Oh darn! Although I'm happy that you've found a good home for Honey, I will miss her. I wish I would have had a place to keep her, I would have bought her! She's just gorgeous! She would have been a good project for me to train and a good size for my 65 year old body to get on. She's just beautiful and you sure did a great job getting her healthy again. I hope her new owners will do her right and love her well. Thanks for what you did for her.

Hi, Allen! Idea that might help remind you to turn off water... Cog Hill Farm KZfaq channel uses it. Mrs Cog Hill bought some elastic wrist bands and put one on each water spout. When Jason turns the water on, he puts the band on his wrist then goes on to do other chores. The band reminds him to turn off the water at which time he returns the band to the faucet. May save you some water. Blessings from northern Illinois.

Cowboy is the SILVER to Gold 66, lol~hey, it's okay by me gelding Mr. Gold 66. At least he got to attain stallion status with 2 offspring. It's all good. He'll make someone a great ranch or roping horse....whatever he's talented at. I think this is a great outcome for Honey! She'll get some training and move forward in her life. We'll miss seeing her, but the updates will be cool!

Do what you need to do and that makes sense for not only the horses’ wellbeing but also yours as well. It is understandable that you need to make changes and some decisions so that the horses get what they need and so do you and your family as well. Things change as we get older and in life circumstances. I wish you peace and blessings as you transition to a lifestyle where you can enjoy your time and relax with less pressure and demands.

As somebody that knows nothing about horses, I learnt something about bloodlines , temperament and confirmation through the farm on route 66 . Reconsider keeping nugget. She can carry on chipper,s bloodlines.......your best horse. Is that not the goal. If you are worried about colour.....she will give you colour in the future. However colour cannot replace temperament and confirmation . Something I also learnt on this channel. You mentioned many times regretting selling certain horses...especially your fillies . Here is a chance to prevent a regret. The next generation will need foundational stock!

For some reason, I knew you wouldn't keep either palomino and you would geld Gold 66. It seems you are crazy about them for a season and then turn them over. You're a lot tougher than me. You let them grow to have more chances to become better horses even if it hurts to see them move on.

It is kind of sad about Gold 66 but if nobody wants to breed to him then this is a good choice. As a stallion he can't be handled and ridden as much, and he will now be able to be trained for use or sport, as you say.

You are doing the right thing. Gold 66 is a pretty boy but he's not of the same caliber as 66. You are not a breeding farm even though you have Nugget and Lex and some youngsters coming up. Gold 66 has the athleticism to make it in whatever direction anyone would want to go as an outstanding gelding. You have Nugget and you'll have whatever Lex has to breed to 66 for a nice cross. And hay being so expensive, you really don't need too many keepers. It's not like you can put them off for another day as they need daily care plus I'm sure you do things at home besides taking care of animals. Everyone has different priorities. You do what is comfortable for you and your family. With Marine leaving, Charlotte will be left alone unless someone else can ride her. With all the jumping she's been doing, and the rides put on her has made her a viable prospect for someone else unless you end up keeping her for a while. At any rate, unless someone walks in your shoes so-to-speak, there will always be negative comments but I'm sure there are more positives than negatives. Take care and the best to you and yours!

Good decisions on both. Having a stallion among so many mares is a pain in the butt, and without any showing, it would be difficult to attract broodmares, especially in your area where there are so many studs with show points. Same with Honey, she needs constant work and you just don't have the time/help. Horses are supposed to be fun. Enjoy the rest of the herd!

Alan, gelding Gold 66 was a tough decision, but with the current situation at your farm, it’s a great decision….both for him and you. Stallions and the extra care and penning they take is difficult if you’re there 24/7. But holding a full time job elsewhere and not having the extra time stallions require, it’s a great decision. The relationship you’ve built with Martins Quarterhorses lets you breed mares to their stallions when you want quality foals. And you still have 66 at Martins now. Gold 66 will make a great horse for someone! But in my opinion, this is good for all concerned. Rescue is one of your best areas. You’ve done some real magic and wonders with past ponies, and with just you bearing most of the farm responsibilities now, maybe that’s a passion you want to pursue? Fun to see what’s coming! Thanks for sharing. ❤❤❤

