The Bourne Identity Movie Description:
The story of a man (Matt Damon), salvaged, near death, from the ocean by an Italian fishing boat. When he recuperates, the man suffers from total amnesia, without identity or background... except for a range of extraordinary talents in fighting, linguistic skills and self-defense that speak of a dangerous past. He sets out on a desperate search-assisted by the initially rebellious Marie (Franka Potente) - to discover who he really is, and why he's being lethally pursued by assassins.
The Bourne Identity is a 2002 action-thriller film based on Robert Ludlum's 1980 novel. It was directed and co-produced by Doug Liman and written by Tony Gilroy and William Blake Herron. It stars Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, a man suffering from psychogenic amnesia attempting to discover his identity amidst a clandestine conspiracy within the CIA. It also features Franka Potente, Chris Cooper, Clive Owen, Brian Cox, Walton Goggins, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. The first installment in the Bourne film series, it was followed by The Bourne Supremacy (2004), The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), The Bourne Legacy (2012), and Jason Bourne (2016).
Although Robert Ludlum died in 2001, he is credited as an executive producer alongside Frank Marshall. Universal Pictures released the film to theatres in the United States on June 14, 2002. The film opened to critical and commercial success, grossing $214 million on a $60 million budget.

Interesting... Both John Wick and Jason Bourne are hitmen. Tho one is more ""realistic"" than the other. John Wick is more proficient with firearms and prob street knowledge, while Jason Bourne is def the more proficient hand-to-hand fighter, is a spy and is quite smart. Not to mention, he has constantly bested the best of the best that the government could throw at him and can think outside the box. It's hard to say. If it were John Wick's movie, he'd win. If it were Jason Bourne's movie, he'd win. I think both would be quite equal, and at this point... whoever wins is up to preference.

I know you're saying "overrated",but you gotta remember that the Bourne movies came a while before John Wick, and when they came out, it was some of the best, fastest, and unconventional fight choreo at that time, and it was basically only the Bourne sequels that were 1 upping each other as they went along. These movies set that bar for everyone else.

Quick cuts and "shaky cam" isn't inherently bad, it's just hard to do well and too often is used to cover up bad choreo or sloppy performances. Doing it this way was a stylistic choice, the idea is that it's all happening in real time and you're there watching it, trying to see it as it happens, no slo-mo, no replay. It doesn't look like *cinematography,* it looks like *combat journalist footage.* But the choreo and the performances and the stunts are all there, they're clean, they read clearly, you're able to catch everything that happens, it's never confusing, you never get lost. It *feels* intense because the imersion is complete - you really feel like the performers are two characters in this fictional world trying for real to hurt each other and that you (or the camera guy) is right there with them trying to catch it all. (The choreo, performances, and stunts all have to be just as good or better to still read when the camera isn't necessarily framing it up properly and cutting away before it normally would) Someone like Jackie Chan will use wider shots, less cuts, less shake, plenty of slo-mo and replay shots, framed up from the clearest and scariest camera angles imaginable, all so you don't miss any of the real danger and real skills on display. But you're more conscious of the fact that it's a movie and it's intense because of a low-key meta-awareness that they ARE performers in real danger and displaying real skill, and not so much the imersion in the story. (There's no out-takes in the Bourne movie credits) Counter-intuitively, Bourne movies look like documentary footage and feels like a movie about real spies. Jackie Chan looks like textbook film school but feels like a documentary about the way the scenes are being made. The worst offenders of shaky-cam and over-cutting most often called out are Michael Bay and Olivier Megaton - (The "Transformers" franchise, later sequels to The "Transporter" and "Taken") they shake the camera so much and cut so often, you don't even know what's going on. It's not scary, it's not intense, it's just loud and confusing. Not so often with Bay, but for a lot of newer action movies that abuse the technique, it's because the choreo, performances, and stunts are NOT good enough for us to see it all and they're hoping that with enough shaking and cutting you won't notice. (And sloppy stunt and choreo performances are a budget issue, if there's *time* to rehearse and do multiple takes, it looks better, if not it looks like crap. Jackie Chan's Hong Kong movies look better than his Hollywood movies because he has more time to work out and shoot the scenes there. He often says he's not any more agile or coordinated than other acrobatic performers, he just has the patience to do a zillion takes.)

could be worse, i think the newer fast and furious movies actually have too many cuts, kingsman did the shaky cam nicely and i think not a lot of cuts
@MoMoMyPup10
@MoMoMyPup10 Жыл бұрын
Anyone who rags on 'shaky cam' is just an empty chair with no sense of the technique's role in portraying a scene. People that think it's important that they see what's going on. It has nothing to do with 'sloppy stunt' and everything to do with conveying a fever pace and intensity.

