Episode seven in this series sees us looking at another 16mm scale model, specifically a Motor Rail Ltd. 20/28hp Simplex locomotive. The model is based around a kit from P.S Models: philsharples.com/shop/ols/pro...
As I mentioned in the video I'm happy to make the parts I designed available to other modellers. If you are interested in any of the parts I discuss in this (or any other of my videos) please use this Google Form to get in touch: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FA...
Parts I bought in to add to the model included:
- Steel Wheels: www.ipenginnering.com/product...
- Delrin chain and gears: www.motionco.co.uk/chain-spro...
- Christopher Clueless: www.ipenginnering.com/product...
- Loco Remote: www.locoremote.co.uk/
The black paint I used for the areas that are holes on the prototype was by Stuart Semple and is called Black 2.0: culturehustle.com/collections...
If you want to see how Dan Foard used the radiator I designed in his Simplex model have a look at Garden Rail from October 2022: www.world-of-railways.co.uk/w...
When building and detailing a model such as this one it is really helpful to have lots of prototype information to refer to. In this case I can recommend the following three books (all by Alan Keef) as they provide a wealth of drawings and photos of Simplex locos:
- Motor Rail Ltd: amzn.to/3JXWXEt
- Motor Rail Catalogues: amzn.to/3nrpPxi
- Simplex Locomotives at Work: amzn.to/3TYFLDn

I love the driver figure, im building a PS diesel box cab but with narrowed chassis rails and outside link rods rather than chain drive, i went for the diesel box cab for the extra room inside for radio gear and possibly a sound system and maybe even smoke generator, i hear hes doing a belt drive chassis soon, there amazing for the price of them really.

That sounds like an interesting build. I've not seen a price for his belt drive chassis yet but I assume they'll be cracking value like the other models. My only concern, from looking at a couple of product photos, is that there will be no way to change the belt. So if it snaps or gives over time you'll lose the 4 wheel drive. I guess that's less likely to be a problem in this scale than the smaller scales (belts in OO9 can be a problem over time) but it is one of the reasons I liked the use of a chain as it can be replaced or tweaked if necessary.

@@encoffeedrinker it's not available yet, he mentioned it through email while I told him my plans of doing a link rod conversion on the boxcab to which he sent the extra parts free of charge, I'd assume ittl be a toothed belt, the only way it could be changed once built would be to have slotted gaps for the wheel bearings instead of holes and some sort of printed C channel that can be screwed to the bottom of the chassis to hold them into place meaning the complete wheel set is removable

@@adamswindells1 the photos I've seen suggest two plastic pulleys and a smooth belt with no obvious way of replacing it, but I guess we'll need to see once it's actually available

@@encoffeedrinker I'd rather just use gears than a belt, I was thinking of using differential gears from a small rc truck and a drive shaft, I may try and design and print own chassis at some point with an under frame horizontal motor with dual shafts if I can find one the right size or fit a horizontal motor infront/behind the axle instead of between the axles and a counterweight at the other end and run a shaft and gear setup from a WPL rc truck or somthing I'm not sure yet, I need to get my printer setup again and find my laptop to design again

Yes, when I was editing the video I realised I should possibly have mentioned your models as I had some great pictures I could have used. Glad you like the parts anyway.

Do you know the exact gears you used for the wheel chain drive?
@encoffeedrinker
@encoffeedrinker Жыл бұрын
Yes, I used the 12 tooth gears from MOTIONCO. Specifically part number SP122: www.motionco.co.uk/light-power-sprocket-bore-p-32.html Note that these are the 1/8" bore to match the steel wheels I used from IP Engineering. I think the plastic wheels that came with the original kit are on 3mm axles so you'd want the 12 tooth gear with a 3mm bore, which I believe is part number SP12-3M: www.motionco.co.uk/light-power-sprocket-bore-p-393.html I used their matching chain, although I can't remember exactly how many links I needed, and it's tricky to count with out taking it off, sorry. You can find the chain here: www.motionco.co.uk/light-power-chain-p-63.html Hope that helps, Mark

I enjoyed the video and am interested in buying some if not all of the parts you mention however although you say there is a list in the description I cannot find either it or your contact details. How or where can I get these please.

Hi Paul, glad you liked the video. Not sure what's going on with the video description, but in theory there should be this link to this Google form where you can contact me to ask about parts etc.: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdeDr5L_ot3iZXwCBlL4GHUmpzvxSyf0OzigW4lqmF2N69D9Q/viewform?usp=share_link If that doesn't work for some reason feel free to DM me on Twitter if that's easier: twitter.com/encoffeedrinker

This is a hobby i have had to drop due to Brexit it has simply become to expensive and difficult to buy sm32/sm45 models/rails

I know what you mean. Certainly RTR stuff in these scales is well outside my price range now. You can get away with cheaper alternatives if you like the modelling side and making the extra details. As well as the PS Models kits (which are great value for money) I've got some laser cut 32mm track from IP Engineering which works great for seeing something run. Also Locoremote do a range of 32mm and 45mm 3D printed track. The files are available free to print yourself or they will print sets for you at a very reasonable price: www.locoremote.co.uk/3dprints.html

Would be handy if you publicised your brexit problems a bit more. There’s still a huge level of unwillingness to accept that brexit was a huge mistake. It’s just a massive piece of self harm that will set the country back a generation.
