We use to have a fuel theft issue where we would go camping, were would bring extra gas for the ATV's. After it happened a few time, I was at an auction, and they bundled 30 five gallon gas cans as one lot, and no one wanted 30 of them, so it wnet cheap, like $30 for the lot. So after that we would fill one can with 4.8 gallons of water, and top it off with gas, gas floats to the top.... after about six of them were stolen, all fuel theft in that area stopped cold.

@@shauna5466 no, we would find them in the woods where we would 4x4, and for some magical reason, their vehicles wouldn't run anymore, and they would have one of the stolen gas can with them... and we got the biggest laugh every time.. you know how hard it is to tow a 100% dead vehicle out of the woods, with hills so steep that most struggle to get up the hills without a dead one being towed... half of them would have to fix the problem on the spot, or hire a recovery crew that started at $500, and went up from there.... hope they enjoyed the stolen "gas"

Facts. Working in law enforcement, I've told a few people who I know who have chosen a bit of a different lifestyle that makes things a bit more difficult.... I said ALWAYS ASSUME YOU ARE A TARGET.... that way, they're on their toes all the time. I said TRUST NOBODY- and assume you're always a target. And I've always helped them take extra security measures. Although in this situation- chalk it up.... lesson learned. It can be replaced eventually. But you can't be. So it's all really not very important. Considering we all know a lot worse has happened in the Tetons.

Just saw your video today. Another idea to consider is that a ranger, forestry ranger stopped by and inspected your site and saw food unsecured in the camp and took the entire box as a lesson. You should have contacted the authority in charge of that type of public lands. They have confiscated it to give back later. Unsecured food draws animals and the danger that wild animals can bring to places where people camp. Tetons, grizzlies should have been in that area among other things. In Tennessee state park this past 6 months saw rangers confiscating food left out at an unattended camp site. Also a few years ago in a MI state park, rangers were extremely upset at an unattended camp site with food left out. People just don’t think about consequences with food left out and animals getting into it making future problems with animals and human interactions. A thief would have also taken your nice folding aluminum table.

Tristan from SUV RVing has a great idea. He bought a very cheap ($20?) tent that is super easy to put up/down and he leaves just that at a site he wants to hold. I was raised in Hawaii where thievery is often an art form and competition. I've lost many things. Including very expensive Nikon camera devices and other miscellaneous heirlooms. It hurts. But I'm a former cop and former corrections officer. I've dealt with bad guys and girls for years. You deal with what lies in your path...then move on. Now we're desert rats living out on the southwestern desert of New Mexico. Fenced and secure compound with many security features. Lots of weapons. Two gyms where I train five days a week. Two big bully dogs. Several outbuildings and vehicles. No one is ever completely safe, however, so vigilance is continual. I do agree with this Gentleman: Never Trust Anyone. At least not initially. Trust is earned, never ascribed or a given. Be well.

i'm so sorry this happened to you. With no tent on the site, it's almost as if someone thought you abandoned the camp. I'm not saying it's right, but it's a good guess that's what someone thought. I'd pick up the cheapest tent you can find and set it up . if anything, it would be a great place to store things out of the weather if needed.

I have the same trip planned for this fall. I also sleep in my car and one tip is invest in a small pop up tent, whether you use it or not to sleep in but it gives you something to put into the campsite to make it look occupied. It's sets up just by opening it and is super fast to close up and leave.

I am sincerely sorry re the robbery/theft. It is a loss and normal to feel violated. It happened to me several times and in different ways. It left me feeling as if there is no hope for humanity. However the best thing I found is to talk about it as you do in this video, to strangers, friends, relatives. You are a good Soul, your parents raised you with good morals. There are many of us like this who are good folks and can be trusted, but there are a few who can not. Because of the few, I lock everything up when I camp and use common sense when camping especially in "uncharted territory". You have excellent content here. Please keep posting more videos. A+

Sorry for what happened. Anything that can quickly and easily be scooped up and gone is vulnerable. I've been camping, starting in the late fifties with my parents. Worrying about having items stolen was not a concern. There were far fewer campers in those days. Most were tent campers. A few retirees would tow travel trailers. Campers were a close knit community. Not so today. I trust no one! With the advent of motorhomes, camper vans, truck campers, more people go "camping" than ever before. And now the homeless have learned about free campsites, which is why I try never to stay in a free site close to a city. Week end partiers, fully equipped with their arsenal of firearms also are a concern. Hopefully this is the worst that you will have to confront. Good luck!

WY native here. I'm guessing that your food/kitchen items were confiscated by Forest Service or Bureau o Land management, to mitigate any bear/human interaction. Being in the Tetons /Bear country it is unlawful to leave food or any kitchen items unattended in camp. Usually they will impose a hefty fine, but seeing as you were gone in your vehicle they probably just took your stuff. The ranger most likely would have returned later to hand out citations and offer some education on camping in bear country, as well as return your items.

That blows big time! I've lived in the area for years, first in Jackson when it was still possible to live there without being a billionaire, and now in Idaho on the quiet(er) side of the Tetons. If you've fled the area after your bad experience that is a shame because we are just entering the best season of the year. Most of the locusts (AKA tourists) have gone home, the frost has wiped out the bugs, the aspens are turning and the elk bugling. I've reached the point where I never go to Jackson in the summer unless I absolutely have to. But drive out the Gros Ventre road past Kelly for a few miles and it will start to look like Wyoming instead of Disneyland. Drive 30 miles and you can camp with no other vehicle within sight for a mile. Or pick one of the 80 or so remote camping spots on the Greys River. I've spent a total of months camping in the region surrounding the Tetons. A couple of basic rules: Always have a fresh canister of bear spray handy in the tent and know how to use it. Ive met a lot of black bears, been backed down by mama bears with cubs, and had a few Griz run from me. If you are car camping keep your bear spray ready for two footed bears. As the USA has degenerated, my self protection is now a short barrel 12 gauge shotgun loaded with slugs and buckshot. For $200 you can't afford to be without one, and your attacker won't talk back. Whenever I feel like I want to camp in an area with too many neighbors I always lock my car and take my mountaineering tent and cameo tarp off to a site where it would be difficult for an intruder to find. Far safer than camping in a car or tent where a nut case may be tempted by the sight of a young woman alone, And even if your have to put a stop to it with a shot gun the police will throw you in jail until your lawyer waves paper in their faces.
