I reviewed the Sofirn SC29, a floody 21700 cell EDC flashlight. Sofirn is using a new kind of lens in this light - I'd describe it as a textured TIR lens, rather than a frosted diffuser that I've seen on some Convoy models.

Sofirn SC29 Video Transcript
General thoughts after a week of usage/size comparison/practicality/interesting things:
• Sofirn has always been in my top 3 picks in terms of best-value flashlights out there, they're so accessible price-wise for anyone and have everything you need included in the box. The SC29 is a 21700-cell flashlight from Sofirn that produces 3000 lumens
Overall Construction, LED, lens, bezel and reflector
• I like the new matt black anodizing that Sofirn is using on their lights. Their older lights like the SC31 Pro have a more glossy finish that's slippery. This one is grippier, especially with this knurling. Tastefully done, and functional, and reminds me a bit of the knurling on my Fenix lights. The machining is clean, and of great quality, especially at this price range. USB-C charging - gasket design feels more sturdy, good quality rigid clip - feels a lot stronger than the one on my SP35 - it's also deep carry. Large button, and rubber, also functions as battery indicators. Magnet on tailcap.
• XHP50B, paired with a textured-looking TIR lens. Hard to describe it. Think of it as the TIR equivalent of an OP reflector, a glass lens on the front. The bezel can be unscrewed easily by hand.
UI - modes
• Press and hold from off for moonlight. Press three times to lock/unlock.
• Press once to turn on (memory mode). Press and hold for LMH. Double press for turbo. Double press again for the strobe.
Performance - total output, beam profile, longevity, practicality
• Ceiling bounce test, CCT, CRI.
• Predominantly floody beam but with a large hotspot. Surprised by how far it throws. Probably would throw further with a normal TIR lens. I didn't notice any artefacts in the beam, no ringiness. It's one of the nicest flood beams I've seen on a flashlight.
Considerations
• FET driver - significant drop in light during step down too.
• Wish it had a metal button - it looked like it did from the photos but I was disappointed it didn't. Would have made it feel more premium.
Verdict
This is one of the best-value pocket floodlights out there! It's a perfect walking light, glove box, EDC, and camping. Anything where you'd want to illuminate a large area. It's suitable for even mid to long-range purposes. Even though the beam profile is quite wide, the sheer output allows it to reach over 200m for short durations! The 21700 cell makes it handy for long trips and onboard charging is essential for general-purpose lights like this.

The SC29's wide angled beam looks exactly like the one by the SP35T that I've just received in the mail today. Both models use the Cree XHP50B emitter and the 21700 format cell. I noted that the SP35T has a super bright flood like my Wurkkos TS22, only the light is a bit more diffused wider than it is further.. There isn't a definitive center hot spot therefore highlighting a particular object in the distance would be tricky.

It's a great alternative to the SFT70. Seems to produce less heat too!

Glad you like them! Yes I thought the long range ones weren't doing the light justice, too much ambient light and it's also suited for short to mid range scenarios.

The usual park with the familiar trees at known distances is great for comparing thrower type lights (300m and higher throw) and we the viewers can go back and compare lights in videos months ago with the latest ones; but this was a great change up to give some real world examples of the width and reach of a light like this. It demonstrates very well the useful EDC capability and the very smooth even beam pattern - a great lens for a walking light. I find that using lights with very bright hot spots( such as SFT40) on long walks causes some eyestrain after only 20-30 minutes because to have the spill at a useful brightness, (to avoid tripping on uneven ground) the hotspot is too bright. Have you heard if they intend to offer it in 5000k? Great vid as usual.

Yeah I find that main location doesn't do this light justice. The camera struggles to pick up the beam unless I ramp up the ISO. This is a sweet light for short to mid range. Haven't heard from Sofirn about other LED choices. Thanks Scot!

That flood looks like a big hotspot. Its like you are "throwing" a "flood" beam if that makes sense. General purpose light. Its nice.
@DarrenYeoYT
@DarrenYeoYT 6 ай бұрын
It does, it's a bit confusing as a floody OP of the same size/LED probably wouldn't be able to match this light. It's that 'textured' TIR lens..

Sofirn does come up with a few interesting designs. Maybe a little too many if you ask me - some of their older classic designs could do with an upgrade tbh - especially in the driver department. They've already got great regulated drivers in their models such as the C8L, SP35, SP31 v2.0 and a few more - so we know they definitely are able to offer buck/boost drivers. Cheaper FET-driven probably nets them more profit though, so I get it. Plus it means the lights get impressive turn-on brightness.
@DarrenYeoYT
@DarrenYeoYT 6 ай бұрын
Yeah those FET drivers are cheaper, and I think the average consumer doesn't care or notice it stepping down. I still think they're a great deal. For throwers though, I need some kind of regulated driver to maintain candela.

@@DarrenYeoYT It is in my car, I remember it has a reverse clicky tailswitch with a tap to switch modes, double tap turbo - not sure, have to check later. However, just like your SC29 a superb floody beam - really pleasant!

@@DarrenYeoYT I honestly thought it is a regular TIR sitting on a reflector element. It reminds me of halogen bulb setups. It would really rock with a warm LED. The SC28/29 is great for close and medium ranges. That is why it stays in my car.

I just want to make sure I understand the tests. Turbo, starts out at 3000 lumens and after 30 seconds drops to 600?
@DarrenYeoYT
@DarrenYeoYT 4 ай бұрын
I don't have a proper lumen tube so it's all just relative numbers. Yes, assuming turbo is 3000 lumens. It could be 2500. It does step down quite a lot. Normal through with high output lights.
