Major, you don't realise how much I enjoy watching this with you. When the first seasons hit I watched it together with my teenage son & husband and we always had such fun. By the time 8th season dropped my now grown son was living abroad and my husband had passed 😢 I watched it with such mixed emotions. Now I get to watch it with you and it's fun and healing. Thank you , cherish your precious family 🙏🏻💚

I'm so sorry for the loss of your husband. My experience is very much different, but in some ways similar. I went through an ugly divorce from an abusive husband of 20 years. One late night my oldest daughter, knowing I love fantasy and history convinced me to watch "just one episode" of GoT. It was midnight. BUT any parent of teens or young adults knows you take your moments with them when you can. We ended up watching 6 episodes that night/morning. What started with just us grew to include my other kids and eventually their now partners. It was a Sunday night ritual. Not only that, but a cultural phenomenon. I cried after the last episode. Not because of the way it ended, but because it was the end of a family event. Now my daughter is married. My son lives in another state. My youngest getting ready to leave the home. It is a joy to watch others experience what we did. It feels like family.

I had a very similar experience with watching this series originally. My wife watched the first 3 seasons and finally convinced me to watch one as the lead up to season four approached. I was instantly hooked and was able to binge everything in time to watch the next 3 season with my wife. We were both in eager anticipation of season 7 when she unexpectedly died at the age of 47. Our 22 year old daughter moved back home to help me through the grieving process and we watched the remaining seasons together with a great sense of melancholy. I think it is one of the things that draws me to watching these reactions, so that I can sort of relive the times and joy I experienced watching with my wife.

Bran and Theon have some surprisingly emotional moments here considering how robotic Bran has been. I think they made Bran too cold in earlier eps so nice to see him slightly Bran like. Dany and Drogon are a team. You can see how in sync they are and how intelligent Drogon really is in battle.
@davidjones272
@davidjones272 Жыл бұрын
Bran certainly becomes less robotic over the course of the last 2 seasons, but that makes sense. Basically at the point where he becomes the 3 eyed raven he's exposed to a huge amount of information. He's overwhelmed emotionally and shuts himself off. Remember Bran isn't just seeing the past, he's getting glimpses of the future. He plans this battle so they can manoeuvre the Night King into a position where he's vulnerable. He's the one who gives Arya the dagger, he picks the position in the God's Wood etc. In doing so Bran knows he will be causing the death of tens, even hundreds of thousands of people. It takes a lot out of him. I've always thought that the reason why Bran was cold to Meera was that he wanted to make sure she wouldn't be at Winterfell, he was making sure she would live.

The camera cut from Sansa and Tyrion behind the wall to Jon coming out of hiding with his sword raised as the Ramin Djawadi score starts playing is cinematic gold. I always say this. The darkness throughout the episode is obviously frustrating but as someone with a little camera operating experience the shots during the climax sequence are straight eye porn.

I love the darkness. Battles like Helms Deep, you needed the light, because seeing the size of the orc army was what terrified you. In this battle, the darkness is part of the terror. The idea that there's something in that darkness that moves fast, doesn't feel pain, and is hard to kill is terrifying! The tension ramps up like crazy for me. That wall of wights coming out of the darkness makes me jump back every time. And Arya's thing in the library trying to be quiet is straight out of the walking dead!

I'm not much of a battle aficionado so I'm not that interested in the technical know hows of the different strategies and tactics of medieval siege battles that could've made this better. I'm also very mindful of theories that weren't paid off, like the Azor Ahoi angle. But from a purely sentimental perspective, this episode had me line and sinker. I'm more than lenient towards technical errors when a journey can get me this impassioned. Hats off to Alfie Allen, the range of acting he showed playing Theon is unbelievable. The music is enchanting. Ramin Djawadi's score is chef's kiss. The ambience of "the Night King slow walking through the wintery forest with the red hue of the Weirwood tree contrasting the blue hour twilight sky" is everything I had always imagined and some more.
@RyoHazuki224
@RyoHazuki224 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, from a tactical angle there were so many mis-steps. You had siege weapons out there, and yet barely used them but send out Dothraki first? Why wasn't there a line of archers out there, even if they didn't have enough dragonglass-tipped arrows, they could have used fire-tipped arrows and just light them up. And, at the point to where they were pushed back all the way until they had to light that trench on fire, why wasn't there rows of archers on the wall taking out as many as they could? They were just standing there waiting. The only thing I can think of is that they didn't have enough time to prepare their defenses since Edd came and said they will be here by night time. Perhaps they thought they had more time? But yeah, that part with Theon, as much as I hated the strategy, it gets me every time. The music and the tone of everything, they did hit that part right in the feels.
@SDG.12
@SDG.12 Жыл бұрын
@@RyoHazuki224 Thank you. That’s a pretty balanced critique, and I completely agree. There’s definitely things I would’ve done differently tactics wise. And to be fair, if we really put our history buff hat on, we can point out tactical flaws in Blackwater or Battle of the Wall too. People have different tastes. Like for example, I never thought not getting a Jon Night King fight was a big deal. If logistical accuracy is someone’s main thing, then I totally understand why they would have issues with the episode. For me, when I’m watching a TV show it’s mainly about the emotion it brings out from me. I think ASOIAF fans sometimes forget this is not an actual historical battle. At the end of the day it’s a battle against supernatural ice zombies. I've seen far worse hair-brained tactics in zombie movies and movies about Greece and Rome, with 10% the emotion.
@RyoHazuki224
@RyoHazuki224 Жыл бұрын
@@SDG.12 Yeah for sure. I mean we have to also remember that in terms of historical vs cinematic battles, this one weighs heavy on the cinematic side and so they went from the start to give you a narrative structure to the battle, even though it may fly in the face of most tactical logic. They want you to feel like whatever they did to win seem hopeless, they want you to have that dread and despair up until the very end. So, from a narrative perspective it doesn't make sense to make them have a super winning strategy and then just be like "Oh... well that was easy." We as viewers have the benefit of hindsight to look at everything from an outside perspective and say "this is what I would have done differently" and also to look at the fact that you're just dealing with mostly mindless zombies, and I think as nerds we've all thought about how we would defend ourselves in a zombie apocalypse, so we all thought to apply that to the characters on screen and be like "Come on, Jon haven't you ever seen The Walking Dead??" hahah