Clive Owen's character was supposed to be a continual threat to Jason that went by the codename Jackal. That's probably the one thing I wished got carried over from the books. Either way, the books and the movies are fantastic espionage stories. These movies were the first to really do the quick cuts during fight scenes which were a technique copied over and over again by other movies until it they were run into the ground. Just like how The Matrix brought bullet time and that technique was run into the ground.

This is such a terrific franchise. It's based on books which are absolutely nothing like the movies, but I think the way the movies were done were much better for movies because if they had focused on keeping them more similar to the books then it would be way too much of a slow burn. Both are great and Bourne is an absolute tactician...very methodical. Unquestionably one of the best spy franchises. Jason Bourne was my ideal spy character. Because he was so flawed, relatable and stoic. Bourne suffers from an believable case of disassociative amensia In which muscle memory (instant skill set) is first nature and standard memory (identity) takes time to unlock. The novel series by Robert Ludlum debuted in the year I was born (1980). I saw the very-first screen adaptation on tv with Richard Chamberlain & Jaclyn Smith when I was 8 (1988). Definite Inspiration on The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996) and Jackie Chan's Who Am I? (1998). Matt Damon getting his own franchise, 5 years after winning an Academy Award was unprecedented. So great from start to finish and more of an tradition approach to the genre. I have the 2004 special edition of this first film with alternate beginning and ending that makes the story more complex. The next 2 films (2004, 2007) are incredible. The 4th film (2012) with Jeremy Renner is not liked very much. But was a decent enough sequel to me. There was a video game, The Bourne Conspiracy (2008) for PS3 and Xbox. It was a re-telling of the first film and featured pieces of the film score by John Powell. Damon was going to be involved, but parted ways from it for creative differences. The 5th film (2016) with Damon's return as Bourne is a phenomenal one. Extreme Ways (The Bourne Theme) by Moby is killer.

The follow-up Bourne movies are well worth watching. I do have some complaints about some choices the writers took in the stories, but even so they are all better than most. The Bourne movies are all about Bourne finding his humanity and choosing not to be a tool for the powers-that-be (while making the powers-that-be feel themselves the fear they've unleashed onto the world). Great stories with great action.

I think the issue a lot of people have with the fast cut fight scenes are that they use the cuts to get lazy with the fight. If you cut away and let the audience imagine the motion in the fight, you don't have to plan or execute your fight planning as precisely. The Bourne movies, I think even more so in the sequels, have some really good fight scenes that are well planned out that happen to have fast cuts. A lot of people even say this was the good example that other movies have imitated badly. The Bourne movies use their editing style to make you feel that disjointed, split second decision making point of view that Jason is going through. It also uses the camera to highlight details in the scene that Jason is spotting that he will then use to overcome whatever situation he is up against. What they don't do is use tight camera shots to hide the action. If you rewatch this one or look at the sequels, you still get a lot of wide shots where they have to show their action clearly, even as the cuts happen quickly. Also, the United Kingdom and Ireland are the only 2 European countries that have right hand drive cars and drive in the left side of the road. Everyone else is the same as the US.

I should also mention I'm about 5'6", 150lbs and not muscular. The biggest problem in the whole exercise was figuring out how to put the door jamb back together. Later I put an anti-theft door outside of the wooden door, one that swung out meaning that in order to break it...I'd have to break the wall.

1) the end scene was changed, it originally was supposed to be a big explosive action packed generic ending, but then 9/11 happened and they redid the whole last 1/3 of the movie, thinking people wouldn't want to see a big explosion at the end. I don't know what the original ending was, but i do know I loved the unique ending to this movie. 2) this is based on a book series... in the sense the "Jack Ryan" TV show on amazon is "based on" the Tom Clancy books... in short, it's a name and a concept but little remains from the books. 3) the second movie has the best action set pieces in the series (though the best hand to hand fight is in the 3rd movie) but has the least coherent plot... they try to do 2 separate storylines in the same movie with two separate climaxes and frankly the 2nd climax sort of feels tacked on. the 3rd movie is excellent through imho. 4) as a whole the three movies form one of the best trilogies not named "Lord of the Rings" ever made. I do not acknowledge any of the Borne movies made after the 3rd. 5) when you're done with the 3 main borne movies i suggest you hunt down a movie called "Ronin." One of the best cold war style spy/action movies made post cold war. Ronin is unique in that it's car chase scenes are some of the best ever put on film, and the spy/espionage action is fing amazing.

Actually the actual reason is the set caught fire and they had to scrap the fight in there and reshoots with insert shots of Bourne and using close up shots of Nikki from the og ending and also using the fireescape The director commentary says it all.

Way better than John Wick, here it all of the time and the John Wick movies are awesome. The Bourne movies get better and better which was one of the best movies ever when they came out. Everyone wanted to make movies like this. Not really overrated at all when everyone wanted to make the same movie.

