As a kid, I loved building these kits! It was a real treat if Dad bought me one. I remember that you could order replacement parts from Hubley if you screwed something up or broke a wheel or needed another tire. I would order parts just for fun and have some extra on hand. I miss these kits and wish they were still in business. I too, still have a few completed models. So much fun to build. Oh the memories of the way things used to be in the USA, now kids don't look up and have no social skills, so anti everything.

Built a couple in the 70s, used automotive lacquer leftovers from a body shop for paint. Still have an unbuilt Deusenberg that will likely become a G scale "Galloping Goose" . I used a hand file on the flashing and no precautions. I'm 65 and healthy so the OMG that's dangerous thing is overblown, have fun.

Thanks for uploading. 👍 This Victoria was my first Hubleymodel 55 years ago .i loved the A ford serie because of there was not so many plastic pars as the more expensive Hubley kits . if i rember right i build all of the A series . But i never saw so much alloy flash as in you video. A lot of fun work and file. Regards Bjorn in Sweden

That flash was a major factor in it's demise. Kids would encounter trouble in metal prep, parents would be asked to help and inevitably suffer many cuts. Definitely use a mask when going at it with a Dremel, glasses too. Wash hands really good because that pot metal works into skin. At least you know about priming, something those brands never explained well. And that mutant hood was because they poured it right side at the top.

I had this kit. This was before dremel so I had to use a rat tail file. Nothing fit and building it was not fun but I finished it. The metal stunk and turned my finger tips black. Never built another metal kit.

I received one of these metal kits when I was a kid, as a Christmas present from relatives (I believe it's a Duesenberg SJ like you showed briefly on the sheet, with all the models Hubley had). My Dad and I opened it up. I was all excited to build it. On the other hand, Dad said I better wait, until I had more experience. I listened to him, he after all once welded on motors in an engine plant, and after that was a really good heavy truck mechanic. We stored it away in a closet. Once or twice, I got it down to look. It had a lot of jagged edges (back then I didn't know it was called "flash"), and although we had a grinding wheel in the garage, I couldn't figure out how to get all that excess material off the body, tin snips sure wouldn't do it, so I put it back in the closet. Fast forward 55 years or so ...... I still have the kit, never built it. Some of the pieces are missing now, after my parent's house was burglarized once, and the burglars dumped the kit out on the floor. I never found all the parts. So I guess I still "don't have enough experience" to build it, even though I worked for one of the Big 3 for 30 years. 😉😀😆😃

I put a bit more thought on it, Matthew. If I was starting work on that model today, I would invest in a good set of fresh and sharp flat files and rat-tail files to remove the flash. I would NOT use a Dremel. The metal files would allow me (and you) to remove material without it all blowing around in the air, which the Dremel is sure to do by grinding it off. Less need for goggles and face-mask with the files. Keep the metal body parts wet, or perhaps use a very thin machining oil brushing, when you get close to the final depth you want to remove, to keep it cool as you file the excess off. That will help prevent gouging a hot, soft metal. The rat-tails will get you into the corners better, then use the edge of a flat file to square up any sharp angles. Years ago, I knew that bench grinder wouldn't do the job .... but I didn't have those other hand machining tools, or know about them. You might need the Dremel for removing that section of thick material from the hood, if the files won't cut it fast enough. I know you like the old Fords, would be a shame not to try building that kit, now that it's open.

Wow, I'm pretty sure I had that exact kit as a kid! My uncle gave me this one (or a VERY similar Gabriel Model A if they made another one) and the yellow Packard shown on the side of the box. OK, NOW I'l watch the vid, but so stoked to see this from the start. Edit: This is the Model A I had. I totally remember all the flash! I was 8 years old, so must have got this from Uncle Dan when it was brand new. Unfortunately I didn't have the skills to paint it but I did get it built up and got the steering working (I felt pretty proud of that) if I recall. I learned about stuff like tie rods, and applied that knowledge when I was go-karting a few months later and the tie rod snapped. The guys at the track were about to cuss me out for going off track, when I pointed out the tie-rod snapped. They gave me a bunch of free laps, probably because they knew they could have been liable if I'd have been hurt; I didn't know or care about that, just stoked for more laps! Anyhow, thanks for this vid! Stoked to see this kit!!!!!

