HTC Vive announced the “Vive Flow” VR Immersive Glasses today! Unlike a normal VR headset, this device is made to take on-the-go with a center focus around mental wellbeing. Definitly an interesting product with a poor price point. I have no issues with it being anti-Apple as there is still ' issuez ' regarding the Apple store and what apps can be in there. Always have a working and updated backup system, just not like me and have a Linux 286 monochrome laptop ONLY because it still has a real printer port built on it.

I feel like this will be one of those products that does more for the VR/AR field itself, rather than being the product we all flock to. Companies like Oculus, Apple, Google etc will all see how VR and AR tech really is desired in Glasses form and make their own iterations that will be lightyears better!

I think it could be successful if it is marketed well? Not sure they will do that though as they still appear quite hesitant and think the pricing reflects that also. More products you sell the cheaper they are to produce, the fewer the more expensive. That's how Facebook has been able to make a profit on their cheap headsets.
@LarryMonteforte
@LarryMonteforte 2 жыл бұрын
I think they already see that, at least Meta/Facebook has been talking about it a ton, and I know Samsung has been working on good AR glasses for awhile. They are just not rushing it to market before it is ready / cheap enough for the masses. I think the past year or so has been a time for society to really become aware of this next wave of tech and generate some demand. It will take a little while but ideas like the Flow I think will be mainstream eventually, once your average joe sees the potential. I predict a future where phones are bundled with AR glasses, the cost being offset by smaller / less expensive screens on the phone itself in favor of using the AR glasses to consume media you would desire a bigger screen for.

Nice job explaining this product. I have a Quest 2 and I don't use it as much as I would have expected, because despite how much I try (and how much money I waste on games that I never finish), I just don't find myself playing video games as much as I used to. I find myself using it more for watching immersive videos, and chilling out with stuff like Tripp. I sometimes feel like the Quest 2 is just too bulky/heavy for chilling, so I personally love the idea of the idea of something more lightweight like Vive Flow. Seems perfect for me, except for yeah... another Apple fanboy here.

It's a refreshing change from the usual vanilla content drops most VR channels put out. Just think of the wildest most economically unsound format for a traditional magazine style program & leverage the power of VR to achieve it.

My mom and I tried VR for the first time recently. We only went into the Steam loading room, but my mom went from humoring me mid-panic attack, to appearing relaxed and a little excited with what she was experiencing. Having access to a quiet, low stress, very clean room with a view, helped her immensely. I felt it too. Stepping out of my city apartment mess and into a perfectly sunny day. It's an experience. Later, I tried American Truck Simulator with the vr beta option. It felt much more natural being able to freely whip my head around while driving. So I agree. Even if it's just something as casual as a change of environment, it can do wonders for a person's mental health.

I have an Android phone and I'm not expecting to buy this. I was thinking about it for my mom but the 1.6K resolution per eye and the lack of controller or hand tracking makes that a difficult sell at the price point. At $300 I might well have. Edit: especially with the competitors on the horizon like Arpara AIO for $100 more.

You _can_ connect most Vive controllers to your phone via Bluetooth, so it's just a matter of making games for the Flow that can use them. And maybe making some controllers that do all the tracking themselves without needing lighthouses. The second one is probably the bigger problem. The Android-exclusive frustration is understandable, but coming from IT, the incompatibility is also understandable. iOS does not play nice with apps that need to interact with system security settings, or that need to exchange large amounts of data with peripherals. And I can only imagine how bad the battery drain must be while using the headset, especially with iOS being notorious as a battery killer.

Thanks for this video! I've been eager to learn about this product. Android is definitely an issue for me too after splurging heavily on my iPhone 11 Pro... I guess I'll have to get an Android phone now though. Sigh. This seems straight up relevant for AltVR content, I hope they have plans to increase apps developed for it as it will still be a kind of niche product maybe. I know that you only had access to this for a short time, but I would love to hear more about the visual fidelity, lenses, colours, etc. This is 6DOF right? Although you won't necessarily use it for room-scale, having it 6DOF so just slight leaning towards either direction will not discomfort I think is important for them... Also a question I have: does it matter what "GPU" you have on your phone, does everything run directly from the phone or how what exact role does the phone have here? Thanks again for the vid!
@TheVirtualRealityShow
@TheVirtualRealityShow 2 жыл бұрын
Everything looked really clear to me :) I didn't really notice any SDE myself... I get immersed pretty easily though, so I'm sure some other people wouldn't be as happy with those specs as I am. Not sure exactly all the info on the lenses, but they do have diopter dials! Colors were very vivid, they really stood out in Tripp... and yes, 6DOF- there was a couple applications where if you stared in a certain direction for a few seconds, it would reset your view to match ^_^ really nifty for laying down especially. I wasn't told of any phone specifications needed outside of having 5G. You basically use the phone like a remote control, tapping different sections of the screen (holding the top, double tapping the bottom, etc) to perform different actions. Space Slurpies was a good demo of the phone being 3DOF as a controller so that when you need to move your worm towards you, you don't need to break your arms flipping it 180 degrees xD Hope that clarifies some things a bit!!!!

@@TheVirtualRealityShow ahh yes, definitely. sounds exciting. Regarding colors, I believe I read it was some OLED stuff potentially? I think there is a potential for these products, as an example, I’m just now setting up some Bose Sleepbuds that cost like almost 300 USD, made just for sleeping. If VR meditation/relaxation can get really good then why not. I like that this fits in a backpack (arguably Quest 2 does too), but this won’t take up all that space. And they look kinda cool.

If I’m not mistaken, there was a ~$100 off deal with the Oculus Quest 2 if you buy 2. So ~$299 for the first one and ~$199 for the second when purchased together . Therefore you could literally buy 2 Oculus Quest 2 HMDs for less then one Vive Flow. This would allow you to have one Quest 2 in two locations thus eliminating the hassle of carrying an HMD between two locations. Alternatively you could just carry one wherever you go knowing you had a spare or just give one away as a gift. Also of note, quick experience should work with Quest 2 and hand tracking should also make it possible to have that less cumbersome feel. I just don’t see the point of the Vive Flow. It feels like a marketing mistake if not a design mistake. It’s 2021 going on 2022 and this feels like the Oculus Go,…….for ~$500 USD. Want nothing to do with FB? Then “Oculess” has got you covered.

Whhhyyy Vive!!! I mean price point seems high again and no iPhone support?!? Is that an iStore “can’t have an external payment system” issue with Viveport just like with Epic?

Even though Quest and Quest 2 have been pretty solid for me. It's still sad to see they are the only ones delivering the goods. It does get me excited for the future however. Just imagine a full blown headset that is light and comfortable with all the features of a full blown headset. Oh well maybe in 2 years we'll something like that. HTCs Marketting strategy with dropping hints is not helping there cause either
