The Canon subscription-based model has indeed stirred up some controversy. When Canon announced its subscription service for its RF mount lenses, it raised eyebrows in the photography community. While some photographers welcomed the idea of having access to a wide range of lenses without the hefty upfront cost of purchasing them, others expressed concerns about the long-term financial implications and the precedent it might set for the industry.
Critics argue that such a model could potentially lock photographers into ongoing payments, making them dependent on the service and unable to fully own the gear they use. There are also concerns about the sustainability of subscription-based models in the long term, especially if other manufacturers follow suit and fragment the market with their own subscription services.
Moreover, photographers who prefer to own their equipment outright may feel alienated by this trend towards subscription-based models. They may worry about the devaluation of their existing gear and the uncertainty of future pricing and availability.
However, proponents of the subscription model argue that it can provide flexibility and accessibility to a broader range of users, especially for professionals who may need access to a variety of lenses for specific projects but can't afford to purchase them all outright.
Ultimately, whether the Canon subscription model proves successful or not will depend on how well it addresses the needs and concerns of photographers, as well as how it impacts the broader photography industry.

Don't be fooled into thinking in any way this is for the benefit of the consumer. None of this is. BMW are already charging you for the hardware of the heated seats regardless of you paying the subscription model or not. There's millions of people still using older equipment because they simply don't have the means to get something high end and that market goes away the moment these 2nd hand cameras become bricks with barely any features because they're no longer supported by the manufacturers.

Right, he gave a horrible comparison using BMW. If the price reflects the lack of heated seats, then sure, but I don't think the car is cheaper because of that. To add, if you don't need or want a particular feature, then why not just buy another product? That's why there are multiple products at multiple price points. Applies to cars (trims) and cameras, etc.

I don’t mind a model where I purchase features I need or want and where those can be selected at a later time as add on features to a base product. What I don’t want is to pay month after month after month for a feature in perpetuity. I keep my recurring subscriptions to a minimum because it is easy to end up nickel and dimed to death. When I buy something I want to own it, not rent it. The only things that I buy by subscription are consumables that are ongoing uses of resources such as electricity, internet bandwidth, cell services, etc. I do my best to avoid anything else as much as possible.

Sorry it should be a one time firmware update to what specs you want in your camera, NOT a subscription model which would require cellular service also to renew your monthly fee or would it be yearly ? For me I’ll switch to Nikon and be done with it 😡

You make some interesting points about more a la carte choices. But that doesn’t mean it has to be a recurring cost. As someone else here said, if we want a la carte options, make them one time purchases. Paying monthly over 5 or so years can add up to more money than the up front cost. And the longer you own the camera, the more you pay. It shouldn’t scale this way.
@camerasutra247
@camerasutra247 24 күн бұрын
It’s all the same pay for it up front or pay over time 😂
@BillSmithBSartist

@@camerasutra247 how can that be if a subscription is open ended and you don’t know then the price. Makes no sense. If you know the monthly cost of the subscription and you know how much cheaper they have made the purchase price then you can calculate a break even point - that’s how many months before you have already paid enough subscription dollars to use up that initial savings. After that it’s all gravy *for them*. After that you are overpaying for that feature. For example, If a subscription model lets you pay $1,200 less to buy the camera up front but your basket of subscribed features is $120/month then after 10 months they break even and after that you will be paying more than you initially saved. If they let you max out the subscription cost at the break even point then it could be a good deal. But you simply can’t ignore that part of the equation.

When Canon added CLOG to the 5D Mk4, I didn't mind, because if you needed it you sent the camera in and paid ONCE to have that feature enabled. Perpetual payment is a different story completely.

It would make used gear more valuable. I wouldn’t buy any new Canon gear. I use a bunch of 1Dx bodies and I’m trying out a R6II. Will also pick up a used R3. If the new Canons are subscription based, I won’t buy new Canon cameras.

