I'm currently practicing French with Duolingo and trying to learn italian with Babbel. I'm more focused on the italian. I was doing the same amount for both french and italian for a bit, but it's too much. So now I just do a brief daily lesson of french. I've used Rosetta Stone, Duolingo and Babbel and I find Babbel to be the best because it actually teaches rules, conjugations, tense etc.

Does anybody know why French language books don't use IPA transcripts like English ones do, to help pronunciation? I like languages, but French is like learning a language with a non-Latin script. English spelling is a child's play compared to French.

If you get frustrated remember how long it takes a baby to start speaking, 2 or 3 years. You have an advantage of being able to learn series of things like numbers, days etc. I've been learning Russian for about 2 years, which is known to be difficult due to different letters and cases which change all the words. I found that daily exposure works well, literally every time I eat, I'm watching a video lesson. I found the best teacher on yt who has 1000s of free lessons. I installed a Cyrillic keyboard so I can type. I've watched hundreds of soviet comedies which aren't as bad as you'd expect. After 2 years I'm far from fluent, but in general I can tell what's being said and put my own thoughts into a translation. Actually thinking in the target language is fun eg I'm laying in bed, ya lеzyou na kravat, я лежу на кровать. Critical people say when are you ever going to use it, my reply I use it daily, you don't need to go to Russia to use Russian. Lastly and obviously it's the war in Ukraine, well Russian and Ukrainian are so similar a beginner would not know the difference, the main difference is that Ukrainian uses the letter i and russian the letter и both sound like ihh. Plus rather than go that's an evil enemy language and avoid it I prefer to learn it to offer some hope of peace and understanding in the future. Now I got a d in french, and never ever expected to know Russian to the extent I do now. Best advice from my teacher, don't give up! Long comment but I'm very passionate about this subject and really wish you all the best! Удачи!😎👍
