One good downpour will fill the water butt! The problem with direct connexion like the way you propose is that your water butt will fill up with rubbish washed off the roof. I did precisely what you are doing (I may even have used the exact same water butt) and this is what happened to me! I don't remember precisely how to convert area of roof to the size of tankage required, but I would guess that to use all of your rainwater you will need about 10,000 litres of water tank!

This is why I want a bungalow, so I can do maintenance myself. Great job 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Did my front at the weekend - 2 hours - Vacuumed the inside with my gutter vac, jet-washed inside and out with my karcher k5 and a pro lance ... so much easier and quicker when you have the kit. Hardest part was a 9 inch long grass root which was blocking 1 of the down pipes. Fun fun fun.

I do our gutters (hate heights) as there’s a rain tree to houses over which the wind loves to blow leaves into our roof/gutters. Wish I had your gutter gap (I’d get hubby to do) ours is so tight so my small hands fit. Glad we have dark blue gutters as I’m not going to your efforts 😂😂😂. Would love to see you or Mr.Tcd do a pressure wash on the roof cause neither me nor hubby will ever be up there to do ours. 😊❤

Excellent episode; some drain cleaning companies have high-pressure hoses with nozzles that do similar but are designed to cut tree roots as they pass through. They will also work out where your soak-away is so you can work on it. Leave the roof tiles alone; it's nature's waterproofing, and it stops them from getting damaged. The lichens and mosses are good for wildlife and indicate clean air. Good video, entertaining. With the water-but, you will need an overflow outlet near the top. I have a small house and I installed 2, 1000 litre water-buts, in a storm these filled quickly, but I didn't fit an overflow, the result was a 2 meter fountain coming out the top of a water-but. They both have an overflow now, just a 20mm plastic outlet pipe.

For what it's worth, here's my few pennyworth ... 1. Every autumn, after the trees have finished dropping their leaves, you need to lift out and clean those pipe grids. You'll be amazed at how quickly they get clogged (but they do stop the rubbish going down the pipe). 2. You will likely want to have a water butt on every downpipe. Use a diverter kit so that when the water butt is full the excess goes down the pipe. You will find that your porch water butt will flood after a downpour. 3. It is likely that the downpipe drains go to soakaways which may well be too small and clogged up with all the dirt that has been in the underground pipes. Digging new oversize soakaways and resetting the underground pipework (with the drain grids above garden level) is probably you best long term solution. The soakaways have to be at least 5m away from any building. It's very easy to post a comment that creates a lot of work and expense for you!

Love the videos. An old boy years back told me when using hole cutters on plastic to run it in reverse when you start. It stops that dramatic kick back you get.

With the water-butt, You might want to add an overflow pipe leading away from the house. I have seen damp caused by a water-butt overflowing next to a wall.

Nice job. It is amazing how much a little cleaning can improve the look of a house. PS. Why not stick another water barrel under the downspout that you are not happy with? If you are growing vegetables, you are always going to need water and that would kill two birds with one stone.

Your place is a single story so its easier to maintain gutters over a 2 story house but i have a tip as i had to replace my soakaway and pipework. I have a drain gulley like yours with my downpipe ends not inside but just above the grid and i place a fine piece of mesh (the mesh from an old cooker hood extractor filter) on top. The idea being the mesh collects the junk off the roof instead of going down the soakaway eventually blocking it up again. Plus you don't have to get up on a ladder to clear the moss it comes down to you!

If you’ve only got a septic tank and soak aways check your water bill to make sure you’re not wrongly being charged for water removal as it often gets added on automatically.

For foldable ladders I'd recommend Werner. I got the 15 in 1 version and it is rock solid. It also comes with a set of plates you can use to turn it into a platform. I felt your pain clearing those 'hanging baskets'. When I moved into my current cottage I filled 5 builders buckets from about 50ft of guttering. Heavy duty bin bags make a good alternative to the drain gloves and you can just turn them inside out as you take them off and use them to dispose of the waste. As others have said, there are nozzles that spin and fire forwards that are designed to cut through roots etc. One of those would probably clear the actual pipe but unless you can get to the end of it the debris will just end up clogging your soakaway. All in all I think you did a damn good job there. Time to put your feet up with a nice glass of wine!

