In this writing vlog I tried worldbuilding like Hugo Award winning author N.K. Jemisin!! I've been excited to try out her process for a LONG time 🙂
The writing vlog contains me sharing, learning from, and following in the example of N.K. Jemisin's worldbuilding process.
This includes many different aspects of worldbuilding: creating of the planet, continent(s), and other aspects of the physical world; designing a civilization occupying this world; and creating multiple story premises in the style of N.K. Jemisin to be set in this world.
It was quite a bit of work, but also a lot of fun and I learned a ton!!
What do you think of this style of writing vlog? Do you like these more "writing experiment" style vlogs? Are there any others you'd like to see? Let me know in the comments below and I'll consider making the video

How do you go about worldbuilding? Have you ever tried a method like N.K. Jemisin's??

I'm trying to write a fantasy story and, oddly enough, it's as if I've been following her guideline this whole time I thought I was being difficult by not being able to progress without getting these things sorted out, but I see I wasn'tm

Here I am procrastinating world building because I hit a wall with it. Time to give this a shot!

I've used it 4 or so times now and I've found it really useful for cutting through the indecision of infinite possibilities! I also created a simple Google Doc Template based on this worldbuilding method so you may find that useful too: bit.ly/worldbuilding-template Let me know how it goes :)

This is amazing! I LOVE N.K. Jemisin! I had no idea this resource existed though. Thank you so much, not only for sharing it but for going through it with your own world-building. It sounds like a really cool concept that you're developing! And what a great concept for a video too! You did a great job with all of this 👏 I can't wait to check out your other videos. You've definitely earned a subscriber! 😉

I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it!! I still like that story/world and will have to do something with it one of these days. Thanks for subscribing, I'll look for you in the comments :) By the way, if you want to see more worldbuilding stuff, this is my recent video documenting the process of worldbuilding for a new epic fantasy novel: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nuCeprSrss-tiqs.html

Good video. I've never used this method but I tend to worldbuild in ways similar to it. I haven't read the outline but I feel like theres a lot of building apon non material culture without a lot of work on material culture. Then again, maybe that's just being into the art aspect. I also usually tend to create people groups and then put them in a climate and show how they adapt rather than the other way around.

How she spoke of Mad Max Fury Road was way off. That movie was trash, because of the injection of feminism in Hollywood when activists were trying to destroy franchises for a quick buck, just like they tried to do with the latest version of Ghostbusters. If you remember when the movie was being promoted, they were selling us on Tom Hardy replacing Mel Gibson and if he could hold up to the role, especially after his success as Bane. The only thing she said was correct was "bait & switch." This is the same formula they used promoting Star Wars: The Force Awakens. All the promotional hype was saturated around Finn in a Storm Trooper suit and selling the idea through visuals of him holding a light saber. But right before the movie came out, then they started giving light to Rey making her the real main character. It was so bad that they even kept the idea alive after the movie was done that Finn will (maybe) become a Jedi. To keep a long story short, here is the problem: Activists are going to destroy the writer's space just as they destroyed the creativity in Hollywood and video games. Whether I'm reading a book, watching a movie/show or playing a game, I want to be entertained, not indoctrinated. I can turn on the news for that.
