Note that this isn't an in-depth tech review of the 2720. I'm not a tech channel and I don't think I would be able to cover this with the same detail a proper tech channel would! This is more my personal experiences of using this phone and how it fits with my current needs.

Your comment is useless. This guy is giving you the honest. This phone is expensive but it is way way too sluggish. I have been using phones from like black and white phone times, none of those phone were this sluggish. If you press number 4 two times, sometimes it will act as it has been pressed four times, sometimes as 3, sometimes as 2, 1 and sometimes it will act like it was not even pressed. Then you press the same key... Leave it can't even explain how slow kaios phone works. Kaios is the slowest and the most lagging os of all time

I dunno, I wouldn’t have minded any of the lack of features if it worked like a proper basic phone would (call and text), but KaiOS for this phone is so slow and buggy that reviving an old phone from the mid 2000s (assuming carriers would support it) would have been an improvement. If I didn’t have a job in tech operations it would’ve probably not mattered as much. Have you tried this phone in particular or anything from the Nokia KaiOS line?

@@PGBlanks I know I'm pretty late to the party, I had the same experience with a Nokia 8110 4G and the problem Is definitively KaiOS. Consider trying a Nokia 220 or 225 4G. They have the same basic functions but without the crappy OS. My 220 4G Is super fast, have a proper T9 and UX experience. Much Better than the 8110.

It's funny when you move to a dumbphone that all your friends say wtf, why, how, that's crazy etc. They literally stare at their phones every spare moment and waste hours of their time yet don't understand why anyone would not want to do that. It's incredible.

I wish someone would make a flip phone with a decent OS, maps, limited other apps, and a good camera. I wouldn't mind paying ~$200 or so, I just want to get away from the large full-touchscreen form factor and notifications, but I still want to be able to take decent pictures.

I am crazy for a flip phone,but we need better tech on them. I believe we don’t need to have that old keyboard on them. Something more modern like touch screen keyboard. Now what I really miss is the small size of the flip phones, and the way to open it to take a call, that it felt very cool.

Great video! You brought up some good points about minimalism. Although it may be counterintuitive to buy another device, another option that maybe serve you better is a Blackberry Classic. The keyboard is QWERTY of course, but you are more limited in the way of some apps, which may be a good thing. But those phones generally do all basic things well & have the ability to maybe run other, more essential apps better than the Nokia phone.

Sadly I hear blackberry is reaching end of life by early-2022, although I haven't figured out what that means if you're just using it as an offline-only device.

interesting life rhythm proposition, I just think that what you are missing and why the phone frustrates you is because you don't have a calm life rhythm, let yourself go, the world is not going to end if you don't write a message in less than 10 seconds, I think it is a characteristic that before was taken into account, I'm going to turn on the computer, it takes 5 minutes, then I go and make myself a coffee, or while I organize these files, not now, everything needs it already, I think it is the next step to have another rhythm of life.

Thank you for sharing your real life experiences of "Digital Detoxing." I remember texting on my bar phones, it would be frustrating to have to go back. I still travel with a rugged Samsung bar phone as a backup. I confess to spending too much time on my smartphone.

For me just straight up deleting social media has worked wonders. Now when I'm on my phone I try to do more value-adding things like watching longer form content or reading articles/ books.

I experienced the slowness as well. Its not like I have not used basic phones before but this kind of slowness are common on KaiOS phones. I used Jio Phone in past and its also slow compared to other basic phones. Hopefully KaiOS optimizes the operating system for higher speeds in future. The most annoying things are: 1. Slower Contacts loading and 2. pressing end call button instead of back button.

Alot of people are mad here They have to realize that first of all: 1. KaiOS' entire point is to let people with budget phones to connect to the internet for a cheap price, and it does that job poorly 2. If BASIC features like phone calls is going to be a slow and sluggish feature then what's the point, I could turn my own android phone into a dumb phone if I'd like 3. KaiOS phones don't really help with screen time, they have those social media apps that people want to STAY AWAY from

Yeah I am not sure if I wasn't clear enough in my vid that the problem is that KaiOS is a really bad implementation of a dumbphone. ANd it's annoying that the best reviewed dumbphone is the Lightphone which is the cost of a midrange smartphone :(

@@PGBlanks you were pretty clear about this in your video, while I did switch to a kaiOS phone back in December my thoughts are that it works fine but it can be very sluggish I still wouldn't recommend a light phone to anyone as it's basically an expensive brick, you can get more value with a Nokia S30+ phone or a cheap Android phone that's been debloated with only the necessary stuff I wouldn't recommend a kaios phone to people who are switching unless you're me and like to thinker and mod stuff lol

Thanks so much for the inspiration to go down on this journey! A shame it didn’t work for me this time, I think right now working in tech makes it too much of a barrier for me out of the box. But I feel if I have time I should definitely do bananahackers! It’s just unfortunate that the seemingly better performing dumbphones are so expensive!

