This movie doesn't have a whole lot of dialogue, but it doesn't need it. The soundtrack and the way the characters are animated with such emotion tells more of a story than words ever could have. It's a true masterpiece of a movie.

This movie was part of my childhood, and still easily in my top 10 animated films. Maybe even top 5. It's so unique, and has one of the best soundtracks of any animated movie I've seen. I have the entire soundtrack on my phone, and sometimes listen to it like I would any other music. The soundtrack is perfect at setting the mood of a scene and expressing the feelings of the characters. "Brothers Under the Sun", "Sound the Bugle", "You Can't Take Me", and "Get Off My Back" are some of my favourite pieces. "Sound the Bugle" in particular can make my cry even when I'm not watching the movie, and I'm just listening to it. The lyrics remind me of how I remember feeling at my lowest point I can remember. When I just wanted to lie down and give up. I didn't know how I could get through what I was dealing with, and I started thinking "What's the point of even trying? What am I getting out of bed for? There are probably people in this world who deserve all the good things I have more than me.". I hardly ate or slept, and was prone to crippling anxiety from university work that would leave me hyperventilating and shaking. I tried antidepressants for a while, but though they seemed to help at first, they eventually started to have the opposite effect and began to make things worse, so I had to stop. This depression hit me in the Fall of 2020, and got to its worst point in probably Winter or early Spring. I have since felt better, but I'm going to need a long break from university to recover. Now, whenever I hear the song, I remember how I felt before, and tears start flowing. Even before that, the lyrics have always had a strong impact on me. As you said, Sprit truly is a masterpiece.

Honestly I'm surprised this approach wasn't used more often for kids movies about animals, the narration basically just reiterates what happens on screen, but a kid can watch it and get a sense of what's happening, without needing to remember details from the dialogue. You could watch it in another language and still understand everything that happens. It's really cool, and having watched it as a young kid it's so well suited to movies for children.

Fun facts: 1) At some point in the movie during his race with the eagle, their shadows combine forming a Pegasus. 2) Those two foals in his herd are a high chance his because that’s how wild stallions work. 3) Rain’s character was actually designed after a Medicine Hat paint mare at the same place spirit’s character was. I can’t think of anymore fun facts that come to mind at the moment. Comment below if you know more!!

The opening scene from the eagel flying to the horses mane turning into grass is 1 scene with no cuts For the different dubs (german, spanish ect) the songs werent dubbed but translated and sung by a person from the country/language When spirit is running with his herd then splits to stand on the bluff its very hard to tell where they switched from the 3d model to 2d animation unless you know what youre looking for Despite being gone, i want to say roughly a year, spirits foals have not aged

This is also one of the first (if not the first) cartoon movies to combine hand drawn and CGI flawlessly. Though its more noticeable now with the people, the 360 spin arounds with Spirit on the hill have at least 5 moments where he goes from CGI to hand drawn. The scene with them in the river also was all CGI except the characters and the splashes they made.

Yeah. Wild stallions are crazy territorial. Stallions in general are nuts. It's why if a male horse is going to be used for anything other than breeding, they're gelded around a year. Makes them much, much calmer and easier to work with. Edit: Yeah. That's why you gentle a horse, you don't break them. You earn their trust. It's an equal partnership. If you can get that, that horse will stick by you until the day you die. Source: Best friend who's a mustang trainer and mom who's been teaching horseback riding for almost a decade.

Yeah, it's a little distracting watching ad an adult, but it makes sense it's there. They were taking a chance making a movie with so little dialogue, and probably assumed some kids would have trouble following it. But honestly, they probably could have gotten away without it. The lack of plot points introduced through dialogue you have to remember made it really easy to follow for me personally, as a kid, and I'm surprised more movies about animals didn't take a similar approach after this one. That said, though it feels a bit out of place sometimes, it's well written so I find it pretty inoffensive. All it does is reiterate what happened in case the kiddos don't get it 🤷‍♀️

This movie is gorgeous. Despite it's very few actual words they managed to make this horse very full of character and loveable. The music is just perfection and the animation is stunning! Sound the bugle now always makes me cry.

As an equestrian, not only did they make perfectly depict what the horses were trying to communicate throughout the film, they did it pretty accurately too. When I rewatched it, I spent most of the movie thinking about I could totally see a horse responding that way in most of those situations.

I am dead serious when I say this was my favorite movie bar-none from the time I was 4 to when I was 11. It's still very close to my heart. And now I'm a digital nomad, so I'm moving and traveling constantly, and the songs "I Will Always Return" and "This is Where I Belong" get me feeling nostalgic for home and my childhood more than anything else possibly could.

I always remembered this movie fondly but the parts that stuck out the most were always those soft guitar moments and the "Get off of my back" song. Beautiful movie over all and love how they don't have the horses talk (other than Spirit's few moments of narration). And that makes it all the more powerful.

This is my second favorite animated movie. I'm so glad you watched it! Also, the main antagonist is Colonel George Armstrong Custer. He was a ruthless and cruel man irl. Fun fact: there are 4 books (mostly prequels), and Spirit's mother's name is Esperanza, and his father's name is Strider, but he was killed before Spirit's birth. The fourth book is basically this movie. Anyway, anyone here used to or still have the Gameboy game of this movie? I used to play it all the time as a kid. _nostalgia intensifies_

And here people is MY SECOND BEST MOVIE, like you said the graphic was sooo good i felt the wind man i really felt it, i was running with him, with them... and it was wonderful 🤩. I learned from this movie that "we don't need words to understand each others feelings, the eyes are the answer to everthing", i also learned the meaning of true happiness and freedom. And finally... always stand up straight, don't look back or down...

This is the reality of many horses adventures. People track down wild horses and uses them for their own use. Breaks my heart because horses and other animals should not be treated with such disrespect. They should be treated with love and respect and realize that horses have hearts and souls, too. So let go of your pride and help the world instead of destroying it.

I love your view on horses, that they are not meant to be broken, but free see, the native americans had great respect and love for nature, and thats the same view they had on horses: they wouldn't break them, but try to befriend them and let them free if they couldn't. That's beautifully represented in this movie Nowourdays the mentality and tecnique to tame a horse without breaking it is more and more common. look it up 'cause is really cool!

This movie is so underrated while having so much emotions and an intelligent story ! Fun fact, in the french dub, Spirit doesn't say "How we won back our freedom together", but "We won our battle for freedom". This has a deep sence in the way it says that they litteraly saved freedom of all horsed and native americans. But then you grow up and realise that riding a horse is the usual way to see a horse nowadays and what colonists did in America. It adds such a layer to the movie.
