Connor Bedard is the NHL’s highest touted prospect since Connor McDavid was drafted back in 2015. Projected to go 1st overall since he was granted exceptional status, Bedard was something special, a gem, a generational talent, the next Crosby, the next Ovechkin, the next McDavid, we've heard them all. I’m not going to lie to you I wasn’t always on board with the hype.

He has special skill with great intelligence and power. He isn't as fast as a McDavid, but his release point and trajectory of his shots are alien to the sheet. I don't worry about his size at all. Unlike when a player like Mitch Marner entered the league, this kid is built like an ox and has a strong frame. Nobody is going to tell him he needs to gain weight. He will find his way early on the power play. The next generational talent; Grab your popcorn

He's got that Colgate smile, a face that belongs on a teen magazine, and all the while he's a stone killer. The kid literally needs a sliver of space to unleash that bullet of a shot from anywhere. And what's more, he can anticipate that sliver and let it go before it opens.

I saw him play every game with the Pats here in Regina and I like to compare him to NHL HOF Marcel Dionne. They are about the same size, with Bedard being a little taller. I see Bedard succeeding in the NHL as did Dionne at that size and what did Dionne accomplish, he only scored over 700 goals. But it will take the team and his teammates to help Bedard succeed as it does for all players.

I am a HUGE diehard Penguins fan since they took Jagr in the 1990 draft. But, this kid is something, something extraordinary special. I am seriously thinking about buying a Hawks jersey with his name on it. And I only buy ones of my favorite players and where they have played (example, Jagr was never in L.A., so no L.A. jersey for me).

The thing that could never have been ignored about Bedard is that he significantly outperformed every player since Wayne Gretzky at the IIHF WJ this 2023. That tournament is always going to be a huge mile marker. But when classifying Bedard’s skill set by comparison with other current generationals, I think we’re going to fall short, simply because Bedards biggest skill is his brain. His hockey IQ is what really makes him special. And IQ, unfortunately, is not always a skill that lends itself to spectacle, like McD’s speed, Crosby’s cycle game, or, the power hands of MiniMac. Which means - aside from his shot, which we know is worthy of spectacle (but let’s face fact that if all he had was a shot, he’d be Austen Mathews the 2nd. But he not just the exceptional player that Mathews is, we think there won’t be another one of him for fifteen, twenty years.) - he is a cerebral type player who simply understands more of what is within the realm of possibility than the competition. Can’t wait to see how he blooms into a pro player.

The fact that THIS is what changed your mind is nuts. It’s not like he’s done crazier things than this over the last 2 years. No prospect has been this dominant since McDavid. That’s all that needs to be said to know why he’s compared to McDavid and Crosby. Not because of play style, but because of the sheer potential this guy has. People say the sky is the limit for some stars in the league. For guys like Bedard, the sky is only the beginning.

I've been a Hawks fan my entire life. When they acquired Patrick Kane in 07, there was quite a bit of hype over him as well, and I really thought that he would be a decent player, but not as great as he became. Time will tell with Bedard, but I would not bet against him eventually becoming one of the greatest players ever.
@BloggerMusicMan
@BloggerMusicMan 9 ай бұрын
I was sold on him when I watched the World Juniors the past couple years. Most of the players he was playing against were two or three years older than him, and he didn't just play as well as them, he was noticeably better than every single one of them every time he was on the ice. I thought he was the best 17-year-old player I've ever seen. Your comparison to Crosby is not a bad one. He's not as physical or as well-built in his lower body as Crosby. He doesn't excel down low and in the corners as much as Crosby. He's not as good defensively as Crosby was when he came in the league. But he's about the same height and he's not afraid of going to the front of the net or creating plays down low. He also has a similar playmaking ability and ability to read the play that Crosby does. The difference between them is that Bedard's shot makes him more dangerous than Crosby from outside the front of the net. He can score from anywhere in the offensive zone and he very adept at deception. Bedard is also really dangerous on an odd man rush, because you have to respect his shot, and his playmaking ability is also incredible, so you also have to worry about the pass.

A small creative player like him was beautiful to watch, but the game was for the hitters. @@dudelove69 one word … height. When it comes to scoring, height is everything. I’m not talking about top 10-15 in goal scorers in NHL I’m talking top 3-5 goal scorers in NHL. Height is crucial with all things being equal. Now there will be the odd guy thats shorter than 6’0 creep into the mix now and again, but they aren’t mainstays for multiple years. McDavid is just a shade under 6’2. Draisaitl is 6’2, Ovi is 6’3, Pasternak 6’1, Rantanen 6’4, Matthews 6’4. Guys I predict will keep rising in scoring. Tage Thompson 6’6, Jason Robertson 6’3, Matthew Tkachuk 6’3. But those consistent season after season top 3-5 scorers are always 6’1 plus. Bedard is what 5’9 or 5’10. Doesn’t fit the profile. He’ll put up points but will not be a top producing sniper in the NHL. I’m not against the kid. Truthfully I hope he does prove me wrong. Despite your analysis, there is nothing elite about any aspect of his skating. His biggest asset is his self confidence and willingness to compete. He’s mature. Crosby in his prime played in a league where there were 3-7 40+ goal scorers per season. Since the league changed it's focus on the rules making the game more speedy and less hooky/cross checky/interference like (since about 2020/21) there have been 15-20 40+ goal scorers per year (pro rate the shortened covid seasons). It's a different league now and 55-65 goal seasons are becoming the norm for the top goal scorers. There are 10 or so guys, who when a little extra lucky or just having a career type season can be in that range (3-4 of them rotating at a time, when before only one or two had a chance)
