That old “Eat less, move more” to lose weight was all a GP would say to my mom who had painful arthritis and an under active thyroid. She spent a lot on Weight Watchers ready meals, hurt herself as she struggled to exercise and barely lost weight. GP would tell her to lower her calories further. Her thyroid worsened and put her on a cocktail of more medications over the years. 2 years ago, I got her on keto and she lost enough weight to get her off blood pressure, aspirin and cholesterol pills. Thank you Dr Berry for all your information.

@@sylviaa.1847 she still takes her thyroid tablet and the doctor said it would be the last med to try and take her off as her thyroid apparently no longer works without it. Still she takes Diclofenic anti inflammatories for arthritis unfortunately and because of that, he prescribes her an antacid tablets so she has a bit of trouble digesting her food. Believe it or not, she did feel better once on Keto and off the initial meds but obviously, the doctor hasn’t monitored her at all for over a year. She’s come along way though.

In 2019 I lost 55 of my 85 pounds living in a recliner for 18 weeks recovering from shoulder surgery. I did nothing but focus on living keto which my doctor suggested I do to avoid diabetes. Yes, my forward thinking doc suggested it, I reversed pre diabetes and lost weight doing absolutely zero exercise. I still live keto, both shoulders are fix so I weight train plus I walk 3 miles a few days a week with a weighted vest. I’m 54 and feeling better than ever. The only thing I do is walk. That's only for tone, get my lymph nodes cleaned, and strengthen my heart. Sometimes I will kick up the incline and speed on the treadmill for a little spice because I own my own business and am chained to my computer. Most people don't get enough movement due to our lifestyles now. You do need to move around for health, but it doesn't need to be crazy. That's why studies have come out that walking 30 minutes a day works just as well as cardio for health. Just move. The crazy stuff is only needed if you want to be built like Superman or Gina Carano.

If you want to try exercise, look into a rebounder. I bought a really cheap elastic band rebounder from Amazon; you donʻt have to go all out and get the German-engineered $800+ rebounder (but you could...). Iʻve been watching and reading comments in rebounder videos for the past few days and there was one commenter who said he was diagnosed 20, 30 years ago that heʻd eventually be in a wheelchair due to back injury from an accident, but because he immediately got on a rebounder, heʻs reversed that diagnosis and is healthy and strong. So many other amazing testimonials. I bought mine several years ago and finally...itʻs time to start actually using it. You seriously donʻt have to do it more than five, ten minutes a day to get some amazing benefits. I bet it would help your back!

I am 63 with severe osteoarthritis in several areas of my spine. I have been strict keto for 4 years. Besides low carb helping decrease inflammation and the subsequent weight loss, what has helped my spine immensely is yoga. As long as I go to yoga class, 60 minutes 5-6 days a week, I have no back pain. Plus, my flexibility in my back has never been better. I am also acquiring an increase in my strength. Prior to yoga I was going to the chiropractor 3 days a week and deep tissue massage weekly, along with taking Motrin and using a CBD oil just to try and control the pain. You may want to consider trying yoga to see if it helps.

No breads no snacks no cakes. The running an exercise stayed consistent until week 13 I went from 198 lbs to 175 lbs in 5 weeks because of cutting carbs. Likewise, everyone in our platoon lost weight. We all were wondering why our clothes didn't fit anymore. Moral of the story, you can exercise your life away but if you don't cut your carbs you will maintain the fat.

You forgot to mention those of us with chronic fatigue. There's only so much energy that we have to expend on a daily basis. If we blow it all on exercise, we have nothing left in the bucket to spend on things like household chores, cooking healthy meals (hello, fast food!), shopping, playing with kids/grandkids, etc.. I've always said that weight loss is 90-95% what goes in your mouth, and only 5-10% exercise, with exercise only helping to build muscle and keep your heart strong. It's more for overall health than it is weight loss. People think they can have that Burger King Whopper and just work out to burn it off. They don't realize that in order to "burn" enough calories to offset it, they'd have to do the equivalent of the Boston Marathon!

Secondly because I want a healthy mental relationship with excersize. I dont want a vicious circle of "oh I can eat this and run it off!". Then, I look at at what is best for my body introducing excersize steadily to build a routine.

At age 55, I'm back to where I was physique and weight wise 30 years ago. Lost over 40 pounds in 8 months, A1c down to 5.4, BMI back to normal first time in nearly 20 years and body fat down from 24 to 13%! Still stunned at the results. Better yet, I can train more effectively (joint pain reduced significantly) and am actually regaining strength in some excercises! Thank YOU Dr. Berry for spreading the word and keep up the great work!

I started walking around 10,000 steps when I was obese. It was difficult for me to walk around so I broke up my walking into 30 mintues into 4 times a day. I also started strict ketogenic diet and saw amazing results. Lost 25lbs just walking, when I went to keto I lost another 40lbs then did keto/carnivore diet and OMAD. I lost another 15lbs. I have kept my weight off for years now. Also I had Samsung health and cronometer to keep my diet and exercise in check.

