Easily one of my favorite bands. Never miss them when they come through my town. Their early and heavy stuff is amazing, but since "Crack the Skye" they have leaned in to a lot of more melody and experimentation...and it's all just as amazing. And this video shows they're pretty cool guys.

Really heartfelt video. With Gojira EASILY being my #1 band, Mastodon was swift to swing in behind them. I saw them in Omaha, with perfect weather, headlining with Gojira ahead of them. The Gojira performance was absolutely mind melting, as always, and Mastodon really really REALLY pushed to match it and overall it was a borderline out of body experience. It was outdoors, 75 degrees, no wind, perfect sound, everyone was happy. I was there with my fiancé and I'll take the memories and the music to my grave. Sure its just bands playing music, but at times, is so much more...

Only their first 3 albums have harsh vocals. Mastodon is a band that has evolved and matured a lot through the years. (2002) 'Remission' - Their debut and heaviest album, sludge metal. (2004) 'Leviathan' - Their first concept album, loosely based on the 1851 novel Moby-Dick. It's loud, explosive, technical, groovy metal. (2006) 'Blood Mountain' - Their second concept album. Heavy, loud, technical, and melodic. The band's emphasis on clean, melodic vocals instead of the harsher vocals that the band used on their early work continues to grow on this album. Their first grammy nomination. My personal favorite album. (2009) 'Crack The Skye' - 3rd concept album and one of their highest-selling albums to date. It's the first album to feature drummer Brann Dailor as the band's third lead vocalist. It's progressive and melodic. A prog masterpiece, considered by many Mastodon's best work. (2011) 'The Hunter' - Melodic, heavy and groovy, every track tackling a different sound and style. Drummer Brann Dailor described the album as not so much proggy as riff-oriented and "a little more stripped down," akin to that of Leviathan (2004) and "like a really super-heavy Led Zeppelin or something." Very successful album. Their 2nd grammy nomination. (2014) 'Once More Round the Sun' - Groovy, heavy and melodic, the album is a continuation where the band left off with their previous one. No. 6 on the Billboard 200 chart, making it the band's highest-peaking album on the chart and their second consecutive Top 10 debut after their previous album, The Hunter, peaked at No. 10. (2017) 'Emperor of Sand' - Concept album inspired by experiences members of the band had when family and friends were recently diagnosed with cancer. Full of melodic singing and zig-zagging riffs, it reins-in the band’s technical abilities without watering them down-though it smooths out some of their angular edges. The band's best selling album. They won their first Grammy. (2021) 'Hushed and Grim' - The album is the band's longest to date, their first double album. The album also serves as a tribute to Mastodon's former manager Nick John, after his death from cancer in 2018. The band attributes John's passing in 2018 as the thematic lyrical inspiration for the album. It's dark, melodic and ends on a hopeful note. IMO their most ambitious body of work and most mature sounding album to date. By the way, 'Toe To Toes' is a song from the EP 'Cold Dark Place' released on 2017. Three of the tracks were recorded during the recording sessions of 2014's Once More 'Round the Sun, while "Toe to Toes" was recorded during the recording sessions of 2017's Emperor of Sand. This EP is really good. It's like a mellower, jazzier version of classic Mastodon. It's really gloomy sounding. 'Blue Walsh' is easily one of their best songs.

I saw Mastodon live 4 times and each time it was awesome. I have all their albums in CD and vinyl. One of my all time favorite metal bands.

I saw Mastodon and Gojira tour together relatively recently. They're both great.

Interestingly, considering your comment, I saw Mastodon co-headlining with Gojira last year. Great show! :) Melodic metal FTW!

@@markabusireactions if you want to try more Mastodon, the track below shows how they play live (and is very melodic, though note the guitar player who sings is always really twangy live). The real star of this band is the drummer Bran Dailor, so watch him on this track (in which he also sings). This is pretty technical, but far from his most technical parts. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nNVlbMl0rrm6dqs.html

It’s hard to pick an exact Mastodon song that is quintessentially them. If I were to give you five songs to listen to you’d have five different experiences. I’m seeing them on back to back shows in August and I can’t wait. Like another commenter, I saw them with Gojira last year and they blew me away live.

I knew their name but had never heard their music and this was pretty good! New band discovered, thank you!

You would probably like Oblivion, Ember City, Steambreather and for a total switch up in sound Show Yourself in addition to the other suggestions people have made. Re Brann Dailor, have a watch of his Drumeo appearance The Last Baron is insane. He is an incredible drummer.

I love Mastodon, seriously underrated as a band. Check out the song "the beast" from their new album, also has a nice switch up.

I just saw Mastodon Gojira and Lorna Shore in Portland Maine about 11 months ago and they rocked although I was there to see the mighty Gojira I also saw them in 2016 on the Mayhem Summer Fest and again they rocked even though I didn't know much about them at that time Try the song (and video) ASLEEP IN THE DEEP These guys are so talented and the fact that they all sing gives the songs so many dynamics Good pick 👍🤘🧐😎✌️

I went to that show too :) I was on the floor for Gojira, about 15 feet from Joe.. then sat in the stands for Mastodon and they crushed it. I’ve been bingeing on Mastodon since that night.

Mastodon are great! For amazing transistions check out their friends Opeth. Suggest Opeth - Porcelain heart. The last baron, the Czar , Oblivion are great track by Mastodon.

Some people won't like the comparison, but i think Mastodon is like The Beatles. You honestly never know what you're gonna get when you hear a new song.

And Mastodon, being a band with Gen-X members, are definitely old enough to have been influenced by the Beatles, especially with song structures.

Mastodon fuckin rules, insanely versatile band and imo they have the best discog in metal since their debut in 02. High recommend checking out their song mother puncher, it’s heavy and from their first album, just killer riffs and sick drums the whole song, or roots remain for a more recent killer song and maybe their best guitar solo. This song is really different from their usual stuff, they’re are a super unique band, nobody else out there sounds like mastodon and have 3 completely different lead singers is awesome, the drummer is actually their best vocalist
