Whereas in America.... They teach no languages. Some high schools make you, but it's not like you can speak fluently. Even in college, I only had to take it to satisfy course requirements and the teacher that taught it, knew that. It was Spanish, but she did more on basic language, but more on culture bc she lived in Spain and went to school there. She was of the thought that in order to really learn the language you'd have to live it. Either that's at home with grandparents or parents, or live abroad and be forced to speak it and learn it every day. I was always so envious when I hear kids had to learn other languages in school and can speak them fluently. A lot of kids I knew came from Portuguese families and a lot of their parents didn't even speak English! I'd be like ugh, I wish I could speak two languages! Lol, lucky! My grandmother spoke Lebanese, but not often.

Russians, on the other hand, have to learn 60% of topics in estonian in school years 10-12. I went to school already back in 1998 and haven't had even one lesson of russian. And today, there's even less russian influence around.

- Corrections & Comments - @ Living Ironically in Europe 03:12 Few because it was October, Pärnu is the summer tourist city, known for it's beaches and summer festivals. In october Pärnu a chost town (lived there for 4 years). 04:20 You are showing the Old Town, not the center of the city ;) (lived in Tallinn for 4,5 years) 07:36 Incorrect up to 23% of people living in Estonia are ethnicly or identify themselves as Russians. 07:39 Also incorrect, Estonia is not bilingual, the language here is Estonian, but majority also speaks English and many(close to 40%, not most and mostly elderly) speak Russian and other languages (More people understands Finnish than they do Russian). Average Estonian speaks 3 or more languages by the time they finish Elementary school. By law you are obligated to be able to speak Estonian in most jobs and all government jobs(or you will loose the job and get fined also who hired you will get fined for braking the law). 07:46 What ? If you mean the special russian then yes they still have some, but no average/normal Estonian school is "required" to teach russian, thoug they are required to teach Estonian and English, the third language usually is an option (most schools offer German, Russian, Finnish and even Sweedish), less and less children opt for Russian, usually they go for German or Finnish (as german is the "EU" language and Finnish as many many many, tens of thousands, young men go to work in Finaland). Also i have no idea where did you get those %, as the "special Russian schools" are rare (almost all are in Tallinn) i have no idea about their teaching regulations. 08:00 Firstof all no, as i just wrote, most children in schools do not even understand nor learn Russian, you are only talking of the few still active "Russian schools", and the church was built by russan goverment to intimidate (&show Russian power) Estonian rulers in the parlament building, there's a long story behind it. 08:40 Yes Estonian won our Independence war against Russia almost conquering Saint Petersburg before the Peace treaty was signed. Estonia has been occupied by many many countries, not only by Russia (the last was Russia that's it), the longest rule was under Germans some years before, also at WW2 Germans did no damage, they actually helpped in the independence war, they are said to be the bad ones but in actuality they only officially "occupied" Estonia for 2 days then turned it over to Estonian representitives and even game guns and other needed supplies (some german soldiers even joined in some of the larger battles, even large number ofd ethnic Russians joined up against the Russian invasion). 08:59 Yes, i was in the chain and was also at "lauluväljak" with my family and another 300 000 Estonians. Please contact me i would happy to send you all the official links of the corrections(most is in wikipedia allready and confirmed).
@kr0pp2 жыл бұрын
You are wrong, in many schools there is no choice between German and Russian. For example I had to learn Russian for third language, no alternative. I started school in 1998. And besides whether 23% or 25% of population is Russian is such a small difference that it is within the margin of error, who cares :). Besides there's bunch of other people here that speak Russian natively, even though they may identify as Ukrainian, Belarussian or even German.
@KrK-EST2 жыл бұрын
@kr0pp Correction if you read other people commentarry on this video too you see that mostly the heavy russian speaking areas meaning Tallinn and north east Estonia rarely has the options. I live in Harju and started school in 1993 and got the option to select after 2 years of English, chose German as 14 other (the minimum). The option is only there for most schools if there is enought students to have a class. Also i can say i might know more about Education in Estonian goverment than a random person here as my whole extended family has degrees in Education and my fam and aunts together have 100+years of experience both in kindergarden, basic and middle school and they have helped correct the gov. education plan over the years. I have talked and discussed with them about the language options in schools and they have agreed, over the years they have done some recomendations to the system about it and most have been added(example each scool has ability to select their own after mandatorry Estonian and English classes). To tell the % are pointless and noone cares, dude have you ever done any paperwork on any goverment area ? even a 0.1% matters. And in Estonia we have real presice counts as the govermental system counts every person living here. Yep i'm a friend to many people woth Ukranian nationality, only the grandpatents and parents speak Russian, the children speak Estonian and English some might understand Russian and might speak but mostly speak Ukranian. (One of those families are my nabours and have been for past 30 years.)
@kr0pp2 жыл бұрын
@@KrK-EST ofcource these percentages matter, however in this case with an entertaining video it is just nitpicking. Still gives a good overview.
@KrK-EST2 жыл бұрын
Yes, only thing that was wrong and also can not be let slide by any (patriotic or any) Estonian is that Russian is a mandatory learnt 2cond language (as it sugested). If they referr to the occupation then Estonia should have atleast 3 other mandatorry languages as over the hundreds of years we have been occupied by several much bigger powers but we still are free and own our own land (exept Petseri that Russia sole just few years ago and will not want to give it back, EU does npt care, another reason why big part of estonians are considering brexiting EU). But yes the video and production seemed real nice few of the things not quite correct but mostly have been let slide by us (most dont care to correct anymore, as the saying goes "käega lööma" that does not translate). Anyway have a nice day and good last days of summer.

Bullshit. The internet connection level is very average in Estonia nowadays. 10 years ago it seemed good but nowadays it works mainly in cities and besides main roads. Other places are pretty much internet free. Estonian development stalled about 2014 2015 and never started again. Education system is 90 percent from Soviet time. I used to work as teacher and there were always numbers numbers numbers, outcome outcome outcome. It was pretty much like sport.

I love Estonia 🇪🇪 But I went in summer. You can eat well as a vegan/vegetarian if you’re a tourist. We found wonderful restaurants with those kinds of menus but maybe a bit pricey. Also Americans (like me) probably more impressed with all the medieval historical towns & Tallinna Vanalinn because we don’t have anything like it here. The historical sights and architecture are super impressive to me. Also I read Indrek Hargla’s “Apothecary Melchoir” series which teaches so much about medieval Tallinn and the Hanseatic League. This is likely why Germans love it. I also saw a lot of German tourists while there. But anyway, I had to cancel a return trip to Estonia in 2020 and I am still sad about that. You can choose between german or russian. Nobody has to learn russian. In some schools you can also learn french or something
@martinusv74332 жыл бұрын
I had Russian in my curriculum from the 3rd to 9th grade, and all of my classmates took it as it was compulsory. So it depends on the decisions of every particular school, you can't just claim that "nobody" at all has to learn Russian...

Estonia survived because Russia had other problems like the Russian Civil War

And Russian (White Army) helped Estonia against the Reds in its War for Independence! So Russians were on both sides of that barricade!