Great memories of building 3 of those old metal kits along with my dad and an uncle when I was around 8. I did some of the cleanup but they did most and spray painted the bodies on our porch. I remember a light blue 32, a dark green, and dark blue but don’t recall the kits. I did the assembly with their coaching. The folks who complain about flash on old AMT molds need to watch this for perspective.

I had several of the Fords, a sedan, a victoria and a open tourer, then like a fool parted with them in my 20's. I've still got a pickup, when they were reissued by another firm in the early 1990s. They also made a Model A coupe and roadster, I think two Packhards and at least one Duesenberg. By the standards of the 1950s these were excellent kits - in the day when 'kit' presupposed you would do a fair amount of preparation work on the parts and they didn't just fall together. Sadly all these models are now history - a great pity and the passing of an era.

I haven't built a Hubley but have had experience with other pot metal kits like Protar. I was able to score close to the final trim line and just crack it off. (Experiment on scrap, haha.) Then I used a plane file to file away the last bits that didn't look like a car. A tooth brush with steel bristles was necessary to keep the file from clogging.

I have built more of a dozen of these and can offer some tips. A lot of what I will say here is just basic common sense, but the number of times that I have found these things damaged and abandoned prompts me to mention them, so here goes... First of all, take your time. I use needle nose pliers to gently wiggle the large bits of flash and I have never broken something, but be gentle with this. Use a small fine metal file to smooth out the rough edges. I prefer to use an assortment of files instead of a Dremel, as a Dremel tends to take off too much too quickly. I just take a piece or two at a time, sit and watch TV or listen to music and it goes quickly. Be sure to remove all of the flash, even in areas where you may not think it matters. This is so all of the parts fit together nicely. I have seen where the builder was not too vigilant with this and it results in a loose fit. I build them in three stages. First, I dry fit everything to make sure there are no bumps between joining areas, then I begin tapping all of the holes with one of the screws. Be careful to tap them as straight as possible This next part is very important. I rub the screw on a piece of soap to lubricate it. This works better than oil or grease and does not leave any residue. Turn the screw until you feel it lock up and do not go any farther. Be careful as over tightening a screw will cause it to snap off. When you feel it is too tight, back the screw off and use the soap again. Tap only one piece at a time. Trying to do both adjoining holes will result in a loose connection. I have had to take apart cars where someone has done this and start again. I will run a screw through a hole a few times to make sure it turns smoothly . Once this is done ,I assemble without painting, to ensure everything fits properly, then I disassemble it and paint. I insert toothpicks into the holes on all of the pieces so they do not clog up with paint. I usually find a good quality paint for metal will suffice, but I will go to an auto paint store and try to computer match the actual paint code. Then comes the easy and rewarding part. Assemble carefully without scratching and you will have something incredibly beautiful that you can be proud of. My wife and son call my collection of Hubley models Family heirlooms. Hope you find this helpful ang good luck with your project

Pretty much everything on them fastens with the screws. Everything else seems to be friction fit except for headlight lenses, where I use a drop of Elmers white glue. I've assembled dozens of Hubley and Gabriel Model A kits. I just use a file to remove the flash. Dremel makes it super easy though. I have also built dozens of full scale Model As. These kits originated in the early 1960's, and the amount of flash shows the molds were not, or could not be maintained. I remember doing one of these kits in the 60's, the flash was much lighter. You could clean the flash with a finger nail, or nail file. But for a 9-14 year old n kid like me the Hubley kits did stand a chance against Tom Daniel designed Monogram Kits.

Ford made two versions of the Model A Victoria , steel back and a leather back version which is what you have . The Hubley kits from the sixties were much better quality . It appears as if they didn't have the mold halves adjusted properly which allowed the excess flashing due to separation . Side mounted spare tires were an extra cost option way back in the day .