@@PGBlanks I haven't had the chance to use one, thats y I'm looking for reviews. I'm into these old style phone's as I grew up using them also because I like the idea of being a minimalist. I was about to quit smart phones a few years back for the Nokia banana phone instead ended up getting two android phones. It's difficult to quit smart phones these days, but if it weren't for a decent camera which I often need, I'd have switched to Kai os already. Id have to add a camera to my devices list if I were to quit smart phone which would be further from being a minimalist. For now lemme just follow u and see how you do with Kai os phones. Thanks for your video I haven't found any other video where they showed how slow these phones can be.

I can understand why he decided to go back to his smartphone. I have a dumb flip phone and was wanting to get something with some "smarts." I looked at Android phones and was intimidated by their apparent complexity. Then, I looked at KaiOS phones as a potential alternative. Regrettably, KaiOS has done such a poor job at describing how it works and the available apps. I felt totally unsure as to just what is KaiOS. So, if and when I move from my dumb flip phone, it will be to an Android phone---at least there is a whole library of KZfaq videos on how to use it and most phone has a decent User's Manual.

Sadly, there's no such thing as a "perfect feature phone". But I discovered the Qin F21 Pro. It's a keypad phone with midrange smartphone specs, and it also won't allow you to download distracting apps easily.

You're right about this phone. It doesn't compare to the original. Too hard to answer calls, find contacts, text, compared to the 2009 Nokia 2720. Also, can't stand the loud power on jingle. And there is no "meeting profile" you can set. All you can do is lower the volume to vibrate, and then, you risk undoing it because the volume button is so easy to touch accidentally. I miss the original. :(

Yeah I got a lot of dislikes on this vid, I feel a lot of the negative comments aren't from people who actually used this phone haha. It's not that dumbphones are bad, but this one's basic phone functionalities are just not very well done :/

For sure! I'm a bit bummed that I didn't get to finish the whole 30 days but there were significant quality of life downgrades where I was just being inefficient. At least it got rid of my social media habit, I barely check social media anymore and whenever I do, it's just for a few minutes on my computer. I'm super behind on the news nowadays but maybe that's a blessing in disguise :D

I feel like if you used a different model of flipped phone you would have been satisfied. That model actually isnt the best. But yes, its pretty much hard when trying to use GPS.

excellent update!!! i decided to save my nokia feature phone $$ for the upcoming iphone SE Plus. besides the quirks on the amazon reviews and r/dumbphones, the series30+ and kaios nokia phones just lack the necessary 4g/LTE bands to be a truly "mobile" phone. the iphone is just a perfect communication device... basically all 4g/LTE bands AND you can talk/text/email/chat/videochat on all the popular personal/business multiplatform communications apps/programs. pixels would be my only android alternatives because i'm tired of and done with slow update rollouts to even the android one phones, but even then, there is that off chance that your group of friends will use facetime, you don't want to be the odd man out. also good luck with tethering an ipad or laptop to the nokia kaios phone for teams or zoom... i read there's a problem with intermittent disconnects on the hotspot feature. that's a deal breaker. and besides i just can't deal with delayed texts on tmobile usa's network. happens on all the android, old nokia series40 and lumia windows phones that i owned. even tested messages being made next to baffled family members. but the iphones, they just work. so keep your iphone for as long as it meets your needs or you want a newer version, you did good by just sheer willpower to delete and avoid the social media stuff.👍👍 now only if the ipad mini was bezel-less and a phone, i'd be really happy especially since there's a headphone jack.

Oh hello again! Yeah I'm honestly a bit disappointed with the execution of KaiOS so far. Maybe in a few years they'll be able to smoothen out the dumbphone experience, but for now it just feels like such a quality of life downgrade even with my lowered expectations. I haven't figured out what's supported now in Australia, actually. Maybe because of how backwards we are internet wise we're also backwards in disabling the old networks. Those old blackberries really caught my eye and if I can find one under $50 that can still work I might give it a shot lol. I've been watching a few stories of folks still on the original iPhone SE (that shell was so beautiful) and I think that could be a good alternative as well -- it does everything you want it to do but the screen is small enough that it might discourage overuse.

