Ryan, as your older brother, I would like to give you some advice: Go to China often and see your family. One day, when they leave this world (I hope they have many long and healthy years), you will regret every moment you didn't see them when you grow up. I never saw my grandfathers, but I regret every moment I couldn't be with my grandmothers before they died. Don't make the mistakes I made. Even if your home is America, your roots are in China and never forget your culture.

Happy to see more overseas Chinese reconnecting again :) I was born in Europe, but my parents brought me to their rural Chinese hometown so they could focus on earning money while I was taken care of by my grandparents up until i turned 4/5. Though I was not there for as long as you did, I still have many memories of that humble but free life I had. I am sad and regretful about not visiting my grandparents more often as they are getting real old now, and one has already passed away. This serves me to learn to take nothing for granted and really cherish the moments you have with your family. If you have the financial means to do so, please visit them often. To our grandparents, seeing their children and grandchildren is one of their greatest joy in life.

Pozdrav. Izvinite ako sam pogriješila ponegdje, nisam nažalost 100% savladala "naš" jezik.

This is kinda personal , but this is one of the most relatable vlogs I have ever watched. My oldest cousin from Canada came to Bangladesh (our home country) after 12 years. Even though we were 18 years apart we were still really close with each other. We would spend hours chatting. It really felt like he was my biological brother . On the day, he left he bawled his eyes out and so did I . I saw that bond in you and your cousins which we often don't see in this world of internet. Loved your vlogs!! Definitely coming back for more.

As a Brazilian guy who lives in a big city, I identify so much with you when you visited your old hometown in China. My family was raised in the countryside, and the last time I was there, I got in touch with a part of my family that I had just forgotten about. Since the last time I saw them was like 15 years ago. Even though the whole experience was life-changing, as I feel more connected with my roots and felt so loved and seen by this part of me that I just forgot that I had.

Cool to see you experienced so many kinds of activity in China! It makes me wanna go back this year too... Also I thought that being raised in a village and moving to NYC was crazy, until I saw your grandpa's birthday celebration lmao

You picking your cousin up from school and making him a burger will for sure be core memories for him when he grows up. I for some reason got tears in my eyes thinking about it. Such wholesome moments that feel ordinary but they become some of the best memories when we’re older 🥹

This got randomly recommended to me and it reminds me of my cousins. They were born in Hong Kong and moved to Utah over 12 years ago. They are coming to HK to visit us next month and although we have visited them in the US they have not been back since they left. I bet it will feel just as nostalgic as you were in the video, other than one of the cousins who left HK as a toddler. Their mom (my dad's older sister) and my dad were actually from Fujian too, like you, and they moved to HK as kids, and your village reminds me of his village

Choosing to live in New York instead of china right now at this perfect moment where the young people in china as so much more advanced and literally becoming over night millionaires seems crazy to me. Especially when you speak English so well. I’d move to shenzen and be an important part of a company.

this randomly popped up for me and reminded me of the time I lived in China. Whenever I craved the taste of home, I would order McDonalds and though I am not a fan of KFC, I thought the one in China tasted better than the one here in America. I even like the slight differences in menu. This was such a fun vlog! 😄

KZfaq recommended this and I certainly did not expect to see my hometown Xiamen here haha. I also spent some time in Fuzhou when I was younger, so this is very nostalgic for me and makes me really miss home. Glad you enjoyed the experience and got the chance to reconnect with your roots! Kind of a missed opportunity that you did not try 沙茶面 (sha cha mian) when you visited those old streets of Zhongshan Rd but ban mian surely is good!

Keep in touch with your little cousin if you can. You can tell he loves you as his big brother and will miss you greatly. . I know living in NYC can consume your life if you let it but keeping in touch with family is important too. The hard part is the time zone difference. Continued success with you vlog.

This is such a good video. Thank you for sharing your life. I’m so glad you got to experience this as a young man. That you got to spend time with your grandparents cousins and again feel a place that is part of you. Life in the US will take over again, but I hope you make visiting your family an annual priority. Nothing is more important than family. Think of it this way, if your grandparents are 70 and you go back once a year then you will see them probably 15 to 20 times. That’s not a lot of time . Not to be morbid, but that is the reality and hopefully it inspires you to make them a priority. I learned this way too late in life and just wanted to share. Also, they will never ask you for anything, so just do what you know is right, so you create good memories for your life and have no regrets.

Ryan, what you went through is the exact same thing I went through but at 21. I had gone back for 3 weeks after 10 years, and it left me craving so much more about my roots that I went back again at 24 through a study abroad program that was a year long. As an ABC, and born in America, I had only gone back to China when I was around 10 years old. Reconnecting with my grandparents, forming a relationship with my godmother that I'd only met once when I was 9, meeting my godbrother (her son) for the first time and becoming good friends with him, hanging out with his friends, coming along to reunion dinners for my mom and her middle school best friends that hadn't seen each other in over 30 years, learning to use wechat, etc. Even never "seeing so many chinese people in one place" was something I remember feeling so strongly when I first arrived. My only regret is not starting my YT channel before I went back to China because I didn't know how to capture everything I wanted to capture during my precious time there. The more "levels to adulting" I unlock, the more I'm dying to go back and experience China in a more rich, meaningful way. Thank you for sharing this vlog, so cool to see my own experience and feelings captured so well!!

Hi there. This is the first time I came across your vlog. What a pleasant thing to find out a video maker leaving many joyful memories as if I was really travelled back in time to the era of my young age version literally. Every moment you captured does bring me to the childhood look-back I luckily used to have. Absolutely peaceful to watch from the begining till the end. But there is one little thing that has been raised up my awareness indeed. I really wonder whether the 50-year-old turtle has being raised in such a tiny bucket for such that long period of time?😢

I was able to refill exactly how you felt. I had a very similar experience. This warmth and love will accompany and strengthen you throughout your life, sometimes even making you feel a very strong longing. In my "modern" world I was relatively lonely. In my other "simpler" world I felt safe. Maybe I'll return at some point, I don't know yet. Thanks for the video. It was like I had traveled back in a world too. It was very nice to experience your home country so close. All good luck to you and best regards from Germany.
