Let's do something super chill - art in a coloring book! I've been focusing on rest lately, and I'll share my thoughts on that while we turn a coloring page into a stress-relieving work of art! This is quite different than my usual content, but I hope you take the time to listen to why I decided to do this! I hope you also give yourself time and space to rest. We all need it!

"I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service." Vs "Our worth is not measured in our productivity." One I related to and the other I needed to hear. Thank you, Mira! You're amazing.

The thought that has completely revolutionised my life when I read it somewhen was: sometimes resting IS the most productive thing you can do. You literally cannot eliminate rest from your life, it's vital. And especially with art and creativity, you cannot pour out from an empty decanter. You need to recharge and you need to fill yourself up, if you want to be able to create. Not to mention that this form of "resting" is still very actively, productively working on your technique and/or keeping warmed up. So it's not even lazy lol

I realized 20 years ago when I was 15 that I didn’t need to stop coloring because I was growing up. Unfortunately I took a few years off before the epiphany and buying my first new coloring book as a teen, from ages 15-30ish I was weird and different for coloring as an adult. Then the adult coloring book wave hit and I was like, finally you guys caught up. Everything you mentioned about how therapeutic it is is completely valid.

I am an artist and I really enjoy doing coloring books. It is sooo relaxing not to think about what to paint and simply enjoying the art and the art material I'm using. It is like a cleansing shower for my brain and often helps to kick-start my creativity. So, to say it short, it's therapeutic.

I enjoyed watching this relaxing, chilled out video so much. As someone with several chronic health conditions it’s hard not to beat myself up when my body requires more rest and down time than other peoples. It’s so easy to fall into worries of what other people will think and feeling like giving my body the rest it needs makes me “lazy”. So thank you for this reminder that we need to listen to our bodies and not the pressures society puts on us all. Everyone is different and what works for you may not work for me and that’s okay! I hope your pregnancy is going well & I’m so happy you’re paying attention to what you need to keep you happy and healthy- not all the pressures of what you feel like others expect of you.😌

Thanks for sharing your perspective on this. It really is hard not to beat ourselves up over taking rest and listening to our bodies sometimes. But you're right - everyone is different, and we all need varying levels of rest. I hope you get to enjoy some guilt-free rest this week. Sending lots of love! 💜

I really love the color by number books for adults. That way I don’t have to think what color goes where and I love not being able to tell what it is going to be at the end. I have them very simple, but also extreme ones and Disney. Usually put up an audiobook and just enjoy the process of figuring out what ut will be when finished. Same with diamond painting, even though I usually do know what they will become, but loved the mystery ones a lot to (just blank with a symbol, no color).

I needed to hear those words. I haven't been productive in years because of family issues, and I truly felt terrible. So thank you for reminding me that our worth is not measured in our productivity. I hope your pregnancy is going well, mentally prepare for the hardships that come with kids (mom of two here) and enjoy the beautiful moments. It's a wonderful journey for those who want and chose to have kids. Sending great vibes, momma!
@LeanneRaine

One hard lesson I had to learn as a mom is that you can't take care of others unless you take care of yourself first. I got cancer at 35 as a single mom with a special needs six-year-old. It taught me people NEED rest and how to ask for help when I was tired. I've been watching a few colorists on youtube lately. I think being able to focus on just the colors lets you add shading and textures that can often get skipped when you get burned out on a piece. Thanks for the hang out sess, Mira, and best wishes to you and your family

I think many, many people completely underestimate the artistic skill that goes into a well shaded coloring page - even if the artist is using a reference. There is still enormous time and skill needed to get the faces realistic and the shading looking good. I once gave away a coloring page I had finished as a present to someone. I spent probably two months getting the colors to match the reference and blending colors together to get the result I wanted. All the while I knew that the person receiving it, might never acknowledge the skill and dedication that went into it, because 'it was just a coloring page'.

Agreed. When you're an artistic person dealing with depression and anxiety, you have to learn this the hard way. And even then it might not sink in. Sometimes our bodies just need rest, and that's okay.