Me too actually. QWERTY is definitely more efficient and if you are just using it for SMS then it doesnt have any downsides IMO. Just not sure which BBs still work under our networks anymore!

I HATE THIS PHONE. I STILL HAVEN'T FIGURED OUT HOW TO GET THE CONTACTS I IMPORTED FROM MY OLD WHICH DOWNLOADED THEM TO "NOTIFICATIONS" WITH NO WAY TO MOVE THE FILES TO MY CONTACT LIST. PUT IT ACCESSIBILITY MODE TO MAKE FONTS LARGER AND VOLUME LOUDER BUT IT ISN'T ENOUGH TO MAKE IT USEFUL TO ME.

I bought the #Nokia 2720 flip. Nothing in this advertisement is there. Turns out we are being sold of the older models. Same exact look but no apps, no kai store and worse, no wifi connectivity. I've been duped!

I didn't try the Nokia 2720.. but I used the Alcatel go 3 and the gps was bad as well.. but the phone was reactive for other task and instead of writing my text I could just say it and it will write it for me. if it wasn't that I really need a gps because I still get lost in my town for now I would have keep it for a while.

Not healthy not to have a distinction. where I come from is she is always saying she can't get a hold of me so I told her I will make sure I have this one phone, charged with the ringer on, no matter what I decide to do to my other devices (custom ROMs etc)

I don't have a referral code or anything but Ting is a very simple wireless option. $10 for the basic unlimited calls and text and a gig of data or something like that. As easy as signing up for Gmail. And my Moto G7 plus has been more than adequate, at a very affordable price

I can't absolutely advise anyone to buy Nokia 2720 Flip. I am very much interested to use any Flip featured phone. When I saw it with impressive appearance, I quickly bought it (a bit expensive). But searching names in contacts needs you to type exactly the same flow as it was saved, if you would quickly search by typing any few texts of the name, you end up with no contact notification. But also if you ever scrolled the list to the middle you will never easily go back to the first name until you use many steps to reset or consume alot of time to scroll back again, KaIOS in those phone is a truly disaster. I was glad for it to be stolen as I got a good reason to keep search other type of Flip phone. I am in Tanzania but I have not found any good one yet.

@@PGBlanks haven't yet, but saw some reviews of the units exclusive to American market (8000 4g and 6300) being compared to a banana phone and 2720. The speed is significantly faster in the newer device. Maybe because the later is quad-core chipset, compared to this dual core

Apparently even the verizon 2720 runs better due to the lack of bloatware. Have you considered the alternative Android form factors like AGM phones or Unihertz Titan? Those seem like the best compromise for me rather than KaiOS’s sluggishness.

@@shubhamkhawla8974 Have you used this phone in particular? You'll be surprised at how bad and unresponsive KaiOS (and the 2720) is compared to old Nokias in real world use. Of course I've used old Nokia phones -- mostly the low/mid-range ones, too. I didn't get my first smartphone until 2012 or so. It wouldve been a better choice for me to just look for an old used Nokia phone from the early 2010s, actually. Yeah I think if I hold onto my iPhone for a few more years it will have lived up to its price tag. I use it to be more efficient for work, I use it to film this channel. I read books on it. It adds a lot of value! It's just a matter of maximising value on things that add value (utilities like maps, being able to google anything, QR codes, etc), not getting distracted by all the negative aspects of smartphones (social media, online shopping)

Used to use a kia os keypad phone a few years back and the only issue that I had with the phone was the sluggishness. Like you said with the contacts app, even I had to wait for a few seconds for the search option to pop up, the whatsapp didn't had the call feature. The best part was the app Store but the os sucked

I think the main problem is that this KaiOS version has smart features that don't really work that well, but because of that, it has a bit more unnecessary bloat than you would with a "dumber" phone. So either go full dumbphone and get ones with barely any internet features, or move up to an Android dumbphone (like the ones from AGM)

I’d be fine using a T9 keyboard. While I’ll lose the speed of typing on a qwerty keyboard, I’d experience the clicks of typing on a physical keyboard. What I was looking for in this video was the answer of “Does this phone work?” And all I got was mostly complaints. Although, I can’t really blame someone who isn’t really familiar with these types of phones. Many do still use even dumber phones. I would like to see a full on review about this phone. Answering the question “Would this work as an everyday phone?” I would assume “Yes.” It can connect to the internet, can makes phone calls, texts, and you can watch youtube on it. What’s more is that it can last for days. The only downside is that it’s overpriced and over valued. Nokia has no clue what the real value of these phones are. It is probably due to taxes but, would that really be a problem considering many other devices like “Blu” sell for a lower price? Nokia markets this phone as a “Detox” when, in reality, it’s a phone. I expect it to function like one. Don’t care if it makes things harder, if I can use it, I’d use it.