There are plenty of us, the silent majority. We just don't go around protesting & write up petitions that we enjoyed it & were quite satisfied with season 8. This episode got the 4th most "10" of "10" among all 76 GOT episodes on IMDB by voters. Only to be surpassed by The Battle of the Bastards, The Winds of Winter & The Rains of Castamere. All 3 happen to be ranked as the top 3 rated episodes among all GOT episodes. The haters made it a point to give many "1s" of "10" to this episode. The people that don't hate, usually rank this episode either the best or the second best.

The fan backlash was really born from episode 5&6, the controversial decisions D&D made when they wrapped up the series pissed people off .. The only complaints some people had about episode 3 was that it was literally to dark and poorly lit 🤷‍♂️, I still feel it should’ve been Jon who killed the Night King and ended the white walker threat.

What'll really screw with your mind is when you realize Bran gave Arya the dagger she used to kill the night's king. This episode is one of the best, most emotionally draining episodes of TV I’ve seen. It took a lot of beer for me to get through it. Theon’s final redemption and death makes me cry every time I see it. Beric’s death, where he looks almost Christ-like as he’s being stabbed is such a great use of imagery. The two pieces of Ned’s sword reunited to defend his keep is completely poetic. Arya saving the Hound and then the Hound saving Arya. Drogon shielding Daenerys as she mourns Jorah. Tyrion and Sansa’s facial expressions when they realize they’re about to die. It’s all just so good. I know that people are really critical of how the episode was lit, how the battle was staged, etc. but I just really enjoyed every part of this episode and I loved watching you react to it. The show runners of GoT decided they didn't want a lot of "magic" in their show so they left out quite a bit about the crypts. The Kings and Lords of Winter all have swords laid across their laps in the crypt to keep "vengeful spirits within the crypt". It's possible in the real book (Winds of Winter), when it comes out, that the Lords of Winter may actually serve as protection against the vengeful spirits (the wight walkers and wights) entering the crypt. Which would make sense then that they'd go down there. I actually think it would be quite fun to see the Kings of Winter, including Ned Stark, being reanimated to fight against the Night King instead of for him.

Props to Jaqen Hagar, whom I still believe posed as Syrio, her dance sword instructor, because the many faced good sent him to find her and train her...like the 3 eyed Raven sent for Brandon. We never saw Syrio die and if you rewatch that scene after Arya runs away but stops to hear what's going on...you hear swords clanging. That, to me, seems like he picked up a sword and defended himself. The Hound said that Trant couldn't fight, so I think he didn't kill Syrio. Arya slit his throat and stuffed his mouth with rags, so he never got to get out what he was desperately trying to tell her. Jaqen accomplished what was necessary and gave her all she needed to learn, and the focused fire within to carry it out. Once she killed the Waif and was focused with conviction and said she was leaving...he knew she was ready. That's why the tiny smirk on his face and head nod. The Starks are magic (well, not Sansa). They were trusted by the Children of the Forest since the days of the first men and Andols. That may also be a good reason why there should always be a Stark at Winterfell. The name of the castle is an easter egg in itself. Their house slogan, "Winter is coming"....it all adds up to a foreshadowing of this dark night coming and taking place in that spot. Daenerys and her dragons played their part in the battle, but in the end, it had to be a Stark. Honestly, I thought that it would be Jon because of the build up of his whole story arc. I was glad that Arya got her big fish, but still....I wanted Jon to have that glorious win under his belt. Theon earned his honor back in such an amazing way. He died as an honorary member of the Stark family. Jon was raised as a Stark, and so he is a Stark. His values are their values, only he learned some things of the world to adjust to along the way. Him being raised as a northerner, with their values, is the main reason why he couldn't continue being Dany's lover. I know Ned was looking down on them and was so proud.

I enjoyed The Long Night. I cherished those moments with Theon and Bran, Jorah and Dany, Arya and Mellisandre, Sansa and Tyrion!! When Bran tells him "you're a good man" I lowkey tear up ngl. The first half is too dark with irritatingly shaky and rapid camera movements, but the second half is a lot less chaotic as the action settles down. I have a lump in the throat for the entirety of the closing scene. Theon's last stand, Bran and Night King staring face to face as the "The Night King" theme plays?! That's the stuff goosebumps are made of! There's naturally some things that I would've done differently but overall I enjoyed the episode. The next episode is usually considered the weakest one. For good reason as it has that terrible second half. But on the flip side I don't dislike the finale two episodes.
