@@uniquesellers4862(I’m speaking in general so please don’t take this personally, I just think this adds to the conversation) the customers messes it up…so the owners decided to mandate it, and the city allowed them to. Saves the city from having to allot the funds, and owners use those service charges however they see fit which includes ensuring the staff is paid. People like this gentleman in the video have fooled people into believing that it is ok to decide if you want to tip an service employee accordingly because “oh this cost too much” and making them jump through a bunch of unrealistic hoops. If people would’ve just tipped the 18%-20% as we have all been doing , this wouldn’t be happening. Same with barbers…hair stylist. You don’t wanna tip accordingly? Cool, I’ll just charge you more. If you feel like you don’t want to come back, that is fine. But 9/10 that probably wasn’t designed to market towards your demographic anyway.

@@K27SWfirst of all a tip isn’t a mandatory 18-20%. It traditionally starts at 15% and you’re like one of those screens at the point of sale trying to increase the lowest amount. Secondly it was never something we’re “supposed” to be doing. A employer is “supposed” to pay their employees a living wage. If they don’t want to pay them they should hire contractors instead. Lastly if they want to increase the price of the food rather than add on HIDDEN FEES that’s fine DO IT. Instead of having something say it’s $16 on the menu just put that it’s $20 instead of having someone place a whole order thinking it should come out to a certain price then at the end seeing it’s actually 20% more after you’ve already invested the time and energy to order and talked to everyone you’re ordering for which could be complicated if it’s for multiple people. I don’t care if people wanna charge what they believe they’re worth just do it transparently instead of sneakily

I will tell you as a Black Business Owner, one thing I've learned about my people, is the more you charge for any product or service, the more critical and picky people are about the quality. I swear, we had a customer that didn't want to pay $20 for one custom shirt, looking over her shirt with a magnifying glass and when she couldn't find a flaw, she put her tshirt up to the ceiling light and she saw the tiniest cotton fiber string underneath the print and tried to get a discount claiming it was a hair. We showed her other brand new shirts that have random cotton strings left by the manufacturer; but because she couldn't get a discount; we had to make her a whole new shirt. And I agree with you brother $114 is a lot of money for carryout and restaraunt owners have to be mindful of how consumers expectations are affected by pricing. That bread was hella hard!

This review is generally accurate across the board of restaurants/eateries since “the pandemic ended”. It’s like any standard of quality was retired, fired or something and the lowest possible effort of meal prep took its place then increased the price from anywhere between 25-50%. My household has almost completely boycotted “eating out” and have adopted the mantra of “anything you make at home will be better than anything outside”. Thank you for a real review. I worked at a place in my 20's that charged 30% gratitude to cater. Mind you it provided servers and bartenders. I only worked it once. The bartenders recieved tips via a tip jar. And I didnt care about havijg to split that with the amazing servers I had. I had a problem with the 30% gratitude, the business kept for themselves while we did all the work. We all unloaded, the cooks cooked, servers served, and myself and another bartender bartended the whole event. There was no disclaimer that the gratitude was going to the business owners, who weren't there and did nothing for the event. I'd be surprised if whoever got the order together saw a pennie of that 20% added.

I have never heard of the 20% gratuity and I live in Maryland typically eat at higher end spots than what Chime Time reviews. I believe it could be the area, Montgomery County, it could be who he is, and it could be just a carryout. It is rare I would do carryout at an establishment I dont frequent.

When people order take out, sometimes the tip is forfeited. So I wonder if they’re adding it to the meal anyway. 🤔 To-Go boxes cost but shouldn’t be that much. Nevertheless, I hope they list it on the menu before ordering😬

I haven’t been to the DMV in years, but crab is the only thing that comes to mind. I’m from CT and it’s known for pizza (and even that depends on preference). When I think of true foodie cities, Chicago, New Orleans and Philly come to mind. Hopefully you’ll be visiting those places soon. Gilben’s in Philly has really good po’boys.

In most states “Gratuity” is optional and you have to be advised in advance and agree, it can’t be charged as an automatic add-on. There’s no way I’d pay 20% gratuity for carry out (besides packaging, what additional services did they provide?) and with food at that price being mid or less, I’d return it for a full refund. It’s not like CT will ever go back there.

You can’t judge food by takeout. I worked at a restaurant that WOULD NOT do takeout because the quality of the food is degraded by putting it in closed containers. Especially fried foods. Don’t be shocked by the price you ordered seafood. Also the Real Estate prices in the DMV mean yeah you’re gonna pay to eat at Restaurants. I paid $30 and received 4 scallops on my entree at Founding Farmers in DC be glad you got enough to fill you up.

Forcefully charging someone gratuity is completely wrong. There should be a law that prevents restaurants from taking advantage of customers like this. Gratuity is and should only be given by the customers who wish to give a certain amount based on service provided.

FYI, the 20% Gratuity is not a "State" thing. I've lived in MD my entire life and never had a 20% gratuity applied on a Takeout order. Rarely do I have an automatic gratuity added dining in either, unless I'm going with a big party. It's at the greedy discretion of the establishment. I will cancel my order on the spot if I ever catch a restaurant applying a forced gratuity to my carry out order.
