I have a question and please forgive me if it sounds stupid . I don't have any electrical knowledge but I was wondering could you make the generator spin faster than the motor by using a gear system commonly used on bicycle with the bigger and smaller gear ratios? I hope that makes sense. Please let me know I've been thinking about this for awhile.

this video is great for 1 big reason. Most people just use a transformer to convert the 12v to 120v which is fine for heaters and light bulbs but won't work for 1 big reason for electronics. FREQUENCY. car alternators have a frequency in the 1000's while the grid and electronics need 60hz (50hz in some places). this method makes it so its 120v at 60 hz (if spun at the correct speed). I'm going to be attempting this to build a generator that can synchronize with the grid (look up generator synchronization) to see if I can feed the grid using a engine and this generator along with some electronics to control the electromagnet. Keeping the engine at max throttle and controlling the field strength to control the voltage (exactly like a real power plant)

If you can remake the regulator to keep a constant voltage. Turn it to high voltage DC, send the power to a H-Bridge, feed the H-Bridge with SPWM to produce a usable 50-60hz 120v ac output (like in a switching inverter, 12vdc -> something high voltage DC -> H-bridge with spwm -> usable power)

Well, for starters, increasing it's loops to 60 was totally unnecessary as Alternators produce 110 volts to start with. It's the diodes and voltage regulator that lower it to 12 volts. And the output depends on the voltage you apply to the brushes, which create the magnetic field on the armature. 12 volts applied to the brushes will produce 110 volts output in the coils inside the casing.
@stoner4
@stoner4 9 ай бұрын
so if he only removes the diode and runs the altrernator he''ll have the 120 volts? so to get the 220 he has to run 2 alternators to double the current?
@bigrenegade7121
@bigrenegade7121 9 ай бұрын
@@stoner4 In answer to the first part: All the diodes do are to make sure only ONE polarity is traveling down that line. So the diodes are placed in there to change it from AC current to DC current. The voltage regulator is what lowers the voltage to 12 volts. An alternator is basically a 3 phase generator. In response to the second: I live in the US so alternators here are designed to produce 110. In European countries the alternators might be produced differently and the actually AC output of those may be 220 volts. So I can't be certain that it would require 2 alternators to get 220, but I do know that, to my knowledge, it would require 2. There is, however, one caveat: You could also add a power booster to increase the 110 to 220.
@superspooky4580
@superspooky4580 8 ай бұрын
That is false, alternators put out 12 volts AC and the diodes and regulator keep it at 12 volts and convert it to dc. As a car engine spins faster the voltage produced will go up and you can have that in a car. with only 5 turns of wire normally The voltage can only be 12v's by putting more turns you capture more of the energy and increase the voltage to 120. Also the reason this is preferred to a transformer converting 12v ac to 120ac in the last big problem. FREQUENCY. the grid and most electronics need 60hz and a car alternator is a few thousand hz which for restive loads such as heaters and light bulbs in fine but for electronics and other applications is not fine

@@bigrenegade7121 thank you so much I'll have to get an old alternator from the junk yard and possibly connect it with a 12 volt battery powered motor or a bicycle wheel, with a motot connected to the axle, that might work.!! So I should bypass the diodes or disconnect them or maybe connect them by a separate wire to run the electric motor to run the bike wheel, anything to get the alternator putting out 120!

@jasonpeace91 Жыл бұрын
i know this is 6 months too late but here is how i would do it take a alternator remove the voltage rectifier and diode pack take each of the wire pairs (1 pair per phase) and record the voltage of each when spinning at the right speed to make 50hz (or 60hz depending where you are) with 8-10v at the brushes from a bench power supply to given you voltage X at the wire pairs (also record the rpm for the required frequency) take 120v divided by your voltage X to give you the amount you need to step up the voltage by put in a step up transformer of the correct ratio to get your 120v repeat for the other 2 phases do not join all the phases as shown in this video each set of 2 wires is a seperate phase and shouldn't be joined (would like to see the video setup on an osiliscope i doubt the ac is remotely clean) now set your drive motor to the required speed for your 50hz or 60hz and add your load (tools or lights) recording the voltage when the voltage drops you increase the voltage at the brushes to compensate ad bring the voltage back up (this will increase load on the drive motor so watch the rpm and hz as too much load will also cause it to drop) if you use all 3 phases (seperately) try and keep equal loads as when you adjust the voltage to the brushes for the lowest phase it will also increase the voltage on the other 2 phases the limiting factors for this setup is wire diameter (alternator and transformer) which will limit current, tell tale of overcurrent is getting hot drive motor hp - as the brush voltage is raised the magnetic forces increase creating more load to turn the alternator brush power supply voltage and current (as electrical loads increase you'll need more and more power at the brushes to maintain 120v ac)

The system is powered by a battery, which turns a DC motor which then turns the modified car alternator, to produce 120V AC (at 215Hz and unknown shape) but the power output has to be 80% x 80%, so maybe 65% of the battery output (off the top of my head)?
