I feel HMP should hire guys like this to talk from the heart to trainee prison officers. Even if it’s just on a consultant basis. Imagine starting out in this career and sitting in a room with this guy telling his story from the heart. I think it would be enough to prevent at least some folks from making the wrong choices. Anyway, as many have said before me, I wish him only the best going forward. He’s paid the price. Don’t let life break you bud. Edit: I originally commented while still watching. Its insane. They are so so manipulative. I worked in a kitchen and there was so much competition to see who could make me fold first. Sex, drugs, phones, outside contact. Luckily another inmate let me know they had a bet, plus multiple family members have been in for 20 plus years, (aaand my type of guy is more of an acoustic guitar player so i don't really have an attraction to any of them) That didn't surprise me but what surprised me was how well they knew me despite the fact that I tried to be the same with all of them. If i had a bad day, they knew no matter how bad I tried to act like i was okay, they that i was upset. THAT creeped me out.

@@Threemore650 every country has corrupt prison officers. They have been known to rape (prison officers having sex with an inmate is legally rape) inmates, mistreat them and do terrible things. "Can't do the time; don't do the crime" that doesn't mean that inmates should be treated inhumanely. British prisons can be very tough. Many inmates are locked up for 23 hours of the day. Britain’s prison record is currently, like its public health record, among the worst of any country in Europe.

@@reevs2153 Are unions common/strong over in the UK? I didn't think they were as I've never hesrd much coming from any particular UK based union, regardless of industry whereas im sure you've heard many stories of US unions from Jimmy Hoffas days thru to Detroit auto unions getting people 30-45 USD an hour on factory floor and nowadays Amazon fighting unions every step of the way .. there is a huge Union culture in the US and many people will live and die by their union membership, its often passed down as tradition thru the generatioms .. tho it's prob not what it was even ten years ago ...

People like this are needed within the prison service as a reminder to new and existing officers that smuggling contraband is not worth the risk and also as a reminder as to what the consequences are. Having insight to situations like this would assist prisons in developing protocols to prevent putting prison officers at risk.

This is very close to home for me as I found myself in the same situation last year. No one will ever understand how stressful working the landings are unless you actually do it. Any other issues in life you have while working as a screw get magnified and snowball into something worse. I did my time too and regret everything I did but it gave me a whole life lesson and I’ve come out better from the other side. Respect Lee for speaking out and redemption will come. “None but ourselves can free our minds.” 🙏🏼

He's a good guy who started out just trying to help people, and seems to want to help people. I don't know about in the UK, but it makes you wonder about the types who actually do stick with the job over time. I know here in the US I haven't heard the greatest reports. I imagine a total thug might be able do deal with it over time, but not necessarily the type of person that would help anyone else on the inside.

Mentally I was strong while incarcerated, but upon release, I collapsed. I'm trying to get back to where I was right now. It's overwhelming to put it mildly. Yours is probably no different than his experience, why not give him a call. Start a group that might be the start of something better going forward. Suicide is a way out but it's final if your lucky. You could be left a cabbage in a hospital bed if not successful. Imagine the only thing working is your mind and you have thirty years of that ahead of you with no way out. Trapped in your guilty mind rewinding day after day. So easy it can happen, that's the gamble with suicide. Listen learn avoid. Good luck. 👊☘️

I was an officer for a year. The best thing i did was leaving. The training was as he said powerpoint production and nothing really on conveying contraband other than its your own morals that will stop you doing it and the threat of 10 years. The officers i worked with were so self centred and in their little cliques that its no surprise that some officers would do this.

You are most welcome, darling. We all make mistakes, but not all of us choose to use them to help others. That speaks volumes. Even just speaking so openly and with vulnerability, as a man, you are giving an incredible message to other young men, not just prison officers. Feeling shame is okay. Owning your mistakes is okay. Asking for help and forgiveness is okay. Your openness here will go further than you realise. Xx best of luck to you.

This guy is my best mate. He lives in Lancaster, United Kingdom, he gave up being a prison officer and became an electrician, gave that up and then he became a bus driver and now he's gone back being an electrician.

Good for him, this is actually a really nice story to hear. Sure he may have made ridiculous mistakes while he was a prison officer but hearing about how he rehabilitated himself was a pleasure to hear.

icl i think this is a systemic issue that pressured him into doing this. Notice how hes mentioning a lack of support that is in place and that he was on 18k a year. That aside in the situation of the guy who wanted to call his sick dad, im sure many many people would have taken up that offer