I agree. There's this concept that carrying around excess fat is caused by the sins of gluttony and sloth, and the way to atone for those sins is calorie restriction and exercise. With society having that idea about weight management, it is very common for anyone carrying around excess fat to see exercise as punishment.

This is so true! Both are important features of a healthy person, but the exercise is really a whole different thing than weight loss. The food and drink are the drivers for weight loss and weight gain, exercise is for building muscle and cardiovascular stuff. It's all about what your goal is at the time. Fasting and diet are #1 for weight loss (and walking imo)

What I found is, that I automatically eat WAY better when I have a sporty lifestyle. I crave fats and protein instead of sugars. I don’t drink Softdrinks or alcohol anymore. I eat what my body tells me to eat to build that strength and cardio... So for me, sport is VERY important for a healthy lifestyle and weightloss. Im my own, personal opinion it also has to do with a picture of yourself. If you see yourself as an sporty person, why on earth should you feed yourself with trash? So by doing sports, you (or I) trick yourself into better thinking without efforts - wich leads to a better diet. So for me it really is the diet and the sport

Early last summer, months pre-keto, I exercised to lose weight while practicing a "good" SAD and I did lose weight, almost 20 pounds, then it stopped so I increased my exercise and saw my weight start to go up. So as the old definition of insanity being doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result goes, I decided to give keto a shot. I continued to exercise, only more casually and less intense and not for weight loss. Well on keto I lost 40 pounds in about a month and a half along with my abdominal fat and 6 months later the weight is still gone and I've still been living the keto lifestyle, not for weight loss but for better health.

I exercise and I use that term loosely as walking is my primary exercise. I do resistance training also. My primary motivation for these workouts are stress reduction. The more stressful the day, the harder/longer I work out. It seems to work for me. Also, it demonstrates that my carnivore lifestyle has actually increased my energy/activity levels. I try to hit 11K steps/day and most days 90%+ I hit 15K. I also use resistance training 4+ days a week. I must admit, that I also look at maintaining a caloric deficit. I'm battling loose skin. So I'm supplementing collagen, 0mad (20hours), and attempting to tighten it up with a combo or autophagy and muscular hypertrophy, It appears to be working but requires dedication and patience.

Yes!!! This belief is firmly ingrained in our minds as fact - through advertisements, friends, family, school, so it at first it seems ridiculous to question the notion. I was a competitive runner who fell apart due to eating the wrong things. At the end of high school, my parents started buying low fat/fat free everything (thinking it would keep me from gaining weight after puberty) and my diet switched to more sugar. I quickly gained thirty pounds and tortured myself eating less and moving more, which was futile. I was hungry all the time, and exhausted - also having thyroid/hormonal problems. Only when I did what felt like the opposite - eating keto, lots of fats and proteins that my body craved, and not worrying about exercising for a while - did I lose all that weight and feel energetic enough to exercise again and not have it be torture. I have told my parents about my experiences and insights with diet and exercise, but it doesn't make sense to them. At least I know how to take care of myself now and have recovered my health.

He was write I also have arthritis in both knees so can no longer do the hour long workouts but I know movement is necessary to help with arthritis. I took up Tai Chi for a year (costly classes) this helped and no more knee pain but stress eating didn't help with weight loss. I agree exercise helps but diet is more important.

Great message Ken. Here's a twist. Where people wrongly assume "Exercise leads to weight loss" (a false assumption you correct), I argue that the reverse is true "Weight loss leads to exercise.". When someone loses weight, their power to weight ratio improves, movement becomes easier. Joint inflammation and pain typically subside. Physical embarrassment declines. Confidence to move improves. Energy pathways improve. They have more energy for physical activity. This also applies to overweight children and teens. We hear statements like "They need to go play sport." Well the truth is that metabolically deranged young people are hungry all the time, lack the energy pathways, and simply don't feel inclined to going outside to play sport. They may have even tried it. If you want overweight kids to exercise, help them lose weight first.

I do a lot of cycling and know from personal experience that I have never lost a pound from exercise. My belief is this: if you are able to lose weight through exercise you would probably qualify to enter the Olympics! My cycling buddy has used exercise to lose weight for the last 30 years. He wasn't willing to go low carb. He exercises so much that I gave up riding with him as a "lost cause"! He was up to 525 miles each week plus walking, weights and swimming. I knew that exercise did absolutely nothing for him. I guess it just increased his appetite. I had a major eating disorder and low carb is the only thing that has given me control over my eating. Keep up the great work.

Where I am the gyms are still in pandemic lock down, so I started walking for free more since my Liver Dr put me on a low carb diet. I never thought exercise was for loosing weight, I thought it was for helping with eliminating shortness of breath & improving balance. In 4 months I’ve lost about 50 lbs (which I attribute to low low carb eating, limiting the hours of eating to an 8 hour window, & not eating when not hungry - sometimes skipping the last meal of day), loosing about 2 lbs a week, which my Dr reassured me was right. I’ve never been a runner & don’t plan on starting now. Walking is doing what I want for now. Thx for your videos. So glad I stopped drinking soda pop ten years ago, or this would’ve been too hard to keep going.
