So we traveled to East Asia to film a six-part series about beauty, style, and shopping and we’re kicking it off with a tour of some of Tokyo's most interesting vending machines! Japan has a TON of vending machines that you can purchase a variety of goods from, and we visited 4 different machines all over the city to investigate some of the strange ones we had heard about. We got some canned bread, hornet larva, spicy snacks, hot soup in a can, and mystery box items from a ~creepy~ vending machine corner!
A huge thanks to RinRin for helping us! You can check her out here:

The “creepy vending machines” is actually for emergency purposes because there was a big earthquake and the building fell down and killed a few people a long time ago. There’s funny jokes on the vending machines to make people not panic and feel relaxed. The “mystery boxes” with inappropriate comments on the box is an adult video (or porn to be accurate). The one Safiya picked is an old comedy for entertainment when there’s nothing to do while an evacuation. They don’t really replace the foods, so I hope the ones Safiya got wasn’t expired. (I know this because I’m Japanese and I can read Japanese)

Bread was literally the first food ever "canned". Napoleon offered a prize if anyone could come up with a way to preserve food for his armies on the march. Someone poured bread dough in a wine bottle, corked it, and boiled it to cook the bread. The bottle had to be broken to get the bread out. That's how canning started.

No, you're all wrong. Japan is a small country. So the cheapest and easiest small business. In the 90's American infomercials touted real estate as get rich quick. In Japan real estate is not an option but vending machines are. Every time I read a manga about a poor otaku, I ask myself, why don't they buy a used vending machine? ALL the other otaku did.

I defiantly miss these from my experience in Japan. Growing up in the 90's in Canada, I remember we had coffee and hot chocolate machines, ice cream machines etc. Nothing like in Japan. Although in the mid to late 2000s I noticed that vending machines were much less common in Canada. I wonder why the sophisticated Japanese vending machines haven't become popular elsewhere... If you put the pizza machine on a collage campus there probably be line ups for it.

Vice Dea I'm not sure the maintenance would be good, given the tendency not to maintain the building itself. And it would be economically impractical for the vending machine franchise to have maintenance staff cleared to go into schools (background checks, clean criminal record, impossible to accuse of child abuse etc., never caught by the vice squad for minor violations that only sound awful, etc.)

My favorite Japanese vending machine product was half-frozen Coke in a plastic bottle. The machines partially froze the pop, which stayed cool while you drank it. In Canada, they have a Japanese import concept of fresh layered cake in vending machines. There are about 20 varieties of cake, sliced in portions for one person.