Hey Vikkie so gutted I missed you at makers central but you did a great job with that guttering. We have a few water butts and I bought a pump that hangs in them and connects a house to then you can use it like a normal house when they’re full it’s so much quicker than the tap. ❤️❤️

Nice. I would not scrub the tiles in case they have been coated. Could try metal detector over the lawn to find lid to soak away lid if used. Then mark it with an ornament so you don't loose it again like we did. LOL.

Sorry I had to laugh when you tested theb jet washer hose 😂 I have the same decorators tower to the one you borrowed, they are very handy although a little sketchy! I have fallen off mine quite a bit taller tha what you had set up, but it was half width. If you see one for sale for a good price they are well worth picking up but you reall need the boards that lock in they add a lot of rigidity. Guttering looks great, you certainly went to town! I scrubbed my flat roof when I first bought my house, within a year it looked just as bad again 😂I won't be bothering again I don't think haha.

Hi Vicky. Some proper hard graft needed for this type of work, your making it look easy. You may of thought of this, but I'll mention it anyway. We also have a bungalow and our bathroom and another separate toilet are situated close together. We have been forced by Anglia water to have a meter fitted. I have worked out that the placement of one or two water butts, near a drain pipe close to these facilities, could supply water to both toilet cisterns fitted with a switchable tap in case of drought. This could save a few bob on our bobs, and stop us flushing money down the drain.

Hi Vikkie. It was an absolute pleasure chatting with you at Makers Central. Regarding the mould lichen and algae on the roof, may I suggest Wet & Forget Rapid. Attach to the hose & spray onto the roof. You should see a massive difference within a few days. However, a cheaper alternative is to use the Wet & Forget original that is diluted (I do 3-1) & manually spray onto the most affected areas. For both products, please make sure it's not windy & no rain is forecast. Speak soon. G

We had to clear the guttering and remove and clean the downpipe out, just a couple of weeks ago. Ours is a house. I am nearly 70 so I didn't go up the ladder. I was the one at the bottom holding the ladder and getting filthy! You did make me smile ( you always do). Your washing machine had it's work cut out that day! Well done! I know you still have loads of jobs to do but place is looking great. 😊

Great job on the gutters. I don't believe in rising damp (well it does exist in a few cases) which is a term designed to sell expensive "cures" to people who don't know otherwise. Mostly it's leaking/blocked gutters and condensation (i.e. lack of ventilation.) so keeping your gutters flowing and good ventilation is the best way to keep your property dry. Keep up the good work Vikkie!

A good toilet brush works great for gutters.

Great job on cleaning guttering and drains. I noticed the drain grills were level with the ground. You could do with three sided concrete drain gaurd to stop leafs, dirt and rubbish going down and blocking it up again.

Thats a job well done Vickie and the clean gutters completely transforms the face of your home. Moss is the biggest culprit for roof gardens, as it dislodges and gathers to provide a very fertile base for seeds. I wouldn't suggest cleaning your roof with chemicals as this could wreck your soak-away and possibly contaminate your garden. As you have already bought a long extension for your jetwash you could use this with a long pole to clear moss from the roof.

That karchers add on sure came in handy , will have to look into getting one of them , but need a jet wash first 😂

I cleaned my gutters out today as well. Then...... I heard scratching from the bottom of my downpipe (my wife thought I was losing the plot) and a squirell had found its way in from the first floor gutter. Downpipe loosened and Squirell freed and downpipe clear. Glad you changed to the pressure washer (it's so much easier) and didn't find any squirrels.

I have an extensible wand attachment with a hook on the end for my garden hose that jets water down into the gutter. It works really well, but it can get messy if you angle it wrong and spray muck on yourself. You can also get similar extensions for leaf blowers. I also have a plastic block with stiff bristles on all of its sides that screws onto the end of an extendable painter’s pole that’s good for cleaning and clearing gunk buildup from the ground. Edit: Maybe a dryer vent cleaning kit, the sort made out of flexible rod segments that you attach to a drill, might clear that obstructed drain. Mine came with a c-shaped metal end designed to cut through heavy obstructions. It might work on fibrous roots. A long drain auger might work, too. (Tip: wrap each joint with electrical tape each time you add a new rod segment. It’ll prevent unintended unthreading.)

