Would you try rice paper boba?! Let me know below! Btw, if you do end up making it, I found that boiling it in water for around 8-10 minutes actually made it stay softer in the drink! So I'd definitely recommend doing that :)

just made this earlier for the first time and they turned out great! chewy and easy to make. here are a few tips that i think might help: 1. wet your surface before rolling so it won’t stick. in my case, i put plastic wrap on top of my cutting board then sprinkled some water. 2. this is the most important one!! after rolling your rice papers, you can use scissors then cut them over a bowl filled with water. this will ensure that they won’t stick together. but what i did was i cut them first then poured water over them while separating it with my hand. soak them for 10-15 mins, this is so that they won’t harden during the process like what happened here. 3. after you’ve taken the rice paper and melted brown sugar off the stove, pour them into a container then let it sit for maybe 20 minutes? the reason is bc when i made mine, i immediately poured it into the glass then added milk and it left an aftertaste. usually it’s not noticeable when you’re making spring rolls because you’re using savory ingredients. but with this, you can definitely tell the taste of the rice paper when you’re chewing it. so better leave it for some time so that the taste of the brown sugar penetrates the rice paper. if you can, make it the night before. i tried it with almond milk and it tasted great! 🤎 i also adjusted the measurements and instead i just used 1/4 cup of sugar and water along with maybe 3 or 4 rice paper? i didn’t cut the edge into a square as i felt it would be wasteful and i wasn’t too fussy about the shape anyway.

If you were wondering why the rice paper didn’t work, it made it crunchy because of the ice. The brown sugar syrup wasn’t the problem at all. When the rice paper is with the colder temperatures, it makes it colder. If it is warm or on the heat, it’ll be soft like Boba. If you add any ice or too cold of beverages to it, it will turn crunchy and hard again. Hope this helped. 💗✨

Wow, I can't believe I tried something before Meimei showed it to me. I'm stoked to watch this! Edit: Anyone who is doing this, you should try soaking the rice paper in sugar water rather than plain water. I did this and it stayed nicely gummy! Also, you can use juice or add flavoring to the water for the initial soak and infuse it with the flavor. I've used cold juice and no cooking before putting it in a drink, and it stayed chewy. Maybe it also needs to be multiple layers for it to stay that way...ive never tried just one. Good luck to anyone who tries this! (I think they make a good snack on their own too, like a gummy candy.Id recommend cutting them into larger pieces for this. I'd also recommend scissors for cutting )

Huh, Sweden and Germany often have the same idea behind names for things. But in Sweden we call them vårrullar which literally translates to spring rolls. The type made with these translucent rice peppers are called färska vårrullar (fresh spring rolls) or vietnamesiska vårrullar (Vietnamese spring rolls). While the yellow fried kind are just plainly called vårrullar (spring rolls).

spring rolls are the ones made with dough, summer rolls are made with rice paper. It's because the spring rolls are more bundled up and toasty for the colder weather, whereas summerrolls are super light and are usually served cold.

I made tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) using rice paper and I'll tell you it never take so long to cook at all. So I think what's happening with your boba is that you cook them in much higher temperature since you're cooking them in sugar and for probably a long period of time which messed up the rice paper. I don't even think you need to cook them like actual boba at all, maybe just cook them just so it could soak the sugar mixture for a bit but not for too long and it will definitely be great.

I believe the problem with them getting crunchy may be due to your sugar syrup. You may have either reduced it down so much that it became a candy or all the stirring has caused it to crystallize. That's why when it gets cold it got crunchy/hard. Because with rice paper, you could soak it in ice cold water and it'll still soften due to moisture. You might want to try making a looser syrup. I'd say equal parts water and sugar and just cook till the sugar has just dissolved. Then put in your "boba" after you've boiled them.

I've always called them summer rolls when they were served cold (not fried) with peanut sauce and spring rolls when they are fried. My dad was Vietnamese and called them that.

In Austria we call the fried ones (I guess what you call egg rolls) spring rolls and the non-fried typical Vietnamese ones summer rolls^^

BTW I’m Scottish and Aussie half half and in Aussie Land (Australia) we say spring rolls as the places we get spring rolls are Chinese or Asian and we also have soldiers which are the same but VietnameseFrom places like rolled it’s a Vietnamese restaurant with lots of food and if you ever visit at Sydney in commonly used malls or as we say shopping centre in places like Rouse Hill and Castle Hill but there are many other places that’s just near me

I'm Australian, and we call them rice paper rolls! We also have Spring rolls, they are similar though, but I think Spring rolls are baked.

Ive seen them called fresh rolls, summer rolls, spring rolls and rice paper rolls. It all depends on the restaurant here in Canada :)

I saved this video for after I was off Keto 😭 a celebration for my ban from boba and rice. What a weird alternative to boba! Wonder if it would be like if you dipped the rice paper in syrup! Obviously it’s the temperature that’s causing the issue. But, some room temp milk with brown sugar doesn’t sound too bad either lol

Wow I never heard of making boba using rice paper before. People are getting really creative these days! 😃 Thanks for trying out the recipe for us. Now we know that it might not work well with the cold temperature, as the rice paper will get harder. Such a fun video as always Meimei 🤗
