s a bad idea, I just know it’s not for me personally. I think this is a super fun concept and I’m glad it speaks to people and gets their creativity flowing!😊😊

Fast forward nearly 50 years and I had a very vague but determined 2023 resolution-explore and use your creativity. I have started with watercolors and am trying to just enjoy the process, not to be judgy. This looks like a really different approach- I would really like to see you do more in this Reverse coloring book. Thank you for sharing!

I love drawing but always have blocks in what to draw and I HATE colouring. So this is probably the best invention for art that I have seen to match me. Love it. Can't wait till mine comes.

Uuhh this kinda calls for a collab with sarahrenaeclark! I think she said she wanted to try out different mediums, so she could paint some watercolor shapes and templates and you can line them out, and vice versa you can draw random line stuff she can color in. I would love to watch that

Oh my goodness! This was so cool!! I feel that this is a good training for me to do loose watercolors, and if I don't care for the ending results, hey! I can doodle and turn it into whatever I can see "in the clouds" type of effect. Thanks so much! This was fun.

I added this to my Amazon cart for Christmas!!!! 😂 what a fun creative idea. It really reminds me how when I took viola classes my teacher would make me play the music backwards to really focus on the notes, then when I played the music the normal way, I had tricked my brain and played better. Anyway…I just love your videos. Your personality is so fun and makes smile. 😊

This is such a great idea! Loved the outlines you created! 😍 Now I am going to try making similar pages for myself, by splattering some watercolour on paper. Let's see how it goes haha

At 12:35, I also see fishes and corals at the bottom of the ocean. Also, great video! Unfortunately, I think some parts of the audio are missing at some point, but it doesn’t matter, your drawings are beautiful! I would love to see more of it! Also I don’t know if I am the only one, but at 1:41 I see something pretty specific😅

This is just like I do with my watercolor doodles. I get watercolor paper and lay down color in general floral shapes then I use my pens to create the outlines later. My goal was to get familiar with watercolor while improving my line work and drawing skills. One of my favorite therapeutic activities.

When it comes to how I do my line art I find that it’s very hard for me as a beginner to control pens with flexible or brush nibs so I just use various tip thicknesses and then I’ll also go back and thicken up some lines or just make it look sketchy and intentional

This sounds interesting. It's like doodling on a watercolor background, only the colors are provided for you. This would be good for practicing doodles. Edit I'm in Canada. I wonder if these coloring books are available here.
