It's a trans-atlantic accent, which was created in the early years of radio and film to help homogenize the accents of American and British actors. It was definitely a sign of a fancy trained actor/actress, but it quickly fell out of favor and became dated because no one actually spoke in that accent in real life. It's very much a product of the time haha

Late af, but I noticed Rachel looking into the camera and shaking her head smiling at that. Also I'm pretty sure him doing that was just a continuation of saying he'd go to the pub real quick (see if my watch is right by the clock of the green dragon), as a joke. It's just a silly "Tee-hee I'm back from the pub, oops I'm still a little tipsy!" bit.

@@BannanaOnFloor The basic sentiment is that he needed an excuse to go to the pub! In this case, checking if their watch is on time with the clock in the pub (when actually they're grabbing a cheeky pint), while the viewer continues to watch the tutorial. No clue if this is a common saying (as a Brit I've never heard it before) but I imagine the basic formula is very common!
@crustyoldfart
@crustyoldfart 4 жыл бұрын
As another man, and one who lived through those times, albeit as a young boy, I would hazard a guess that the remark about checking one's watch at the pub was nothing more or less than a wisecrack which he felt it was necessary to make to assert the fact that he felt it slightly demeaning to be associated with what was purely a female concern. Chauvinism was absolutely the normal attitude at that point in time. It should also be made clear to present day people that NO that was not a common Brit expression but was a more or less original comment to show how witty he was and at the same time appear self-deprecating which was also an important thing to do if one wanted to be identified as a macho man. Other comments here call into question the man's accent. This was more or less standard BBC English which was actually an artificial construct. One supposes that such a standardization was necessary at a time when there were a host of regional accents and dialects, to the extent that people from widely separated parts of the country could often have great difficulty understanding one another. The BBC construct, with its peculiar vowels was also designed to sound ' posh ' ; and this would make what was being said more authoritative.

I could't resist throwing in my 2 cents worth. I lived in the UK throughout WW2, it started when I was 4 and ended when I was 10, so by 1945 my impressions and memories were mostly informed by what had taken place during the war. I think the hardest thing for people living today, and under the age of say 40 is to appreciate what it is like to live in a world where new clothing is almost unobtainable. So a great deal of ingenuity was needed, which included salvaging old clothes, and using simple pieces in ingenious ways. It's probably the turban that epitomizes this. Worn exclusively by women the constant challenges were to wear something suitable for your work, and at other times to try to look ' different ' in order to attract attention. [ There is a belief among men that women dress to attract men, whereas the truth is that women dress to compete with other women. ] Recall that many women took jobs in Industry, both light and heavy, and for safety and good hygiene the turban was ideal, being cheap, and served the necessary requirement to cover the hair. [ There was always the horrendous possibility of having you hair caught in a lathe with consequences too horrible to contemplate, so covering the hair, unless it was as short as a man's hair of the period, was mandatory for factory workers. ] It's notable that in the piece, and in the old demonstration there is a clear motive to devise turban styles which would stand out when that was what the occasion demanded. As I implied at the start, by 1945 turbans were just about the only headgear for women that I ever remembered seeing.

This was probably shown in theaters as a preview before the main feature. If you are having a little trouble remembering how to do this soon after watching it, I really don't see how this is very practical if you have to sit through a whole movie and then go home and try to recall how she showed you to do this. I bet a lot of women thought it was a neat idea, but never ended up doing these exact knots.

I feel ya with the being late to a trend thing, thank you for doing it anyway. Just because it's not a new concept, doesn't mean it's not valid good quality content to put on your channel. If it's not been done by you yet, it's not done. Also you struggling while the Narrator's going "There's nothing easier in the whole wide world..." deserves to be a Meme... such on point... much me.

Narrator was a little condescending ( to me at least ). This was the 40s Lol. I liked your last one the best. The folds remind me of a scarf barrette I got years ago but it was navy and I still have it . Only wore it once.

Of course he was, this was the time of ads telling women quite literally that they have to buy (insert here), or else they'll STINK and no one will ever marry them. The whole beauty business was - and to this day still is - founded on shaming women into doing/buying something.

I have that very same scarf barrette, but in red! It's been lurking in a basket for decades but I'mma bust it out now and attach it to the front of a scarf turban. Vindication for hoarding shall be sweet!

Lol I loved this! Your random faces and commentary always make me smile. I actually have a video suggestion for you if that’s okay? I’m having a hard time trying to dress vintage and keep warm as the temperatures drop here on the east coast and I was wondering if you’d be willing to make a video about the different ways you keep warm in the winter while also dressing vintage. Thank you!

A CLOTH baby diaper is a very good practice turban. My mother said that they would even color them with different dyes. She wore one for years after the war during outdoor summer activity like picnics. I have many photos of my gorgeous Momma wearing these. Try it, it's a no fail. She could tie one up in seconds and take them down and have the most beautiful waves.