I used to draw a lot when i was a child and teenager, then i stopped because there was other stuff to worry about. I am chronically depressed and have some other problems since years now and i wanted to start drawing again, but my head kept telling me constantly: You can't draw, you are not able to create. So my best friend showed me 4-5 years ago coloring books for adults (Kerby Rosanes, Johanna Basford, Hanna Karlzon, Millie Marotta are my favourites

I do love coloring as a restful break as I have two part time jobs, two graduate courses, and a lot of personal projects. There are just some times that I feel like am approaching burnout and I can always bring myself back by coloring a page and a nap. And as an aside I can’t imagine what growing a human being let alone two at the same time feels like on one’s body so you deserve a break.

As someone with a chronic illness and chronic pain, rest is so important for me, but there's only so much staring at the phone/laptop/tv I can take! I absolutely love colouring and have for a long time. I am not the best at drawing my own images/illustrations (I am still learning) so I have developed my skills with shading, blending, dimensions, light sources etc by colouring other people's artwork. I have seen huge improvements in my skills since I started colouring again properly as an adult (I always dipped in and out, usually stealing colouring pages from younger cousins/niece/nephews/kids I babysat for etc) from the one colour per part of the illustration, no shading or anything like that, just block colours to now using many layers, various blending techniques, several shades of the same colour and showing a light source to provide depth and shadow etc and the end results are something I am much happier with and prouder of! I get a lot of crap from people who think of kiddies colouring books, thick black lines, crappy paper, cheap nasty pencils/crayons with no pigment and ludicrously simple designs like a little triangle-sailed boat or a cartoon bunny with a carrot 🤣 They think of a kids colouring book but not the adult skills and perspective that goes with it. I enjoy showing them my pieces and seeing their Jaws drop more than I probably should 😬🤣

I was born with a chronic illness, (Sickle Cell Anemia) so learning how to rest was one of the most difficult lessons I had to learn. I repeatedly ran myself into a wall for 95% of my life; until I was forced to stop in 2019. It's been the most difficult time of my life as now I'm basically homebound, but it was a very important lesson to learn. It's very hard to not feel useless when you can't work. I thank God for giving the message that productivity isn't my reason for living. I'm still worthy of love & respect. What you do for God & how you love & treat others are truly the reasons for living. I would've never learned that I loved art without this trial. I'm so thankful for the YT art community for helping me find a new purpose. Sometimes you find yourself when you're at rest.

Thank you for sharing - very beautifully said. I'm so glad you know you're still worthy of love and respect despite your level of productivity! Totally agree with everything you said. 💜

Thank you so much for this video! Honestly this was a reminder I think I needed, the reminder that it's ok to be creative but rest creatively instead of go go go

Learning not to equate self worth with productivity is extremely difficult. I have a few coloring books which I have not done much with, but it seems like a really fun way to play with colors and shading and mediums that I'm not super familiar with (markers, colored pencils--I usually work with watercolors and acrylics). No pressure, just fun, but still stimulates the artistic side of the brain.

Everybody needs a break and some relaxation sometimes! I had no idea that you had twins! That's so exciting! I know this video is from a year ago so I am super late finding out lol but I still wanted to say congrats and I hope you enjoy every moment of rest that you get! Much love and hugs!

The nice thing about using coloring books is it allows us to play and learn/work on our skills, stress free! I have learned a lot with my colored pencils and coloring books.

I love this video just as much as your other videos and although you don't need to justify yourself for doing something simpler, I think you explained the importance of rest really well cuz I get self conscious of what other people might think and get stressed about expectations too and this is brilliant and peaceful💙☁️

I’m thrilled if I can keep in the lines when I’m coloring and you make yours a replica of a Thomas Kincaid painting. 😯 That’s nuts. I wanna learn how to be that creative someday. But for now I’m gonna just work on adding some highlights and shadows. Lol great work.
