As an Italian American who grew up while the jersey shore was airing, I remember my family HATING the show with a passion. Not only did it revive the term guido, which was against my family derogatorily for generations, but because it made us look like idiots. Italian Americans are very proud of our culture and the biggest thing we took pride in is our work ethic. I was raised to give 110% into anything I do, whether I want to or not, because that’s who we are. My family claimed the jersey shore made us look like lazy fucks who do nothing but party! That being said, my family still participated in guido culture 😅 my mom was known for her big glasses and coach bag and she make us sit outside in our bathing suits to tan constantly 😂 plus my mom made sure I never left the house as a kid without some type of sparkle on me

This is hilarious, as someone who grew up raised by Italians in the actual area of the show, I had the totally opposite experience. A lot of the people I grew up with from Staten Island, Jersey, and even Brooklyn felt bizarrely seen by the show, mostly middle aged Italian American women I knew and younger kids in our schools wanting to emulate it. Most people who dismissed it around here did it as more of a “reality tv rots your brain” thing, rather than any cultural reason, because to some extent it is an accurate depiction of the culture there, especially Staten and nearby Jersey at the time (minus all the reality tv show manipulation and plying young people with copious alcohol) Also my Brooklynite parents refer to themselves as Guidos, all of the time. My mom and all her friends were totally crazy about Jersey Shore and Mob Wives in the early 2000s when we were growing up there and yes, she made me tan by the pool too :).
@uschilou
@uschilou 2 ай бұрын
@littlegoblin6923 Of course! I also had to learn that tanning is bad for my skin. My step mom told me to lay out on tinfoil slathered in baking oil. I never did that but I definitely tanned. Oh well

Your video is well done but as an Italian i think you missed an important factor. I think it's worth to note that the Guido style basically takes pride to imitate the progressive music club-scene present in Italy in the 90s. For Italians it's clear to see that Jersey shore arrives a little late to the trend of italo-disco movements of the 90s and early 2000. Those parties were attended by poor, working-class youths that were excluded by high-class discos. So they were able to experiment new electronic music and clothes, uniting cheap affordable gym clothes to extravagant hair styles, accesories and patterns + the only jewlery they had at home to showcase= the gold baptism chains

I used to be gyaru so I love the quick shoutout to the fluffy legwarmers/boots haha! I definitely wore those. At the time of the Jersey Shore tv show, I saw loads of similarities between the two styles and did dress up as Snooki once too (which wasn't hard because my wardrobe was gyaru, just needed a black wig).

As an OJ guidette (a millennial Sicilian woman whos grandparents were immigrants) and resonated with the culture of the show, I love this. Use the term!! It is what it issss. My dad literally has multiple graphic tees that state, "proud to be Italian." Which he wears with his fedora while driving his drag car quoting The Fonz. Guido's are unapologetically working class first gen glam mixed with mob mentality and.. we know it
@namedrop721
@namedrop721 2 ай бұрын
And yet many others find the term offensive as it was actually used against them. I didn’t experience being hunted for my race like my grandparents did, but that doesn’t mean I can discount their experience or anyone else’s. 😘

I grew up in an area of Toronto called "Little Italy" and i totally lived this lifestyles... although we were called ginos/ginas. Life was about club hoping, tanning, suped up Hondas, freestyle music, hooking up, going to the mall, drinking and alot of hairspray. There were also turf wars between the local italians/portuguese and black gangs. We also have a beach kinda like Jersey shore called "Wasaga Beach" and it was total debauchery. Everyone (young and old) would congragate there every long wknd. It would take hours just to get down the strip which was about a mile long. It was a wild time but I wouldnt trade it for anything in the world.

Most people forget that the cast was from NY, and visited the Jersey Shore. I'm a lifelong Gen X NJ resident, and I have periodically reminded lots of people that "not everyone" dressed and acted like that.
@ImKodiBrooks

Multiple members of the cast were out of state, but a few of them were nj natives. A big part of the drama on the show was nj not wanting to claim them and being very territorial. I think the territorial aggression is a very tri state area characteristic, as an nj native myself have observed. Growing up ten minutes away from seaside heights, I know the locals hated them. Myself included for a while lol until I became self aware.

I think you did well and traversed the multifaceted universe with a perfect sense of unbiased knowledge. I enjoy that you adhered the aesthetic to the different styles and aesthetics that mash together to create it, including the northeast beach culture that’s very much standout on its own. As a local, I can attest the beach culture here is more casual than that of New England and not necessarily more “put together” but more blinged out and metropolitan than that of beach cultures farther south, like Florida or the Carolina’s. As an Italian, I think the leopard print became synonymous with the women because of its glamor and connection to wealth. Outright displays of wealth were definitively a part of the north eastern tri state area look. Fur coats go hand in hand with that and that leads into the “mob wife” aesthetic which has been connected to New York/ New Jersey Italian culture for a long time now. I know from being a scene kid at the time in high school, the cues were beginning to blend as the rise of social media began. I remember leopard and zebra stripes became popular in bright neon colors for the scene queens, and the gothic symbols of the angel wings, roses, and skulls and tattoo themes were also appealing to the alternative crowd. For this reason, my style definitely started to blend into the jersey shore aesthetic and could be a reason it blended for Snooki as well. Now that I think about it, one thing the scene aesthetic and jersey shore aesthetic have in common is how bold they are. Both aesthetics have are not afraid to stand out.

What I think is kind of interesting about Jersey Shore is how a very regional subculture's fashion aesthetic is now exported via social media & reality tv. As a lifelong west coaster, it's all very foreign to me from a cultural stand point since I have no reference for it(guido culture, wtf is that?). Cali has had different influences from different cultures, predominantly Hispanic & Asian (depending on region) as well as African American & too many others to list since we're so spread out & suburban. Add to that the climate & cultural differences between NorCal & SoCal with SoCal mainly getting signal boosted via pop culture (surfing, skating, music, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, etc) Believe me, there is more to Cali than LA & Disneyland :) It's so much easier to be exposed to & influenced by aesthetics, music & fashion from outside your regional location now. Idk if that's a bad thing per se, but it can water down & diminish the uniqueness of certain subcultures especially when mass marketed. I hear pro & con arguments regarding the American melting pot of cultures &the effects of globalization on cultures outside the US. I guesss time will tell...

The only thing that makes it derogatory are the people using it as some kind of slang term making Italians look like low class trash which Is what the Jersey Shore time did...