You said a few times this movie was overhyped. I don't know. This movie was pretty good when it came out and it was unique having to do with an assassin that lost his memory and was therefore a liability. The fight scenes were definitely a product of its time with the way they were shot. There were definitely a lot of cuts and some of the cuts didn't even fit into the shot, but they did ok considering. One major flaw I have with this movie is when the first assassin who broke through the glass, Jason broke his leg and arm, then he stood up and jumped out of the window- WITH NO LIMP OR ANYTHING!!! UNREALISTIC!!! You've got to remember, this was Matt Damon's first action movie; his first attempt at fighting. So I think a lot of patchwork was necessary. Either way, this movie was pretty good and still holds up. These movies get better so yes, please watch these movies. They are definitely worth it!!!

I think Bourne's fight with The Professor is exactly why you going into these movies with the wrong mentality/mindset, which turn you off instead enjoying it for what it's. You were expecting some kinds of fight like John Wick's when it's the other way around, and it's actually one of the better sequence of moments in the movie too.

Hi MellVerse. I think now it is time to react to some Jet Li movies. Jet Li is one of the greatest martial arts actors of all time only behind the great Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. 1980s and 1990s were the Golden Age of Hong Kong cinema featuring a number of Chinese, Hong Kong and Taiwanese movie stars. You have myriads of movies to react and Jet Li is the very first choice. Some notable examples are the Fist of Legend (1994), which is a remake of the 1972 Bruce Lee film Fist of Fury. This film holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Romeo Must Die (2000) featuring the beautiful Aaliyah (R.I.P the Princess of R&B) or French-American collaborations like Kiss of the Dragon (2001) and the Unleashed (2005). The 2002 wuxia film "Hero" featuring an ensemble cast of Jet Li, Donnie Yen, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Maggie Cheung, Zhang Ziyi, and Chen Daoming. It then became the first Chinese-language movie to top the American box office. And his classic Once Upon a Time in China series, one of the pinnacles of Hong Kong cinema's 1990s golden age and Fearless (2006), the biopic of Huo Yuanjia, who fought his way through tragedy to become one of the greatest martial arts masters in China at the beginning of the 20th century. Please react to these excellent movies, bro. When it comes to action choreography, martial arts scenes, real skills (Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Donnie Yen all are specialized martial artists) and shooting in difficult situations, sometimes even without stunt double, Hong Kong/Chinese cinema is the best in the world.

11:56 - "This choreography is on point man." © Hell no, Mell! This choreography is f*cking sh*t! This is good movie, and all Bourne franchise is good, but it's Bourne fault that Hollywood making the most sh*tiest fight choreography in movies right now (all like one - some epileptic-camera-style crap). Thank God that we have movies like John Wick, Nobody and Atomic Blonde - they put some hope that in the future we will see reborn of normal fight choreography.

The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, in that order, are excellent sequels. The actors actually had real injuries after the fight scene in The Bourne Ultimatum. The story ends for me with that one. Everything is wrapped up and all "Jason Bourne" questions are answered.

Yeah, so i normally agree with you. On this, we are SO far apart. This film series is what all new action films are trying to achieve. There also wasn’t any blue screen, you have to remember older films use older cameras. 😂 The road chase scenes and the hand fight scenes were the very first of their kind.

Shaky camera and super quick cut started mostly in the second Bourne movie when Paul Greengrass started directing them, he came from a more documentary style of filmaking (if you can check Bloody Sunday, the movie he made before about the Irish Bloody Sunday protest, it's not a documentary but feels like it) and pushed it to its extreme with the Bourne movies, Doug Liman (the director of this movie) is more traditional when it comes to editing but doesn't shy away from some guerrilla style filmaking with a lot of handheld camera works. The issue with the quick editing and shaky cam came after the success of the subsequent two Bourne movies and the fact that many way less talented directors tried to copy Greengrass style without even understanding it.

for the john wick vs jason bourne,jason wins... 1. he is a trained super soldier 2. don't give the pencil example,jason did it with a pen 3. jason is an agent more than an assassin,so his first step is always planning,so he plans everything in and out while john wick from what we've seen is nothing like that,he just goes in guns blazing and starts killing bcoz h has that kinda bulletproof suit that jason desn't

Want to see a guy get killed with an ink pen along with some comedy, action and witty dialog? Check out Grosse Pointe Blank with John Cusack. Also, Shoot 'Em Up where a guy uses a carrot(s) to kill. Violent action and over the top, but not a comedy. That's all I can think of for odd objects as weapons. Wait just came to me. The Chronicles of Riddick. He used a tin cup. He's a very proficient killer and he can see in the dark.