Thanks for your thoughts and I totally agree. What I wasn’t able to really make clear in this vid is that this phone is not great as a basic phone either. The alarms don’t work all the time (I’ve been late for work before!), battery life only lasts 1-2 days, no group text msgs, whatsapp notifs and msgs are delayed, etc I think you should try and look for a more basic phone than this without KaiOS, so maybe even the simpler Nokia phones (e.g. Nokia 225)

Yeah man KaiOS is a mess, Ive used 2 of them and they were pretty awful. They dont even have group SMS, like cmon? I am not a fan of KaiOS at alll. JAVA phones were where it was at, but they arent compatible with 4g sadly. I have been using and LG Exault 4g and it's an android AOSP for over a year now. Works flawlessly, and I can text pretty quickly. I just wish I could use scribd, but its not too bad. I do have a cheapo smartphone onstandby if I need it in an emergency but I rarely do. It's a glorified walkman at this point lol.

I feel you, the execution of KaiOS is really disappointing. I think if they just did everything they were supposed to do smoothly, I wouldn't have a problem. Hopefully KaiOS 3 would be better (but unfortunately I don't think this would update).

Hi, they are completely different phones, the 2720 is a rebrand of an older 2720 from a decade ago, they just reused the name for nostalgia purposes.

except the smartphone is the devil 5:18 if not the iOS and android wont be having those screentime feature where you can set the screentime for yourself... ofcourse its not the smartphone itself but the way that the UX is designed...flashy visuals,alert notification reminder...they all are going in one way to build ourself into the habits of staying on the app or the phone.... simple example is whatsapp, it used to never have status but why is it there...to make people open up whatsapp more... For YOU if you were never wired into this habit, its not a problem... you will just say oh just dont open the Status feature... this is just one example... but I do understand your concern... but then again these new kaios phone were never invented for us minimalist... I understand that there are parts of a phone that could have been better without hindering our mission for digital detox.... for example the camera quality, maps useability speed etc... but certainly these KaiOS phones now are much better tho than if you were to use the old feature phone flip phone... they have 4G,Whatsapp!! etc

I'm using this since December 2019 ... it is a bit slow but it is fine . Last week the volume up button started to malfunction 🥲. Alcatel go flip 4 is a better option I think

I still use an old fashioned flip phone. Its about half that size and all it really does is call and text. As for all that other crap that people need smart phones for (like commenting on youtube videos) I'm using a small samsung tablet, big enough to read on and use maps and videos, small enough to fit in the back pocket of my 501s. This is the perfect setup. Smart phones are too big for a phone and too small for everything else. This Nokia is a nice idea, but its still too big.

Ey there! Thanks for sharing your experience and congratulations for your smartphone detox challenge! I tried to use the Nokia 2720 and yeah, it is a pain in the butt, it is soooooo slow and I only wanted it to make calls and receive SMS... even at factory reset, it is terrible. So I am trying with a Motorola Razr V3xx which is 3G, I still have a smartphone because of my job, but it goes in my backpack and not in my jeans. It is amazing that a 16 year old phone performs much, much better than the "brand new" 2720 flip. I hope my 2 cents help for something, bro!

You missed the point on quitting the flip phone. I have a Kyocera Dura Xe for just talk and text. I have a tablet for ditections if I get lost. Flip phone is safer and better for people who don't care about a smart phone Like me.

I think the “point” to be missed differs from person to person. Is it better or worse to have a separate device? One can argue that a part of minimalism is about doing more with less, which doesn’t make smartphones inherently bad. Is there a world where you can get all the utilitarian benefits of a smartphone (camera, navigation, useful info at your fingertips) but not the addictive side (social media, games)? That’s what I’m trying to balance right now.

That phone sucks.Even the alarm clock won't work because the time freezes when the display is off!So when you wake the phone hours later the time refreshes and the alarm goes off.Crappy Camera,crappy display viewing angles.too cheaply made for the price and year of manufacture!