Sodium hypochlorite for the roof tiles. Dilute as per manufacturers instructions, spray onto roof using cheap crop sprayer pump and low pressure jet wash it off the following day.

I don't know why but gutter cleaning was so satisfying to watch. Re that drain still partially blocked, could u try putting chemical there that could help breakdown roots in pipes?

Morning Vickie. Great cleaning job. The water butt on the porch will overflow in winter. You won't be using the water and even a large one will not be sufficient. A diverter is best and overflow i pipe if possible but takes some thought. So much of this type of fix being done for conservatories and small extensions and they have potential for damp and mould. Also as I think you are now aware the surface/roof water should never be in your grey drain. (I can't believe that the water companies aren't yet blaming home owners for the amount of the drain flooding that goes on as many a time the shortcut to the nearest waste water pipe puts rain water in the wrong system) I know its a pain but finding that soak away which may well be backed up and putting a new pipe in to that or digging a new one and redirecting at least some of the pipes would be a sure way of having peace of mind. Unlikely that multiple down pipes have one soakaway. Keep it up the place looks great

You should get some of those drain plastic covers stop more crap and mud going down the drains (where the drain pipes go ) very good as usual 😊

As someone else has mentioned, use a diverter kit on the water butt so that once the water butt is full it diverts the excess water down the pipe and away. With the pipe going straight into your water butt, any crud coming down the pipe will end up in the bottom of your water butt. You can also daisy chain water butts together - I have three 250l butts connected to one downpipe.

Jet washers are God's gift to cleaning outside! Not all are equal and it is not worth buying better until you need to. There are several attachments you can add to them. Obviously you do not need them all but the rotary jet you have will cover most things (it can even take some paint off if you are not careful). You probably could do with a petrol one next time you buy ..... there is a big difference there both in power and volume! One attachment I use is a car foam sprayer (sil got it not me .... honest) put a bit of detergent and fill up with bleach and you have the best method for cleaning discoloured concrete I have found short of sandblasting! Literally one min and you have a foam blanket over everything .... in for a quick brew while the magic happens then back out with the lance to clear it all off! Obviously you are dealing with a reactive liquid so care is needed (pair of wellies for me) and keeping inquisitive dogs away is a must. It works well on brickwork too and you have the added bonus of stopping the roots growing in your pipes. ;o) I have tried that PVC "Cleaner" you have but don't rate it. Soap and water worked as well for me. If you read it that stuff is actually a PVC solvent so be warned! The yellow stuff you were trying to scrub off the tiles is a type of lichen that only grows in clean air (I am told) but if you want rid a bleach wash will do it ..... I think it looks nice though, as though it belongs there rather than being new! I know people who brush a bit of yogurt on patches of buildings to promote its growth and blend repairs in better, but each to their own! You seem to have caught on to the rest of things well enough, but there are more than one rod design. One is a square klick fit (I have only used that on chimneys though. Your rods are a lot thicker and you definitely do not want to unscrew one half way down a pipe! There are also a couple of different end types. Usually you get 3 in with your rods, a screw like you have, a rubber "bung" which should be a lot smaller than the pipe and another which is semicircular and good for scraping the gunge from the bottom of your pipes! Professional drain companies would carry CCTV and even radio location devices ..... handy to know if you need one!

If you get your roof professionally pressure cleaned a good cleaning company can then also do a biocide treatment that will get rid of the lichen and stop it regrowing.

Wow the land is looking a lot better. All tidy and now looks like someone lives there. My brother had the brilliant idea of doing our folks old home before it went up for sale. He paid someone to do it though. Looks a lot better but soon gets that dirty again. 😂

One piece of extra equipment I keep by for cleaning the spouting is a pair of kitchen tongs (with rubber ends). Really handy for grabbing a wad of debris, especially if the roof overhangs the spouting so much that you can't get your whole hand in and out easily.

if you have soak-away drainage, your water bill can be reduced as you're not using the drains. check with your provider

We run a 110mm drain into the kitchen and connected the waste pipes inside, looks a lot better with no external waste pipes. Did the same with the bathroom.

Another great video. Always rod upwards/ upstream from an inspection chamber - and stand well back when you hear weird noises!

In some places you can rent an inspection camera for pipes some models have a probe that you can find with a receiver, with the receiver you also find out the depth. If all the pipes go to the same place, you can dig a tank to get irrigation water, if you want more water than the pond.

