I have always liked the look of scrimshaw art, so I decided I would try it out! But instead of trying to hunt down all the correct tools, I just bought a kit from Mollyjogger, a heritage brand that sells a ton of awesome outdoorsy products.
www.mollyjogger.com/products/...
Give this video a watch to see how I try and carve a bear scene out of the bone handle of a knife! Just a hint, it was harder than it looks. Enjoy!

Looks like an un marked Rough Ryder knife. Great quality knives.

The knife is clearly marked withe RR stamp on the blade. I think it is the RR Little Mustang. Some Rough Ryder white bone models do dot have a shield od a bolster stamp now.

I bought a tourist scrimshawed knife. I scraped the obviously machine ingraved design off, bought some india ink and am looking for information on scrimshawing. Your video was the first I found and will be ordering a kit. Thank you for sharing.

I wonder if the ink stains the polished bone parts if you leave it on to dry. If you darken the surface before carving, you'll see your lines a bit better (if you can wipe it off later).

Great video! Scrimshawing is so much fun and relaxing. Definitely takes practice though. I have a real sperm whale tooth I want to scrimshaw but I need more practice.

Why do ppl do videos saying this is the first time I’ve ever done this then proceed to show HOW TO DO IT!! Just dumb.

@@BravetheWoods …not so much specifically your video but there are a lot of such videos. “I don’t know what I’m doing but let me show you how to do this.” I wouldn’t expect someone to come fix my plumbing who says, “hey I’ve never done this so let em take a crack at it”. I wouldn’t expect a professor to say hey I teach math so let me teach you how to bake this bread etc… take My nastiness is taken out here but it’s a general thing. I think ppl who teach should attain at least a certain level of expertise first.

@@bobrenda1618 sure I get that. I guess I just felt like my video was clearly labeled as my first attempt. Think of this more of a review or cataloguing my creative exploration. Figured if others were interested in trying they might want to see how hard it is for someone who has never done it. Never trying to waste a viewer’s time by putting hours of my time into making content to live on the internet for free.

@@BravetheWoods All true and fine and I think my reaction is also valid but it’s no biggie. As a viewer looking to learn something I want to see a video done by someone who is experienced and can teach me. I guess I’m not taking into consideration that youtube is also used as a hobby and a social vehicle. And yes it’s free and takes the one who posts time and effort. I assume the ones posting enjoy that process too so I’m not inclined to elevate it to the level of a big humanitarian offering (😆). At any rate maybe we’re on two different tracks in the spectrum of the “youtube experience’. I just want a fast reference learning thing and you seem to want to share your journey etc (I’m sure I haven’t fully considered your motivations…). At any rate there you have it…my over analysis and your take. In the end it no big deal. Maybe I should have kept my snark to myself. Peace. Consider this case closed.

@@bobrenda1618 thanks for the honesty. I shouldn’t really engage in these posts, just sometimes I have moments of frustration because of the time I put into content. I’m probably being over sensitive. Aside from all that, you made some very valid points about instructional videos. I feel the same way as a viewer and will make sure to keep that in mind for future, instructional videos I produce. It was a pleasure having a civil conversation with you. Thanks for even watching my videos at all. Best of luck to you.
