Fire Ants have one of the most painful insects bites on the planet, and during a military survival training program, while hiding out in what I thought was a secure position, I stumbled upon a fire ant nest and was swarmed. I had to fight with every muscle in me not to scream and give away my position, by the hundreds of fire ants bites could have killed me.

I live in Southern Georgia, in the U.S. The city I live in seems to be a "hot pocket." I lived in Atlanta for about 15 years and I thought THAT was hot... But here, during the late spring, all through Summer, and deep into Fall it's common to get days near or just over 100... In the shade... I used to say that it was 'Africa Hot!' here... Well, about 2 years ago, our department (at the university) got three graduate students all from Africa. They showed up at the beginning of Summer. One day I asked them, "What do you think of the heat here? Does this seem bad to you or???" They smiled and chuckled and all said, "Oh, this is NOT bad. Not bad at all!" And they MEANT it.... DANG! I guess it's all relative.

@@pikster2155 There is a tribe, that literally makes people wear bullet ants gloves with dozens of them inside. They call it a trial of manhood. Some outsiders tried it and had to be hospitalized after some time, but they handled it for a while and none died. A human body can take extreme amounts of pain. It all depends on the circumstances and the person.

I have PTSD from being swarmed by ants.. I have no memories of the direct attack, but I do remember a shoe that had thousands swarming all over & in the shoe. My father told me he heard me screaming in the front yard, turns to see me crouched in one of those large mounds they build. The ones that are fun to poke with sticks... To this day if I get more than two ants biting me, or even think I'm surrounded, I get the sensation of stings all over my body. ... I'll flail around & rip off my clothes even if there's nothing on me.

One time I bought a shirt and a pair of pants from the mall and tried it on to show my cousin. Turns out my closet was full of ants so ofc the shirt and pants. They were black clothes so I couldn’t really see. I put it on and felt a sharp pain on my Burt cheek and said “something is poking me” then I started feeling it all over my body. Then I remembered I’m allergic to fire ant stings :(

When I was young I was on a vacation in my country's province my grandmother told me that dont eat food in our guest room because tons of giant ants will swarm me if I eat food there, I listened but the next day my father bought us food and i put a plastic bag on the bed of the guest room, there was no food there just small ketchup sashe and thats all. I went to my fathers room and I stayed there and took a nap. Once i woke up I went to the guest room and since i just woke up I was tired and didnt have my glasses on i play on my gadget for a bit then once I was fully awake i felt lots of bites on my right leg i looked and i saw hundreds of ants biting my leg i was screaming and trying to get them of my leg my father heard my scream and he asked if anyone put food there i thought and thought of the ketchup sashe and i guessed that was the thing that attracted the ants my father took care of the problem and that was one day of my life that I would never forget

Here in Texas, getting swarmed by fire ants is a normal summer experience.

I have accidentally stepped on a fire ant nest and was attacked. I realize early enough to use a high pressure hose to wash the ants off. Luckily at my friend's house and his parents were both are and were paramedics for our state. So I got treatment right away. Fun fact apparently water mix with chlorine in a ratio like that in a large pool helps some people.

Not a veteran, but me and my dad are historical reenactors and had a similar experience. One time when we were doing a tactical engagement, and we were hiding behind a log while watching OpFor scouting around our position in their vehicles. I looked down to grab my canteen out from a pouch and to my and to my horror, I had found me and my dad's pants were swarming with fire ants, dozens if not hundreds of them making their way up our uniform. I alerted my dad and we had to quickly break away from our position and retreat while frantically wiping off all the ants. Some made it inside my uniform and made their way to may neck and arms and I flipped. I quickly tore off my webbing gear and the top half of my battle dress off wiping dozens of those biting little turds off. Luckily I had only received no more than a couple dozen bites across my arms and neck, and my dad received none at all. However, knowing I was allergic and that I would have a localized reaction across the locations of the bites soon , I had to take benedryl I stashed with my kit to prevent major swelling from taking place. Fortunately, it wasn't too bad and I was able to push through it. There was also another time, when our CO was giving us a briefing and he wasn't aware that he had stepped in an ant pile had dozens swarming up his pant leg as well. I had to be the one to call it out amongst the group and some of us had to help get those little sumbitches off. Gotta love those evil little things 🙄

I lived in Florida as a kid. I had over 500 bites from fireants in two separate unfortunate moments. I basically was playing in a sandbox on one occasion and the other, I had accidentally sat on an underground nest. It is the worst burning sensation ever.

When I was a kid, my parents would occasionally take me to see my Grandparents in Florida. They lived on a golf course and had a large backyard with a pool. I was outside one day playing catch with my Dad and in the process of trying to catch the ball, I tripped over my own foot and fell backwards into a fire ant nest. I was wearing normal clothes, so it didn't take long for me to get covered in the ants. I don't remember much more of what exactly happened aside from pain, being told to jump into the pool, taking a bath, and going to the doctor. Definitely a very painful experience.

My cousin actually put fire ants in my sleeping bag and I had to go to the emergency room just in case I had an allergic reaction to the venom. I am extremely thankful that I did not have an allergic reaction as this was a different and more lethal species of fire ant. It was actually of a whole different genus called “Myrmica”. These did not come to the United States from South America and instead came from Europe. It was honestly the 8th most horrifying experience with ants I had ever had. I am actually keeping the exact same species of ant that stung me and they keep me on my toes. With the ant hibernation season now over, I’ll have to deal with more angry, voracious, and bloodthirsty ants. It is going to be an absolute nightmare...

When my wife was 3 she fell into a huge fire ant best near Dallas as a child. She nearly died from the allergic reaction. The ants went into EVERY orifice. Bites up her nose & down her throat, her eyeballs etc. She is glad we live far enough north in Missouri where we don't have them....yet. She prays we never will.