Everyone is asking where Gold 66 is going. I must have missed something as I did not hear you say he was going anywhere/or up for sale. I don't know much anymore about quarter horse bloodlines, but there are TONS of excellent lines out there and on top of that, I truly do believe that quarter horses are being over bred . There are always quarter horses at auctions that were a roping or a barrel or whatever and they get used hard and usually have to retire fairly young as they have injuries from those sports. The problem with over breeding ANY type of horses is that the auctions are full of the cast offs, the injured and guess what happens to them, they end up in the slaughter pipeline which is one of the most horrific stories about any animals short of the horrible dog fighting idiots, these horses literally go through horrible trauma, they get hauled all over by traders to these auctions, they pick up all sorts of diseases at these auctions, the traders do not feed them well no care about their injuries however painful they may be, and in the end they go on the death transports, packed in like sardines, the weaker ones fall and are trampled by the others, if they don't die from the tampling they certainly get horrific injuries and are in pain for days and these transports are even worse than the traders, the kill buyers have NO should no Morals, not an ethical bone in their greedy bodies and when a GREAT many of the horses arrive at the Mexican and Canadian kill houses, the stuff that goes on in them is so atrocious it is off the charts. The way they kill them is meant for cattle and the macabre tool they use to kill with often takes not one not two not three but up to TEN knocks to their skull to finally kill them. There is a documentary on U tube right now that only barely touches the awful awful things happening to horses. Stop breeding, slow things down as the culture of cowboys is slowly wanting and many people can no longer afford to keep a horse as a family pet or for trail riding. Dogs are in danger as well but at least they are put to sleep in a painless way, the way the horses that go to slaughter suffer in so many ways right up to the last knock in the head is proof that humans are just horrible, doing anything for money. God gave the animals to man to enhance our lives whether raised to eat, or not. Those who can torture horses for the money are beyond despicable and I hope I get a ringside seat at God's judgement of these evil people. ONLY THE MOST perfectly bred male horses should be kept intact and even now in the world of high tech their sperm can be taken and frozen and then the horse can be gelded and enjoy his life more while his great genetics are still passed on. I am not mad you gelded Gold 66 and even if you sell him on you still have to do what is best for your family and finances .I am sure if you are selling him that you will be very sure he goes to a good home.

By any chance have you ever heard from folks that got Skunk ? I followed them for awhile but not seeing anything from them in a long time. Lakes in the woods. They had moved down south from Michigan. The last I heard they lost their old mare. Very sad. But the new property they bought was really nice and making a nice homestead. He got sick during COVID, so I'm wondering if that had anything to do with their absences from KZfaq.

Being in Texas the idea of ice now is really weird. I think you’re doing the right thing for yourself and the horses. Taking care of animals is daily hard work and money. If you overextend your time energy and money can destroy the joy you have doing it now. Also horses are happier when they have a purpose challenges and human interaction. Like people they like to have value which comes from work. Growing old really puts the brakes on the energy levels etc doesn’t it. That’s ok. It’s your just moving into a new phase of your life. Enjoy it

My main disappointment in gelding 66 is that palomino horses cost more then sorrels/chestnuts or bays. And even greys and blacks whether they are breeding, show or pleasure horses. As kids we dreamed of owning a palomino, buckskin, paint or even a grey horse, no matter it's breed. But palominos and buckskins were very hard to find to buy at a reasonable price for a pleasure horse. Actually where I lived in Colorado it was impossible. I know breeders of these colors want to make them costlier to sell so keep their numbers lower then higher. But just imagine if at least 40% of all riding horses were always palominos, buckskins and nice greys, especially more dapple colored ones . Now palominos and buckskins combined only probably make 10% or less of colored riding horses an average person can afford. Actually average people can never afford them obviously because of higher prices but also because of availability. 90% of horses, general pleasure ones are only bays and sorrels, no matter the breed where I live at. 66 could of produced amazingly beautiful palominos that some persons or kids would of loved to of had owned in their lifetime.
