What an depressing song. Very well sung though. And i love Dave Gahans voice.
I'm going to have to react to this group again. As this is definetly my kind of music!
This is my reaction to Depeche Mode Blasphemous Rumours! Also my first time hearing Blasphemous Rumours. Depeche Mode Reaction
In this reaction i Fully analyze this song as much as i can. Hopefully i understood it well.
I touch on some rather sensitive subjects in this reaction. I'm sorry in advance if this upsets anyone!!

That’s what makes this band so great. You take a great deep philosophical writer like Martin Gore combine it with Alan Wilder’s genius musician and Dave Gahan’s passionate frontman and you have something very special. Their songs just brings out hidden emotions that is buried deep inside and it’s like the greatest coolest thing to be moved.

I think you missed the point that the girl in the second verse is the same girl as in the first verse. She tried to kill herself, failed, found religion, and then got hit by a car. Hence the chorus accusing god of having a sick sense of humour.

Whether its the same girl or two different girls probably does not matter .... the message of the song is the irony of "god's will" ...how a young person who loves life can be taken from life by god but another one can abhore living so much but does not die even when commit suicide ... its Martin Gore's admusement at how christians attribute deaths to god's will as a good thing while disregarding the dead person's attitudes towards life and death ...

Pretty sure most of the "odd sounds" you hear in this song are various sounds related to the accidents and the hospital visit: Tin can = Wheel hubcap (which was not uncommon in the 80s). Lighter click = scissors used at hospital to remove clothing. Various gurgling and breathing sounds = life support machine.

Hi Seph- catching up with some of your earlier posts as I love seeing your reaction to the magic of Depeche. Blasphemous Rumours is classic early Depeche and is as impactful now as it was when I first heard it on release. Yes it’s a serious subject, but it’s irony is the storytelling - coming out of darkness, finding hope, only to have destiny decide. Martin was perhaps 20 or so when he wrote this. Just amazing. 🫶

I just rewatched this. Seth, you're a beautiful human being. Its so very fitting that you've discovered Depeche Mode. Likeness attracts. I saw this reaction months ago, and have enjoyed your DM journey ever since. This journey of yours is unique. You taking it song by song, album by album like we all did back in the day. I know youve heard reservations about the post Alan Era. Don't listen to the ney sayers. Alan was a great artist and an intricate part of spawning what would become DM as we know it. But make no mistake. Martin and Dave or DM OG. They were there before Alan, and they got inducted into the R&R HoF decades after he left. Vince Clark even, to this day, has an influence on Depeche Mode (He and Martin have remained close.) Not only that, but somewhere in the 2000s, DM had a surprise, live guest appearance for some piano player to accompany Martin in a nastalgic rendition of Somebody. I can't imagine who that might have been... (alan...) This band is so very special in so many different ways. Depeche Mode Forever 😁

This song highlights a few of the genius parts of DM. Early on, they actually used creative sounds made by "rolling around cans/bottles" hitting corrugated steel with a sledge hammer and other organically manufactured noises to make a distinct mix with synths and Martin, possessed a unique ability to write about and challenge the heavily laden Christian values in Western society in the 80s, 90s. Aspects about lust, shame, guilt were vividly and creatively depicted in catchy lines, just like the one you point out in this song. I could relate so much!!!!

It was the same girl and over your head dude. You had to live the 80's to understand that music should be very deep and make you question everything, including the meaning of life. And should not just be the product of some singing talent show, as you may have grown up with. The weird sounds were ingeniously crafted to perfectly capture the sensation of the evil that, maybe, underlies and permeates this life. And the more upbeat chorus, with its incongruously dark and profound lyrics was intentionally written that way to contrast the apparent superficial frivolity of life with the darkness that may, in fact, be its underlying reality. That was when music was music and you may not have grown up in an age and musical culture which enables you to appreciate it, as it was intended to be appreciated.

Going by the lyrics, my impression is that this song is critical against religion and the hypocrisy about it. This is what Martin Gore said in 1990 about the meaning behind it: "I was going to church a lot at the time, not because I believed in it, but because there was nothing else to do on a Sunday. I found the service very hard to take seriously. The whole setup is quite handy but I’m not sure that’s what God intended. Particularly a part of the service called the prayer list, when the preacher rattles off the names of those sick and about to die. The person at the top of the list was guaranteed to die, but still everyone went right ahead thanking God for carrying out his will. It just seemed so strange to me, so ridiculous and so removed from real experiences.”

Well... this was a jump into DM lol. French Bulldog Hugo below suggested some great ones. DM is also very heavy in the romance/sex area of lyrics, a couple Hugo mentioned included. In that direction I'd suggest: Behind the Wheel (sex/romance) Blue Dress (romance) Only When I Lose Myself (the album version has the primary singer singing it, personally I like the secondary singer & songwriter singing it more - though both are lovely to check out. If you choose the live I suggest this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o7uBrZxp1qvKhY0.html ) (sex/romance) Somebody (romance) Dressed in Black (sex) In Your Room (romance/sex/torment) A lot of their songs ride that line/mix between sex and emotional/physical torment because of the inclinations of the primary songwriter/secondary singer. While exceptions, DM tends towards the subjects of death, sex/romance, and addiction... in delightful catchy or and often dance-oriented styles of songs! lol

The song's called "Blasphemous Rumours" and it speaks for itself. There are two different girls as examples - the 1st one goes on living without a wish to live, and the 2nd one dies while loving life. That's why they sing that "god's got a sick sense if humor". So the moral of this song is that god takes away what you love the most (if you believe in that magical being in clouds, of course).

The thing one has to understand about early Depeche Mode is that this was very primitive electronica. The synth sound was very basic and the artists making these tracks (including D.M of course) was really putting a lot of work into this. Creating the sounds and tracks were time consuming and took skill. They did it beautifully and made everything blend flawlessly. They blend their vocals so nicely too between Dave Gahan and Martin Gore. Much of this sounds primitive today but back then it was state of the art and cutting edge. The riffs and beats were like nothing ever done before. It was the hay day of new wave / electronica. D.M, Pet Shop Boys and Duran Duran were putting out album after album of incredible stuff. Glad you're playing all these tracks from the past. I grew up on it. loved it. Cheers!

"find him (god) laughing"...kinda how the ancient Greeks thought about life and the gods...the only explanation they had for the absurdity of life .. was that mortals were put here by the gods for their amusement...
