Have you been diagnosed with kidney disease and are worried that means going on dialysis? Or maybe you have Stage 3 kidney disease and wonder if you will deal with kidney failure or transplant?
Being diagnosed with kidney disease is certainly an overwhelming experience for everyone, especially those people who have never seen a kidney doctor (Nephrologist) before. I see patients all the time who are diagnosed with kidney disease from their primary care physician and are then sent to me with very little information.
More than 1 in 7 adults in America have chronic kidney disease. 37 million people in the US are estimated to have CKD (chronic kidney disease) and as many as 9 in 10 adults with CKD do not know they have CKD. 2 in 5 adults with severe CKD do not know they have CKD.
When these patients do learn of their diagnosis, it is very natural to wonder what the future of their kidney disease holds. Watch this video to hear my thoughts on these questions.

Working as a kidney doctor, I found that my patients were often unaware of just how important diet and lifestyle were and how often they felt unsupported by generic advice to “eat healthy”.
The home cook in me hated hearing this, so I set out to find a better way. I began to combine my medical training and love of food, making videos of simple recipes that were based on science and packed with flavor. Instead of just saying “eat healthy” to my patients, I could give them the resources they needed to make a real difference in their health.
Kidney doctor, passionate home cook, and KZfaq sensation Dr Blake Shusterman empowers people to proactively manage their health by stepping into the kitchen. The author of several cookbooks with over 100,000 KZfaq subscribers, The Cooking Doc® believes anyone, at any age can transform their health with small changes that make a big difference. Based on science and packed with flavor, Dr. Blake’s simple recipes have inspired home cooks everywhere to change their diet, retrain their taste buds, and transform their health.

Oh my gosh…my Dr told me I had Stage 2 and see you in 2 mos! Nothing else. I was scared outta my mind…lost 7 lbs in 3 weeks (down to 114) because I was afraid to eat anything that might damage my kidneys, drank more than 100oz of water a day, developed chest tightness and anxiety until I thought I was gonna have a heart attack. Luckily when I went to the Dr (a different one from the one who gave me the diagnosis) he calmed my fears, gave me some information and hope.

I had ckd3 for SIX YEARS before I found out I had it. My incompetent GP never told me! It was the office who sent me a letter for a blood test. I questioned what it was for. That was when the Receptionist told me! I loathe and detest my GP.

If you could point out some of the things one can do to slow down the progression of the disease, it would be helpful to many of us. I thank you for your time and much needed information.

You are an awesome doctor. Thank you. I’ve been diagnosed with stage 3b and have started eating healthier foods. I will see a nephrologist in a couple of weeks to find out what my next steps are. Thank you for putting my mind at ease.

Hi Doc, I am a CKD 3A patient. Mine was caused by my overdoing OTC meds and supplements. I have no high blood pressure or diabetes so my doctor didn't prescribe any medicine for me. He only advised me to eat right and continue living (hahaha) to slow down the progression of my kidney disease. So am I okay without any medication? I am actually grateful because I don't want to take medicine anymore because I am afraid that it will further damage my kidneys. Thank you always for your videos. You make me less worried.

Thank you , doctor. That was very helpful. Can you do a video on transplants, or how the transplant “ list” works? I hear every state has a list and you can get on more than one list? Also, are there many specifics when it comes to a donor being a match? Do they have to be the same blood type? Within a certain age, or level of health? And how do kidney patients go about convincing a total stranger to become a donor? If you have no family or friends?

Good question. There is lees trust in the medical community since the pandemic than was happening before. Patients are less likely to believe a medical doctor now.

I will make a note to make a video focusing on stage 4. With Stage 4 you still have an opportunity to slow the progression - so many of these tips from this video still applies.