The roof would look amazing scraped and power washed. Probably some type of treatment after cleaning would give you several years of clean roof. Gutters look almost new. Elbow grease to the rescue!

Don't pressure wash your tiles because it takes the coating off.

It is possible to rent an inspection camera, some models have a probe that you can find with a receiver and then also get information about depth. If all the pipes go to the same place and you need more irrigation water than you can take from the pond, you can bury a tank in the ground to get irrigation water.

When i do the cleaning of my fascia and guttering i get my car Snow Foam and mix it in spray bottle on my jet wash, i then spray them with it and let is soak in for ten minutes then i get a car wheel brush and scrub it in and then just jet wash it all off, works fast and very effective.

Great work and video. I’ve just done my gutters and used a wet vac and pressure washer this time which made it much quicker and more through than scraping and brushing I normally do. Would recommend the light telescopic ladders over the folding step-ladder type that nearly took my fingers off.

As a DIYer, I love your channel , but I defintely would keep all the pvc round the house the same colour, im not sure about the black and white look.

You can get companies to come out and clean your house roof they have videos on here. I would also look to start water sealing the brickwork they will benefit. Be careful with hooks and drains you can ask the water board to come and help they have cameras that can find things, looking at your trees you might have roots from them in your drains. They will sort out the blockages that they have their ends etc.

Don't jet-wash the tiles. It damages the surface of the tile. You can buy a scraper on a pole for the moss plus a chemical cleaner.

When your waterbutt is full it will overflow. You need to cut a hole near the top to fit a suitable tank connector that you can connect some overflow pipe to and run it to a drain

Try a product call wet and forget on the roof you just spray it on and leave to do its thing.❤

If you get two thick black cable ties and put them in two opposed loops through the drain grid lid then you'll have something to pull up on next time

Be careful cleaning out drains, one of our drains were blocked once and when we tried clearing it out turns out what had been blocking it was a rat!! 🥴😭

Moss and lichen. Don't bother scrubbing it off the tiles. A permanent solution is to install copper strips along the top of the roof. A slightly less permanent way is to spray with bleach(chlorine based cleaning agent). The only thing you should never do is pressure-washing the tiles as it can roughen up the tiles that makes it easier for moss to reestablish. Long gloves are wonderful. I picked up a couple of pairs of long, thick Nitrile gloves on Amazon. One pair is now mounted to the lid of the largest plastic tote I could find(it is now a sandblasting cabinet)

Given the state of the gutters and downspouts, I would be confident in saying the soak away has been filled in with soil and debris over the years. If you do end up having to redo it, have a look at the Rainbox style soakaway system (maybe not that system exactly as it's a bit pricey). Should be strong enough to have a deck and hot tub on top once installed!

Hahaha ..... I was going to ask why you’d not used a pressure washer to clear/clean your gutters! The guy who clears my gutters uses a pressure washer on a long reach pole and has a special nozzle (which probably cost about the same as your gutter scraper). I don’t live in a bungalow so absolutely wouldn’t be attempting it myself 😆 I do wish you’d been wearing just a modicum of eye protection however🙃

*Vicki, First off, how old are the (I assume concrete) roof tiles? Please do NOT waterblast the (concrete) roof tiles (as that is a rookie mistake) as you will remove any paintseal up there that is still protecting the roof tiles. Then decide do you have enough dollars to do a repair and paint the roof. if so... please get three quotes done from proper roofers. Last year I had my concrete roof tiles done by a very good roofing company in NZ. So I know the procedure done here in NZ. But rules maybe different over your way. If you want to do it yourself, then hunt down roof tiles just like what you have up on your roof before you even begin... as concrete tiles are getting hard to find if they were used many a year ago! (I have 20 tiles saved for any future damage. But they ended up replacing about 50 tiles on my 1978 home. If you decide to do it all yourselves, then get in a anti-moss treatment done. Once that is done.... you must replace any broken or tiles chipped in the corners. Then you can wash down the roof tiles... and then you get the roof tiles coated with a sealer paint. Then you put on 2 or 3 coats of top coat of the colour you want the roof to be. once completed then a year later, get the anti-moss chemical treatment done again. I hope this helps as doing it all yourself is NOT an easy job 🙂NZ*
