In today's video I'm eschewing my Kryolan TV Paint Stick for an 18th Century White Foundation Recipe instead, developed by LBCC Historical Apothecary. Yeah I know...thought the day would never come! Here's an in depth review of how it stacks up to the Kryolan TV Paint Stick in 070, and if it's a white foundation I would personally recommend.
You can check out LBCC Historical Apothecary's white face paint here:

Oh wow! I've been longing to see someone demonstrate an authentic period recipe! This is wonderful, thank you! It also looks wonderful on skin! I so often see this myth that everyone in Europe used lead-based ceruse, and there were no alternatives, and it looked ghastly. But people totally did know about alternatives-- there was plenty of trade with East Asia around this time, and we know lots of people used a rice flour based paint similar to a geiko's traditional oshiroi! And I've always doubted this stereotype that it looked horrible. If it really looked like that but all the wealthiest people still used it, you'd have thought either that look would become fashionable and so be reflected in portraiture, or nobody would use it. But, though portraiture undoubtedly had an element of flattery, wealthy people's makeup and wigs look beautiful in paintings. This absolutely confirms my belief that it could and did look lovely when properly applied to well cared-for skin. :)

I think I may invest in a historical powder next to see if how it works with this base. Perhaps it could create an even better finish! But I think perhaps it may not have flattered their skin given their own personal skincare at the time 🤭

@@Minsooky I reckon it might do! Rice flour mixed with ground lavender is one period accurate recipe-- try looking for 'poudre de riz'! Their skincare was quite good, though! Books like the 1779 Toilette au Flora, which is known for its cosmetics recipes, actually focus much more on skincare than makeup. Cold creams made from tallow and herbs were widely in use as cleansers and moisturisers, and used to take makeup off. Toners as we'd understand them today could be made from botanical extracts like rosewater, and early chemical exfoliants for smoother skin were made of acidic fruit like lemons. :)

I do like how it isn't that opaque, I keep a variety of white face makeup from blinding white to a softer white. The end result is what I'm looking for with some looks I want to do. I'm willing to give that product a try

I’m always fascinated by historical makeup, plus I love your videos, so this was really extra interesting to me! I also really respect how you’re always trying to be as environmentally friendly as possible. It’s definitely hard to do in the world we live in, but I really admire you for continuing to try! Not everything will be a perfect fit, but you keep trying and you care and that’s the important part. Thank you for showing us what this historical makeup really looked like, that’s just so cool to me! I hope you find the perfect white foundation in the perfect container 🤍😊🤍

I'm going to try a tin. I stopped doing white face makeup for a long time but maybe I should start again.

I wish I could try this out!! Sadly my face is really fuzzy (I'm Italian and like the fuzz!) so I can't wear foundation without it looking really badly textured, but I'm excited to try out this brands other products when I run out of my current stuff! I was looking for a Besame alternative so thank you so much for sharing!

Any reason to avoid Besame just out of curiosity? I’ve heard them mentioned before in vintage fashion circles but I’m not very familiar with any news

@@Minsooky I just grew suspicious of their complete lack of showing either men or gnc folks on their insta page and ads, and that on their website they say "makeup for women" and call their customers "besame girls". combined with vintage makeup, it just seemed...a little too off to me, as a trans & queer person. I loved their products but after using them for 3 years and being uncomfortable both in their brick and mortar store in CA and their branding, I decided to stop supporting them

Just bought my first TV Paint Stick because of your water-activated vs cream-based video but I am glad there are better sustainable when I run out. I hope they can make a new version with a synthetic alternative to beeswax. Did you try patting the eyeshadow instead of sweeping motions? That seems to work on stubborn bases. Greetings from Mexico love!

I'd like to try makeup that is somewhat like shironuri or maiko makeup, but adjusted to look more casual or normie. Is there even such a thing? It's just so elegant.

Same! I’ve been watching Min for a long time and I’ve always wondered if Shinori makeup is like idk the term “culturally exclusive” or something. Like I would love to know if it’s ok for a white person like me to do it 🥺

@@gremlinwithstickyhands3704 well I’m not even Japanese, though my grandmother was born there. White foundation has been worn by a plethora of ethnicities so keep that in mind. However be careful when it comes to replicating cultural looks like geisha or kabuki. I just stick to looks from my own culture (like my gumiho look) 🙂

My reply to you keeps disappearing, so on why I no longer support Besame: I just grew suspicious of their complete lack of showing either men or gnc folks on their insta page and ads, and that on their website they say "makeup for women" and call their customers "besame girls". combined with vintage makeup, it just seemed...a little too off to me, as a trans & queer person. I loved their products but after using their products for 3 years and being uncomfortable both in their singular brick and mortar store in CA and their branding, I decided to stop supporting them.
