Honestly one of the things that starts becoming clearer once you actually try transitioning to dumber phones is not that it requires discipline, but it requires having a strategy that allows you to end up with a larger net-positive having made the switch instead of having made too many compromises. That's why for people who are 'chronically' stuck to their phones, it's just not going to be a sustainable approach to just rely on 'discipline' and one's hopes and dreams that they'll stop being addicted as long as they meditate or some stuff, like some other people who haven't seriously tried transitioning say. Ultimately the people who find the most success from transitioning away from a smartphone are those who can make easy substitutions to smartphone features, all the while they're able to fully extract the benefits of not being exposed minute-by-minute to smartphone-catered environments. It's honestly very easy to make the switch as long as you don't make too many hasty compromises. Those who fail to transition to dumbphones for the long-term are likely people who just need something a lot more smartphone-like (such as android-equipped flip phones instead of just normal dumbphones), or are just in circumstances where they can't make proper substitutions.

Huge respect for having the self discipline to follow through with this in the long term. Using a bunch of digital productivity tools makes removing a phone from my life entirely probably net bad, but this video has prompted me to think a bit more critically about whether the technology I'm using is actually improving my life or not! Just deleting social media is something I have found to be a good 80/20 solution in the past.

Great idea but sadly this won't work if you're working in Malaysia where majority of workplace communication takes place within group chats with bosses and clients. But there are some apps that helps to limit your daily social media usage. I should try looking up those xD

I've literally thought of doing this myself for YEARS now so maybe this is the motivation I need to do it? I JUST missed the flip-phone and slide phones(?) but I always found them practical for the teens and adults I saw as a kid. Will update if I end up doing it.

I'm going to do this when I live in a better environment that is nice to spend time in :) I didn't realise it was a possible thing, as silly as that sounds. I've always felt like i wanted some alternative to a smartphone, but I never bothered to really *think* about that (because again right now the switch would make my life overall worse so why bother thinking abt it yknow) . but thinking of living a life where I keep these separated devices instead of a smartphone... that's such a happy feeling I get, just thinking about it. What a nice goal I have now :) thanks for making this video, it is so inspiring

I miss flip phones because I could text and drive without looking at it 😆. I think the phone statistic is so high because most people can’t afford a laptop, yea even if it’s just a couple hundred bucks then you have to have wi-fi. You have one device instead of having to get a phone, mo3 player, go pro, laptop and video game. That’s crazy! I feel like you’d be wasting more time just fiddling with them all than if you were to just use your phone lol. But I get it! I’ve thought about going back to a flip phone, but I feel like cutting the usage of being distracted with technology would only work if you didn’t have any other devices as well. Otherwise it’s the same thing as using a phone lol.

Ok delete the apps... plus the camera and the laptop and all the things you need to account for are pretty expensive. But also, the irony of making a video on a platform that bleeds time. I mean. smartphones are not that bad as long as you can manage and monitor yourself. I think that it is doable and the amount of personal growth that you can get from working on using them the right way for your personal needs is far more impactful than banning them all together. Cheers!!
