Honestly, as someone who also has ADHD and struggles with longterm commitment to projects/learning new skills, you're kind of an inspiration. You have no fear of picking up something entirely out of your comfort zone, giving yourself a stressful deadline, and pushing through the phase of being not good and feeling like you look silly (you didn't btw I just am familiar with the feeling). Very proud of you! You kick ass at everything you do!

@barrolboi5105 ADHD looks different in different people. Best way to know is to ask a professional (though depending on the country, state, even individual doctors, you may have people that under diagnose you just because of things like being a woman, being good in school, having a successful career). Even though you can be ADHD and any of those things. Common signs are: really hard to focus on anything not interesting; hyperfocusing on things you love; easily lose track of time a lot; trouble learning in traditional learning/education systems; and many more

Completely agree with the accessibility, I was a guitarist who turned into a drummer because of this point. If you learn a single drum beat, you can pretty much play along with any song! Drums are very improvisational, whereas guitar (or anything else with notes) you need to learn the song or at least the key it is in first or you will not be able to play along to something. I hope you keep at it and they give as much joy as they have given me over the years!

As a guitarist turned bassist I can completely agree with learning all aspects of song making will help you improve. I couldn’t understand what my old drummer was talking about when he was saying that he was needing me to be intime as the bassist because I was trying to follow him. Then i learned how to play a couple of songs on drums (also adhd took for ever to learn) and then it kinda just clicked one day.

Kevin might not be a drumming genius. But he is certainly a life genius. The fact that he is an adult with ADHD, trying something really fecking hard for the very first time, that he's willing to fail, and be frustrated, and look like an idiot while still recording and showing this to all of us, is more than enough reason for me to respect and admire him. You'll be a top drummer one day Kevo! Thanks for inspiring us and making our days lighter with your great charisma. You're amazing dude! ❤

As someone who spent like 9 years learning music theory, its complicated. It's definitely a useful skill for anyone with an interest in music (it's kind of like another language), but it isn't hugely practical outside of more classical instruments (violins, trumpets, clarinets, that kinda thing). But honestly, I am always completely inspired by everything you do Kevin, and I know I'm just one of like a thousand comments but I hope you know how much you mean to the people who follow you, and how much we're inspired by you and proud of what you accomplish.

@@starcrysis23 as someone who has been doing music related things for nearly 30 years, I totally disagree with the original post's idea that music theory is only practical for classical instruments. I do agree, that if you think of music as a language, then music theory is its grammar. And like all grammars, it is as useful as you let it be. It can give you a lot of tools, and you have to think about which tools are useful in different situations. Since music theory is often taught from a classical perspective, some of it will be less directly impactful for your own music, but I can just about guarantee that if you learn it with an open mind, you will see how even those seemingly unrelated ideas help you understand and appreciate the genres you do enjoy. It takes patience, but if you take the effort to see how it can fit into your style of music, theory will help a lot - even if it just gives you a vocabulary to talk about things in your music that you didn't know the words for before, that is a significant help in making it easier to think through your own music.

@@bricelory9534 I completely agree! I am by no means even close to being a master in music theory, but I do know it's helped me appreciate music more. I kid you not, music theory and knowledge gained from it has even been able to reach into Black Metal for me. (That sentence was a little weird in terms of wording, so I will clarify, I have been listening to black metal for a very long time, and I am trying to say that knowing music theory is still good, even in such a peculiar musical genre.)

I also think its really refreshing how honest he is about life/mental health/lack of motivation/frustration getting in the way of developing new skills and how that affects his timelines. And how he finds alternative ways of teaching himself, ways that work for him as an individual. I actually started drawing again after the art/painting video. And its felt really damn good, honestly, and Ive been finding tutorials to get better that work for my learning style. Tip for practicing most physical skills (and probably most non-physical ones as well): Notice how Kevin goes through phases of settling into a rhythm and feeling confident, then faltering and feeling like it's slipping away again. Always try to finish your sessions during the highs rather than the lows. Even though it's tempting to keep going for as long as it feels smooth and natural, you really don't want to wear yourself out until you start to stumble again. Not only will that leave you in a discouraged mood, it focuses your brain on the wrong pattern between practices (especially overnight when your brain transfers things from short-term to long-term memory in your sleep), which can actually further cement the wrong muscle memory over time. End on a high note, and you're more likely to start on one next time!

@corvinredacted

@@youtubeuniversity3638 It doesn't have to be spectacular or anything! Just try to finish your sessions on a relatively high note for you. If you're thinking, "Hey, I feel like I'm kind of getting it!" or, "Things are going a little better now!" just try not to push on too long or overthink it. That's often a good time to wrap up and come back to it later.
@corvinredacted
@corvinredacted 6 ай бұрын
@@littleferrhis This is especially true with more anxious students or more stressful activities like learning to fly! It's the partner of the "get back on the horse" axiom. If you have an unpleasant experience it's often better to try for a better one before walking away for the day, or that anxiety can really settle in over the break. I definitely found that to be true with gymnastics. Of course, a truly traumatic experience can make a high-risk activity too dangerous by lowering situational awareness. Flying is a great example there as well. There's a reason you don't just shove a crew onto their next flight after a serious aviation incident. Gotta practice good CRM and assess your mental state!

good progress man, from one drummer to another, I would just like to give you a bit of a tip bud, and that is: When you're deep into the art of drumming, don't just focus on the beats-dive into dynamics. Experiment with varying your stick intensity and control. Play a pattern softly, then gradually increase the intensity, and finally, bring it back down. This adds a whole new dimension to your playing and keeps things interesting. Dynamics can turn a good drummer into a great one. Give it a shot! (hope this helps)

This is honestly one of my favorite videos of you by far. I love that you talked about how you struggle with staying on task (same) but showed just how rewarding it is with something that’s easier for people who struggle with that. Not to mention your lyrics will forever play in my head instead of the real ones. Keep up the great content Kevin. You never cease to make me smile. 😊

These videos are like the kindest push to get me to keep working on some of the many art projects I abandoned partway through. I don't know if this is the big project you'd been working on in the background, but I definitely appreciate this video! You've got to be one of the only people I will click on the video of, regardless of if it's even remotely related to the kinds of videos I'll typically watch. I _also_ deeply appreciate the casual mention of ADHD. I was diagnosed when I was very little, and told not to tell people that I had it. So the destigmatizing is much appreciated.

The level of coordination and independence you developed in 30 days is amazing to see--especially considering you took a break in the middle! I think playing all of the "ands" on the hi-hat isn't something most people would pick up so quickly. And props to you for having the confidence to record the drums all in one take; that's something I still struggle with after 15 years of drumming! In addition, the jigsaw puzzle analogy is a great way to explain the breakthroughs that I sometimes experience when learning new things on the drums. I'll have to start using that. As someone who also has ADHD, I always find it inspiring to see the level of discipline and determination people exhibit when learning new things like this. Thanks for documenting your journey, Kevin!

As a lifelong musician (and longtime fan of you, and ADHD haver) this brings immeasurable joy to me. A lot of people are really put off by the prospect of starting an instrument and for you to get over the hump AND stick with it which is another thing that bounces people away is awesome, not in a weird condescend-y way but I'm proud as heck of you

As a recovering perfectionist, I have a hard time restarting if my plan didn’t go how I pictured it or I don’t pick something up as fast as I want. It’s nice to be reminded that what matters is that you keep trying.

The 1234 beat, the bum tuh bum tsh, it was just really great reliving it through you. I suspect I also have ADHD, so I also would go months between learning XD. *You did amazing for the amount of time you gave yourself.
