I Used Loop to Hack My Insulin Pump

The Loop automated insulin delivery system, developed by the community of hackers #WeAreNotWaiting, offers more flexibility and control than FDA-approved systems on the market. I’ve been using it for over six months -- and I’m not looking back.
*This video is not medical advice. Loop is highly experimental and not approved by the FDA to treat diabetes. Users take full responsibility for building and running it at their own risk.*

This video omits an important player in the creation of Loop, Ben West. He decoded the communication protocol that allowed the DIY movement of looping to start, and wrote much of OpenAPS.

My son just started Omnipod 5 two weeks ago. He has used a version of Omnipod for 5.5 years. He started 6 months after diagnosis. We love Omnipod 5 but Loop is amazing. It can do so many much more. He needs the "control" the loop system would give him. Thank you for sharing. Also I am so glad that you were able to get the correct diagnosis. So many adults are misdiagnosed as T2D. Again thank you for sharing

I've also been looping for years using AndroidAPS. It's changed my life entirely for the better. My A1c has never been better and I almost never have dangerous lows anymore. The looping systems are incredibly effective, and best of all I can go hours without thinking about my diabetes at all. The long-haulers know just how exhausting management can be, and AndroidAPS has taken so much of that burden off my shoulders. Thanks for making this video and spreading the word!

This is a wonderful video. I’ve had type 1 for 40+ years and have seen almost no improvement in the way I care for myself. There’s been no new medications except for the transition from animal to human insulins and the transition to the new ultra-fast and ultra-slow acting insulins. Why would companies be motivated to progress the tech with all the money to be made? Companies are a living financial entity which die without income. Will our politicians encourage a different path? No. Loop could be the first real improvement. Sad situation.

Great video and a good summary of how Loop and DIY looping can help. There are always ups and downs, and its not for everyone as its requires a high technology awareness, but for me it beats any of the off-the-shelf technologies currently available to me. Been using AndroidAPS for 8 months now, and love how much less time of T1 awareness it takes to live each day. I've been T1 for 49 years now and AAPS is a huge leap forward in lifestyle for me, currently 96% TIR and working on the last 4.....

Really awesome that they started the movement to improve insulin pump technology but the big companies have taken their ideas and made them into working, FDA approved devices. Tandem pumps with control iq does the amount of this stuff that matters and Omnipod 5 algorithm is on the way. Tandem has thousands of users data too. Even though that is mentioned in the video it’s not enough to make me feel like they are promoting the safer options.

The commercial options are great and I'm excited for more people to get access to them. However, the open-source options are years ahead of any of these companies in terms of their ability to issue corrections and handle changes with minimal input from the user. If there are people who are willing to look beyond what's available off the shelf, I think the open-source community has a lot to offer.

the project sounds great and has so much hard work from everyone, but i'm always worried about the security of these devices.. ultimately they all connect to a cell phone that has constant access to the internet.. is taking control out of the users hands good if it leaves the an opening for someone else to get in?

The thing that really really sucks about being a type one is we are forced to use systems and technology that is years and decades old to LIVE normalish lives. I’m in my late 30s and have had diabetes since I was 2. I have seen growth in diabetes tech. 15 years ago. That’s about the time pumps started showing up regularly. But my first pump, was still my favorite. It had a blood tester attachment. I could plug my numbers directly to it! That was back in 2007. Medtronic has their guardian system, but that thing is a train wreck compared to the Dexcom and the libre. And I still had to jump through hoops to make the damned thing work. I have other issues that my diabetes has caused and most of it may have been partially negated if companies had sunk more time and effort to make life better for diabetics rather than just making us poorer.

Sorry if this isn't related. I'm only 13 but im the type of person to worry about everything. My diabetes had been pretty out of control for 3 years 2019-2022 but its better now. I'm worried if I'll ever get complications later in life and if that will reduce my life expectancy. Have you shown any signs of complications or do you have tips how to lower blood sugar? Sorry if it seems random im asking a sttanger on KZfaq I don't really have anyone to talk to about this :(

@profgj-prof7211 10 ай бұрын
@Cindysvibes9895 Have you considered eating low carb? Teens tend to be insulin resistant meaning that you have to take more insulin to bring down your blood sugar than you did before adolescence and than what you will need by the time you reach your 20s. Ask your doctor if Metformin could help with this temporary insulin resistance. And no, you do NOT have to get complications if you log your foods (with this Loop app or Fitness Pal or Lose It!) and dose your insulin appropriately for the carbs (and for the proteins, too, if you are low carbing. Your doctor can explain that.) There are so many tasty low carb substitutions now for sweet treats that you really don’t have to miss out. You and your friends can learn to make them with almond or coconut flour and allulose and/or stevia to sweeten them. And find an exercise that you enjoy and will stick with into adulthood. So many of us long-term Type 1s end up with insulin resistance in adulthood when we gain weight and we have to work hard to lose the weight and the insulin resistance. But if you maintain a healthy weight, keep exercising (even walking 20 min every night after dinner is a great thing to do for your blood sugar), and get enough sleep throughout your life, you should be able to enjoy a long and healthy life without complications. 😊 (I’ve been T1D for 38 yrs and so far no complications other than insulin resistance that I have finally managed to overcome through weight loss and normal BGs by low carbing. Even my ophthalmologist said he wouldn’t know I was diabetic if he hadn’t seen it in my chart because I have never had diabetic retinopathy. And my BGs were horrible in my teen years. 40s-300s mg/dL. 😢)

However there are more and more people being diagnosed type 1, like the person in this video who was diagnosed at 30 and i've also met people who were diagnosed type 1 at 47 years old. I doubt they were diabetic their entire life and just didn't know it. So, what is being put in our food that is killing off peoples pancreas'????

