Don’t be so hard on yourself. Just remember, artists paint from live models (nudes and portraits) all the time! Is their art less valued? If a landscape artist is painting what he/she sees in front of them aren’t they copying what they see? Does that diminish their skill? I don’t have a photographic memory but I too like to replicate, as realistically as I can, what I see. I think many artists who think that art is only valuable if it’s created without looking at something, probably can’t paint or draw realistic art! I love art that looks like a photograph. It’s a real challenge to be so accurate that someone can’t believe it was painted! You have to be “really able to see”what you’re looking at in order to paint realism. But you also have to have the talent and skill to paint what you see! It also takes real skill to be able to mix paint colors to capture the colors in nature so that they don’t look garish or cartoonish. Many fine artists can’t “see” the colors or replicate them and so they work in black and white. Are they less of an artist? So, don’t be so hard on yourself for copying a photograph. You only have to be careful not to plagiarize someone else’s work!

Beautiful, wonderful words of wisdom ^^ Can you believe this? My daughter in first grade was painting a picture of a house (all children have to do some picture) and my daughter put some mountains in the background. Her teacher told her "I'm very disapointed in you" and then later on, while all children were sitting on the mat, her teacher said "I won't mention any names, but sadly some students were using there imagination when it came to art." This teacher apparently majored in art when she went to university, and I was so shocked to hear that someone could say using imagination in art was a bad thing. I will show my daughter this video, I loved when you said always leave room for the imagination to flow. Much love and I'm excited to see more! Hopefully do some paintings today, you've given me a good dose of inspiration!

This teacher belongs to the many who kills creativity and imagination. I had a similar experience, decades ago with my son at school, 2 nd grade in art. They should be fired ! This country education needs to foster thinking and creativity.´I’m so sorry . Your daughter is lucky to have you. It is so damaging. The teacher shamed her. Unreal! I have been an art teacher and made sure to always support, guide, encourage from the place the child is. Enthousiasme, good self esteem follows, regardless of the results. It’s the process, that counts anyway. Thank you for sharing.

That happened to me with my own father (he's actually an artist and his work gives us food and everything we needed) but please, make that teacher never go near your daughter again. I abruptly stopped drawing at all, and when I give a shot and got recognized (basically every time I give a shot to drawing I got recognized by some artist friend) I just can't handle that recognition and got really sad because I just can't belive them. I'm a comic soul maker, but I just can write the story and point how the panels should go to my team, because I CAN'T DRAW without thinking I'm a failure to my father. Please make that man never go near your daughter again, creativity could be killed in such hurtfully way.

You can make a sketch of an idea in your head. Then take pictures of yourself or friends (like Alex Ross would do), make models on silly putty (like James Gurney) or even use 3D applications. Anything goes, and most commercial artist would do whatever it takes. Reference is a resource to bring life to your ideas not a shackle. And I believe there are people capable of drawing things from imagination, but not before soaking up tons of reference. To be honest, to me that's more of a party trick than an actual merit.
@hedgy3693 жыл бұрын
@Sumaya Ben Saad there are online tests which are good because you can find out exactly your strengths and weaknesses , I found i am good with faces but really fuzzy with everything else. 'How to draw' (drawing and sketching objects and environments from your imagination) by Scott Robertson helps me with objects and perspective.

When you do portrait painting, you are using a reference, the model. When you do plain air, you use reference, the scene in front of you. Art is not simply from the imagination. Artists have always had to use "references" in order to paint, even the greats.

I’ve watched all your current videos on the dog. This one really taught me how the base layer is so important. Also, your comments on references as important are for me very true. But, to have the courage to deviate from it to represent your own interpretation is for me, what art is. My process is to take photos and work from them in my paintings. You have solidified my confidence in this approach. Thanks for the tips.
