Finding leverless shortcuts is always a "OH MY GOD OF COURSE" moment. Like, we all understand SOCD to an extent but using that to our advantage and creating a shortcut is a talent few people have. It's always eye opening to see an input be simplified on leverless.

6:35, everyone shares tendons between your middle, ring, and pinky fingers (especially the last two). I'm sure it varies somewhat, but in learning piano and percussion I've done a lot of work on finger independence, which is to say you can train this to improve it. here's an exercise you'd do on the piano, but you can just tap a desk or something: tap all five fingers on the desk, then, holding your thumb down, tap the desk with your 4 other fingers. after that, tap with all your fingers but hold down your index finger this time. Cycle through all your fingers on each hand like this. It might help to do this on a leverless just for the feedback, but this is sorta the time proven practice.
@snizzle6174

footnote: My experience with this isn't really a good anecdote for it's effectiveness, since I also have spent my entire life playing music and effectively training this. You also need to be careful and pay attention to what you're feeling in your hand to make sure you aren't hurting anything.

The socd jump DP input was pretty busted in SFV. I remember when the SF6 beta came out that Capcom removed it, which kinda made sense to me... then the CPT announcement literally undid the change they made to remove it, which brought it back. If you're not a charge player, the SOCD = neutral was a straight buff for leverless players. Down Down inputs are easier now as well.

I have the Razr Kitsune too and coming from a background of playing musical instruments (guitar, bass, keyboards), the convention of playing with the hitbox on the lap will DESTROY the wrists over time (esp the left wrist). For injury prevention it is best to place the hitbox on a desk like a keyboard, with a wrist rest. By elevating the palm of the wrist that tricky ring / middle finger DP is easier. This is how pianists optimize wrist angles for max finger dexterity. Hope this helps!

I’ve been playing on leverless for 2 years. It’s certainly a *huge* learning curve to switch from a controller layout to needing buttons for movement, but it is just as rewarding as it is difficult. Consistent 360s, instant dragon punch, blocking is as easy as the press of a button (fuck you mortal kombat), and in my opinion, the best thing about the leverless is the fact that you aren’t using a stick, which means that to go from left to right or up to down, you have to go through the neutral position on the joystick first. This is not the case for leverless, you can basically instantly go from opposite directions with ease. I never bothered to learn shortcuts, I just practiced the input countless times and got the timing down. Now I can throw out inputs so quickly that I don’t even need to go through any delay. It just comes out as fast as I press the button, which now feels pretty damn fast, definitely not anything I could do on a controller, at least not as easily. Without a doubt, leverless is easily, downright the most powerful, and in my case, satisfying controller to use in competitive play. If you’re willing to put in the month or two to learn this controller, it is worth your time.

The SOCD discussion before SF6 was less theorycraft (only really about the game's input parser) and more memory. All of the shit you can do with down+up=neutral is why down+up=up was made the standard in the first place all those years ago. This tech isn't being discovered so much as remembered. What's old is new again

This is my first fighting game and I use leverless. I'm pretty bad at the game but already knew this stuff. I don't use my right hand for jump though but always knew it was an option. Probably having played passed games with different SOCD rules made this less intuitive for you. Here's another trick: The game priorities DP motions over quarter circles. Sometimes if you're walking forward then try to do a quarter circle you'll notice you get a DP, this can be annoying but you can use it to your advantage: Cancelling a DP motion into a Super can be very hard, especially if you do it raw. Some optimal combos like Ryu require you to be able to do this. (Light shoryu into level 3, so DP then double quarter circle). A trick is to walk forward then do a quarter circle then hit (gives you DP since you were walking forward) then do another quarter circle then hit (it still has the first quarter circle in your buffer). It makes stuff like this 100 times easier.

If you roll your fingers (like you're bored/impatiently waiting) on a table, the finger you start with represents the strength of your tendons. I always start with my pinky then roll inwards towards my pointer finger. She always starts with her pointer finger then rolls out towards her pinky. To get better at hitbox I've been training myself to roll her fingers like she does and it helps. My forearm hurts after a few minutes because i'm using muscles I wouldn't normally.

Feels like the primary advantage of leverless will always be exploiting SOCD cleaning, which seems like an artificial advantage that's always going to be subject to the whims of the devs, game-by-game. I think "last input override" (Gafrobox style) eliminates nearly all of the cleaning exploits I'm familiar with (as most take advantage of forced neutral), but ultimately it will come down to how each game's devs implement input detection. The "639" SOCD DP shouldn't even work - the input interpreter sees 636 which "shouldn't" be a valid DP input, as you never hit 2 - but Capcom's decision to accept 636 as a valid DP input makes it work.

@@trevorbiggin1771 True SF5-style 639 isn't a valid DP input for SF6, which you can see if you use a hitbox with the old d+u=u SOCD cleaning. However, due to the CPT required changes to SOCD cleaning, the SF5 "639 DP" input - hold f, hold f+d, hold f+d+u+P - is now interpreted as 636, which does work in SF6. So ironically, the SOCD rule change *preserved* the functionality of this input shortcut.

I find it so interesting when someone uses their right thumb to press the up button on leverless. That would require a lot of rewiring for me, as it seems more intuitive to do all the movement related stuff with my left hand, so jumping with the left thumb as well - probably coming from years playing FPS games and jumping by pressing space bar on the keyboard.

If you’re coming from FPS games you would love the ODIN V2. It replaces your lever with arrow keys similar to WASD. Not nearly as taxing on the wrists either.

I was in the same camp until I learned charge characters on a hitbox, so I had to press jump and an attack button at the same time. For me, it made more sense to hit them both with the same hand, and now I naturally jump with my right thumb.

This is faster. Especially the P2 side version compared to the tap-tap method. Give it some practice! I used your method, too, but this was an instant conversion after 5 min labbing.

The "finger not moving" thing is a little bit more complex 1- The middle finger and ring finger DO share something, so if you move one it will move the other; However 2- If you are a musician or trained any instrument for a time, You get rid of it. You can train the autonomy of each finger. What's the complexity in this? This is a muscle and nervous adaptation; It will take as long as it needs to in order you to be able to control each finger with finger control exercices of any instrument. Maybe 1 to 1/5 Years for it do develop

The other reason that the middle and ring can be hard to control, your index and thumb have their own dedicated neural pathway. Your middle, ring, and pinky finger all share a single pathway, making those three fingers hard to control independently.

I got a Razer Kitsune at a Microcenter a little over 2 weeks ago and i refunded it recently, its a good option to try it out if you’re not sure about it. They sell a few sticks but the best one is that horrid Mad Catz made in Japan. I’ll just play on pad until i can buy a stick that isn’t 300+ and has a way of accessing the cable without unscrewing or opening it. I haven’t played stick since SFIV (pretty much skipped V) so i’m in no rush.

@@MysticMayne I play stick and pad just depending on my mood and character but leverless you can get such instant inputs. I don’t have a problem doing any combos at all. It’s more for the instant upper cuts and reaction stuff that seems to give a unfair advantage. I think there is a clear advantage if you put in the time and effort. I know you can climb with pad but once you start getting to these higher ranks those small advantages make a difference.