I've been looping for years. The risks are there, but they're also still there (and often worse) with commercial pumps and manual insulin injections. The more people who get exposed to this, the better the community as a whole will do in my opinion. Mainstream recognition could also lead to FDA approval of these looping algorithms, which are moving much faster and delivering better results than most hopsital-based research operations.

Here's medical advice: Don't do this. One mistake and you're dead. If you are sleeping and your "hacking" gives you too much insulin... well, that's that. I'm a T1 x 30 years. I'm also an NP and a diabetes educator. Let the flames begin...

all of these systems (Loop, AndroidAPS, OpenAPS) have set insulin constraints and predictions that make it so that regardless of any insulin given, it can always back out of the treatment decision. Granted, it is entirely up to the user to set these things like with normal diabetes management. A lot of work by the community and thousands of man hours have been put in the creation of these systems to ensure safety. I would even go as far to say that these systems are safer than manual treatment. For example, OpenAPS and AndroidAPS have a feature known as Autosens. Autosens calculates your sensitivity to insulin based on blood glucose deviations per insulin given. Insulin resistance is varied day to day and Autosens has saved me from random hypos and even high resistance days.
@evansayles1836
@evansayles1836 2 жыл бұрын
Read the documentation for these open-source projects. They are designed to be safer than injections or un-looped pumps, with redundant safeguards to prevent insulin overdosing. I use AndroidAPS and I've had a low blood sugar less than 1% of the time in the last week: significantly better than when I was manually bolusing and changing basal rates.
@russellseaton2014

These Loop systems are simply copies or predecessors of the hybrid insulin pumps currently on the market. Such as Medtronic 670/770 and Tslim and the new Omnipod 5. None of them are foolproof. You can kill yourself with any of them. You can make mistakes with all of them, including the Loop method. But the Loop system seems to allow more options for independent control of the parameters. Such as setting a lower target blood sugar of 100. None of the official pumps allow that low of a target. Good and bad with all of them. But it really depends on how the user manages the system.

For me the leap in tech means more safety rather than less - 49 years as a T1 and pretty well controlled through all of that. Even having alarms on my watch when I drop low means no-matter what happens in nighttime low BG I'm woken up before I get dangerously low. AAPS has meant I have a constant nighttime BG and don't fear sleeping (like I did on MDI when I had life events hitting high stress levels etc). My watch now stays quiet and I have glucose tablets in my pocket that are going out of date..... DIY looping is for those of us who are technically switched on enough to understand it, and accept their own risks. The FDA approved systems are available and are regulated but not as advanced, plus will be outside the financial capabilities of lots of people. The benefit of Loop and AAPS is that they drive innovation in the commercial products which benefits everyone that gets stuck with Type-1 life

Hey Dude. First of all i would like to give you my props for that video from a technical Viewpoint. Very well made. Good Visuals. Good on Cam Performance. In short great Production Value. But !! I believe you are promoting the wrong message. I started Looping back in the days around 2016. I had the same level of enthusiasm about that stuff as you are now. And that is absolutly fine. I was diagnosed in 2008 with age of 37. It took me years to learn about my diabetes and how to deal with it utilizing the available Tools and treatments. In 2016 i discovered the benefits of looping and (as is said) was blown away. So far so good. Dont get me wrong. Your diagnosis is not so long ago. Almost one year ago. Do you really think its a good thing to promote Looping to potentional "newbies" while being a Newbie by your self ? "I hacked my Insulin Pump". Sorry No you dont. You just copied & pasted some work that other great Folks from our Community were great enough to share. And so did i back in the days. Long story short. In my opinion your video sells the message: Hack your Pump and your T1D runs on Autopilot. And that is for me more than risky. Because it isnt that easy. Sure you can get into looping very easy. There is al lot of help on the webs that will guide you there. But guess what. Using Loop and other DIY Systems is still a risk that you take for yourself. No matter how well those System are performing. In the end of the Day you are responsible for what your are doing. When my Loop fails or stops working for whatever Reason i know how can handle my T1D manually. Because i was used to do it for years. And i assume (dont take it personally) after one year of living with T1D your not at this stage. Maybe im wrong. I hope you get my points.

Fair comment, i totally understand and look you’re right, from a diabetic point of view and 25 y of living with it, if you’re a newbie you absolutely need to understand how it works and BE IN CONTROL if something unexpected happens… but i guess when you lived your life almost normally for the past 30 y is difficult to don’t try to have the simplicity back as fast as possible

Fellow T1D here. As good as those new gadgets get, the very best hack still is managing your diet. I can recommend the ketogenic diet 100%, it helped me get my hba1c below 6.0!

I keep telling my wife (20+ years T1D) to try keto/carnivore, but she just says "well what if I get low?". Maybe the combo of a closed loop system and a zero/low carb diet would be the key.

@@warrenandliane Well you can still use dextrose if you are low. Once you are back on track you can return to the diet. But i promise you she wont get as many lows, because her bloodglucose levels will be much stable. At least that is what happened to me :)

Youre not a type 1, you have LADA

LADA is 1.5 which is basically 1.

@@Justin_tech 1.5 is bs from dumb MDs who say diabetes is a "spectrum". But yes LADA is almost T1. T1 = autoimmune T2 = sugar overloading the body thru poor diet and activity levels

Did you have covid? If yes, did you get T1 after? Is Loop > AndriodAPS?

Loop is a different product to AndroidAPS - they both use similar algorithms but have different options and ways of working. Loop is iPhone and AndroidAPS is android, but the differences are deeper than phone type - its whichever one works best for you (or whatever phone you have to start with)

I had covid back in Nov 2021 and was diagnosed T1 in Feb of 2022 at age 26. I think it was covid that triggered the immune response.