You don't understand the technology. To make a camera shutter work at 1/2,000 sec takes physical capabilities that cost more than 1/1,000 sec. If you don't "turn it on" it doesn't make it any cheaper to make. But someone has already "paid" to make it possible. If I only need 1/1,000 sec, then I just buy a camera physically capable of 1/1,000 sec. It will be cheaper to make. Either the company pockets the difference in cost or they lower the price of the camera. But you cannot start with a shutter only physically capable of 1/1,000 sec and then pay a "small fee" to give it 1/2,000 sec. You need to change the shutter. Say you try to take a shutter capable of 1/2,000 sec and then lock out that speed unless someone pays for that speed. Now, say a competing company simply makes a camera with the cheaper 1/1,000 sec shutter and charges less than you do because their camera simply costs less to make. They make "enough" profit and you lose a sale. So you can chose to sell a REAL 1/1,000 sec shutter body, just like your competitor, and save your 1/2,000 sec body for people willing to pay a bit more. Can you upgrade that 1/1,000 sec shutter to 1/2,000 sec? Probably not economically feasibly. You need to replace the shutter, or buy a new body. So if you know you need it, then you pay a bit more for it "up front". Or you can trade in the older body for the one with the 1/2,000 sec. This is how it has generally worked for decades now. And really, it works pretty well. I have had bodies with 1/2,000 sec and never really found it useful, so right now, I don't have it on any of my bodies. You want it on your bodies? Fine, you pay for it on your bodies. It is harder to make and even if it is "made" it might "wear out" faster. Actually, I know that 1/2,000 sec shutters do "drift" more than 1/1,000 sec shutters. If you didn't know that and don't know why, then you should be finding out how things work before giving advice to other people.
@camerasutra247
@camerasutra247 23 күн бұрын
Maybe you are right that I do not understand. However the shutter in the camera would be a base offering if you paid attention to the video. Alterations to the electronic shutter could very easily be done by a paid service depending on how fast you wanted to go. Thanks for the comment it was very insightful.

For this to go down well 2 things have to happen, the base price has to be lower than an R5 is now and ALL the companies have to buy in. If other companies continue to give all features and sometimes add features it will be seen as a money grab by Canon.
@camerasutra247
@camerasutra247 25 күн бұрын
They already grabbing your money anyway for stuff you don’t use. Sony does the same shit so does Nikon they all do it. This will also allow for production cost to go down and also allow folks to only pay for what they want to use. But you’re correct no matter what they do. They’re always gonna be ridiculed like they were for the RF lenses and look at where we are now they’re the number one mirrorless brand in the United States.

Heheh im not sure you get how Canon work.. first and foremost, they live from selling printers 🔥 the photo side is smaller than you can imagine. They make a R3 that has high speed for sport.. low MP. - you need that in your company for event, sport, and so on. Then you need a C70 or video camera for interviews and video with Nd filters build in.. c300 mark 3? Or maybe the R5C with a V Mount battery rig… something with high dynamic range and C-log 2 XF-avx codec. Prefessional video specs for editing. Then you need an R5 or R5C for high mega pixel for corporate portraits and landscapes.. but ofc. That camera doesent have C-log 2 to match the others in video mode. They want you to buy more cameras.. ;) They want you to get 3-4 different cameras if you are a video/photo proffesionel Working with branding and comercial. They do that by making different models of cameras and limit them.. not by making it possible to just buy the upgrade in a software. They need you to throw away you perfectly working camera and get the newest one 😆 And it would be nice if you did that every year ;)

question - for a subscription service to work, wouldn't they have to already bake all that stuff into each chip that is in the body already? I'm just wondering how this really makes it cheaper for the end user in the future - I'd think from a manufacturer standpoint, it still costing them the same? wouldn't it? but now you have some people not willing to pay for it? like it or not Subscription services are here to stay - maybe Canon is getting on the band wagon.
@camerasutra247
@camerasutra247 25 күн бұрын
Correct but they today already control what the chips can do via firmware. Why could they not just do a quick code drop to the camera and done.

Let’s be careful of making this an echo chamber. I’ve been involved with the comment section on the Ordinary Filmmaker’s video. Thus far I have not seen him substantiate his assertion. It feels made up to me in order to create buzz on his channel. And now it’s being repeated here. If he had a reliable source but can’t quote them, then he should say it. He’s not saying it. Maybe it happens the way it claims. But so far he seems to be the only source for a subscription model coming to new Canon bodies. I’ll jump off that bridge when I get to it. But right now our only source seems to be a man who openly admits how badly he wants to grow his channel. Again, maybe he has a secret source and he’ll be right in the end. It for now, his video only showed and Fstoppers article which I found and read. It contains nothing at all that talks about This claim of subscriptions coming to new Canon bodies. I’d like to see other sources that don’t just lead back to him. If anyone here can provide one, I’m all ears.
