Tony Jeffries an Olympic bronze medalist boxer tries Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Training for 30 days experiencing takedowns, submissions and had a sparring fight at the end. In this martial arts you have to be closed most of the time to your opponent and I am not used to that because in boxing we maintain distance for defense.

I can only imagine how humbling it must be to be a killer when it comes to boxing, only to be totally dominated when it comes to grappling. @@Tony_Jeffries you should definitely compete, mate. I was so pleased when you mentioned controlling your breathing; I did jiu-jitsu for a bit and even though I was twenty-plus years older than ALL the other students, I quickly found they'd all tire faster than me. Why? Breathing, that's all. I had no skill but I was relaxed, cos my background was tai chi. Relaxed breathing was completely second nature to me -- even in those moments when you have very big, heavy guys on top of you, just trying to crush the air out of you. And you have to compete in LA: someone has to represent the North East!!!

That progress was amazing! I have so much respect for how much you pushed yourself outside of your element. I came into BJJ as a D2 wrestler and still felt next to useless for quite a while as I was learning, that's just how it is. As for which better between boxing and BJJ for self defense: personally if I was absolutely positive there was only one opponent I would use my grappling. If I thought there was even a chance of someone else entering the fight I would absolutely not want to go to the ground.

@@thegazchambers I'm 37 and been training a bit over a year. There are fellas at my gym older than both us who still compete. Some win at high levels, others compete simply because they love it, others stopped after one. My first is in a few days. I'm nervous and, like you, unsure if I'll be able to hack it. But, as a huge plus, my BJJ has already benefitted even before I set foot in the competition. I'm training, drilling, and eating better than ever -- it has me inspired. I understand your hesitance, but I'd say it's worthwhile to sign up to compete, especially if you feel a mixture of fear and desire. As my teammates remind me, other guys there will be scared, too. One long-time wrestler told me he'd puke at every meet. Even black belts get nervous before comps! I'm sure you'd be able to get out there and give 'em hell.

Dude. You did SO well. When I got into JiuJitsu 4 years ago, I got submitted so many times in a single round. Then I too, quickly learned to defend my arms. But I kept losing against higher belts. Then finally I could survive a round without getting submitted. And now I can transition from defending and surviving to hunting for my own submissions. And with all that being said, it just gets more and more advanced. Our gym’s JiuJitsu is like magic it’s so effective. Then Henry Akins came to our school and made our highest tankers look like children. Their concepts and hidden techniques turned us all into prey. It just gets better and better bro. By time you are a black belt, you’ll wipe the floor with 99% of the people out there. And yet you won’t even have scratched the surface of the deepest, most advanced techniques. It’s a never ending ocean of knowledge

This is my new favorite video of yours, Tony. I love both boxing and BJJ! It's great that you challenge yourself to try new things. Maybe a Muay Thai class next? You already know how to punch, now it's time to learn how to kick like Buakaw! Thanks for showing us a different side of you in this video. It keeps the content fresh and interesting. Keep up the great work. My boxing has improved so much because of your videos. Cheers, mate! 🙂🥊

@@Tony_Jeffries Hey, Tony! Great to hear from you! I've been doing BJJ for 6 years. I'm a purple belt, but every time I step on the mats I still feel like a white belt! I think this BJJ quote says it best... 🙂 "If you ask me what belt I am today, I’ll tell you that I’m a white belt that never gave up." - Jean Jacques Machado

I'm so happy for you man. Welcome. I can't wait till you start to use your boxing for BJJ. My takedown defense got so much better due to boxing angles and footwork. The application of your own unique vessel to this sport is so magnified, compared to other combat sports imo. Can't wait to see yours. Please have a whole series of your BJJ progression. I'll be here for it every time.

You're a great competitor and you push yourself to the limits and you challenge yourself... And from my experience in jiu-jitsu, it's not about the challenge of the opponent as It's a challenge of self... Thank you so much for this video... your northern friend from Toronto Canada.. That was very inspiring and interesting to watch. I really enjoyed this video. I am very surprised how much you improved in 30 sessions. I would say definitely stick with it. I too am a boxer and I dont know the 1st thing about jujitsu or any kind of grappling/wrestling, but to me it looked like you made lots of progress in such a short time so I think there is something there worth going for. Ive personally thought about learning jujitsu too or at least try it for awhile. Jujitsu seems like a very complicated sport with lots of years it will take for someone like me to get to the point of being able to compete even at a low level. I think you got that professional champion mindset so you are an exceptional athlete, so I would really like to see more of this in the future from you.

I love this, Tony! I was introduced to boxing in 04’ and BJJ in 08’. I stopped training BJJ after 10’ to focus on my stand up to compete in amateur boxing and Muay Thai. I got back into BJJ right before covid in 18’ to receive my blue belt from my black belt professor, my friend, and we both started together as white belts competing in our first Jiu Jitsu tournament against each other, only for me to come out victorious. 😂. It’s crazy to think how far I would have come if I never stopped for that 8-year gap. But the great thing about BJJ is there isn’t really an age you can stop training, and it truly is a journey. Good luck with your journey, and I look forward to seeing your success! Oss! 🤙🏾

About the subject of self defence Tony, do you know there is a difference between old school BJJ like Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and sports BJJ (where there are no strikes involved.) If you don't know this as a beginner you could use the wrong techniques in the street and get beaten up. One example is where the purple belt keeps the triangle when you're standing. In the streets, you could have slammed him into the concrete. The same applies to various guard techniques from the back where you are exposed to strikes etc. One has to know which techniques are for sport settings and which ones are for the streets.

@@tekopuakanapanapa6824 Yeah. It works both ways. If the BJJ guys are so humble where are the videos of them getting dusted by boxers or kickboxers when they learn that sport? I'm not saying they don't exist nor that most BJJ players are arrogant but I seem to notice a trend where BJJ fans think that everyone else is afraid of their sport and never the other way around.

I knew an MMA coach who said: "It takes 10 years to get good at jiu-jitsu & it takes 10 years to get good at boxing. The difference is nobody ever won a boxing match because he knew a punch the other guy didn't. For your first couple years of jiu-jitsu that tends to happen."