If I remember correctly, my Dad's friend had to use a hacksaw to trim off the flash. (No lie!) I'll have to post a photo of my Dad's Model A.

You might want to use cutting disks, and a grinding wheel, on your Dremel, instead of the sanding stuff. When you do wear eye protection and a respirator. The kit looks like a great deal of work, but it should look really nice when it is finished. Thanks for sharing.

OH JUST QUIT CRYING 😭 AND GET TO WORK.👍 I HAD ONE BACK IN THE LATE 60's AND I BUILT IT ALL BY MYSELF. THOSE FIRST PARTS WERE THE SIDES OF THE HOOD, THE 2nd PART WAS A REAR DECK TO STRAP A SEA TRUNK ON FOR CARRYING LUGGAGE AND OTHER STUFF THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO CARRY AROUND IN YOUR TRAVELS.

Built a few Hubley models when I was a kid in the 60s. None of them had that much flash.Probably an old Hubley mold that Gabriel used. I suggest reaming out the screw thread holes in the body before assembly as they are hard to screw into.

I've never built one of these kits, but the ones I've seen weren't that bad(flashing). You can do it, and it would be a great video! I think I would buy one myself, looks like a good challenge.

I'd definitely build that! (But I'd rather have the Deusy!) I'd recommend using a jewelers coping saw to remove the largest portions of flash and jewelers files to clean up the edges. And I'd probably use a metal-etching primer. Peace and love.

Love these old Hubleys and I’m going for a complete collection even with some flash around the edges. The Ford models are in 1:20 scale just as the Chevys. Packards are made in 1:22 scale and the Deusenbergs are 1:18. Definatly not quick weekend projects.

Gabriel apparently didn’t bother doing any improvements or updates; just put their name on the box. A good pair of tin snips might cut the excess slag. Then maybe a Dremel and a set of really good metal files. I’d be concerned about losing detail. I still think my first suggestion was best. Back in the box and retire it to a high shelf. If you decide to work it, gloves, mask and safety glasses are a must.

A pack of saw blades, that fit into the number 1 xacto knives does a decent job on that much flash lots of filing work to clean it up. All that roughness on the doors, and such needs serious sanding to smooth it out, before you even think about priming it. That metal was Extremely brittle back in the '60s. I discovered that, the hard way. That's why the model A coupe that I had then, never got finished. I'll Never try to build another one.

Even pre fit and install the screws before painting. You want to know that screw will go in smoothly, before the parts are painted. I leave the screws unpainted, for added detail, and history of the kit. The only screw I paint, is the one that holds the body halves together, and you want to be sure that screw goes in especially easy.

IGabriel bought Hubley then Ertyl bought Gabriel. I've built Gabriel and Hubley models. I also built one of the Ertyl models. The best quality models are Hubley. Gabriel used the Hubley dies when they made the parts. The dies were worn, which is why there is so much flash on the Gabriel models. The last of these models were built by Ertyl. A dremel is the only way to get rid of the flash. You also need to soak the metal parts in clear high quality vinegar.

I have the Model A Coupe, given to me a few years ago by a coworker. Mine has just as much flash. Mine is on a high shelf in the basement behind other boxes never to be seen again. I think the Gabriel branding was a promotional tie-in so these could be sold at service stations and auto-shops that carried other Gabriel products. Good luck if you decide to tackle this project, I won't be tackling mine!

The white wall sticker does not even come close to sticking to the tire. Grind the lettering flat, and I use thick white Rustolem from a can, and paint the whitewalls on after the tires are installed on the rims. Not the best, but it's the only plan I have that halfway works. Definitely warm the tires on the stove in water, before install. Or they will just tear.

Those were great kits when I was a kid. You had to do a lot of filing. Not that difficult, I built them when I was 12 or 13. The hard part was threading the screws. You needed a small screwdriver, which usually had a small handle, that was hard to grip
