I'm sharing my experiences with the recent Microsoft layoffs. I got laid off last week, and this video is my attempt to share my thoughts and feelings about the situation. I hope it can help someone out there who is feeling discouraged about their job situation. I like to highlight the positive opportunities Data Engineers and professionals have in their job searching.
I hope you've found these videos useful. As always, if you have any questions or feedback, please feel free to contact me.

I was a company for about 10 yrs. The same year new management came in, I was diagnosed with cancer. Had surgery and treatment and went back to work after 3 months. The following year I was let go, as I was going back to check if the cancer was gone. Fortunately, I had saved 6 months of emergency funds. You just never know what life is going to throw at you

At least you have skills and will land well. I have walked out of companies over not being paid, worked at companies that went out of business. Literally shut the lights off at some places. It all ended with me moving onto bigger and better things. It's been a great ride ! Good luck to you !

This is why I don't think I'll ever go work for a big tech company if I can avoid it (as a FT employee anyway). At the end of the day you are just a number on a spreadsheet and essentially expendable. I've worked for big corporations down to tiny start ups and the smaller companies have always been a better work environment. Layoffs happen and sometimes they can be a blessing in disguise.

I was also hit by those MS layoffs although I worked on a custom core team. I've survived a number of times with different companies but my luck finally ran out. My first two weeks were anxiety-riddled. I didn't rush out. Taking a small pause to figure which direction to head-in. The idea of trying something new via contract work sounds intriguing. I assume companies are willing to take bigger risks with less experienced contractors. It'd be nice to try something a little out of my comfort zone for which I have less relevant experience. Am I misguided?

Based on my linkedin inbox, there are plenty of contracting roles to be filled. So I agree that seems like a good route. I'm in the same spot wanting to try something a bit different. Good luck

when you are laid off the last place to go to is recruiters. They tell you that you are a good fit for the position, blah, blah, blah, then hang up and call the next person and tell them the same thing. You will hit the most competition this way.

Sux that even the projects that held potential and were "assured" to have contracts and business value got sacked regardless of record profits. Kinda goes to show you, if you ever are too naive to think loyalty matters in these scenarios, the only one is to yourself to keep the edges sharp and relevant. GL on your path

I'm still confused after reading the various news articles and posts. Did Microsoft end their Hololens project? One article I read said they laid off all of their Hololens employees. Another said they ended adjacent projects and are not pursuing virtual reality projects but will keep developing Hololens 2. And still yet another article said Microsoft has been awarded a $22 billion contract from the government. Uh, that's a ton of money. I know what it's like to get laid off. I was laid off from a job back in 2018, and for the first month, I sort of relaxed and did nothing. Actually it was kind of nice not having to go to work. But after the 3rd month or so, it started to get uncomfortable. Trying to find a job is a pain, so I sympathize.

While working for mixed reality I found news reports about the program to be maybe, 30% accurate about anything. It really makes me question any article about big tech projects now. I don't know exactly what's going on right now, I do know there were a lot of very skilled people let go, but there is still a team left working on the current products (hololens 2 and IVAS). What they plan to do next, both rebuilding the team and future products, I have no idea.

I figure if you’re anywhere for more than 5 years, then you’re practically institutionalized, so it’s probably better for your personal development that you have to hustle. Having Microsoft on your resume is dynamite anyway.

I also got laid off recently. The timing cannot be more bad since most of my money are tied to investments so I'm not liquid. But I'm definitely using this time to focus more on trading (forex, crypto, stocks, etc) to prove to myself that I can work for myself. I'm also invested in Vulcan Blockchain so hopefully this year won't be so bad.
