This music style was called TRIP HOP, so it's supposed to put you in a sort of sonic trance by using a repetitive melody, methodical instrumentation, and the complete lack of sudden stridencies. These songs conjure up moods instead of moves. Hope this comment has been helpful to you.

The first music video (that wasn’t just a one camera live music video) to be shot in one take, on the streets of LA. They definitely didn’t have a care in the world and paid for a local gang to offer protection while they were on the streets. Their output is beautiful, scary, funky and dark. Often at the same time. They also have a strong reggae background and frequently work with reggae star Horace Andy. The singer here, Shara Nelson, also released 2 solo albums with great songs like Friendly Fire and Keeping Out The Cold. Her other 2 tracks on this album, Daydreaming and Safe From Harm are worth a listen. As is Protection from their next album of the same name, and the deeper tracks like Angel, Man Next Door, Karmacoma, Live With Me or Pray For Rain.

When they come to write the history of pop music, Massive Attack will be up there with the Beatles. Three lads from Bristol in the late 1980s join together to create this sound, this AMAZING sound. They are grossly underrated now, but they are better than Pink Floyd, they will be recognised one day as the greatest British band after the Beatles. Unfinished Sympathy, Protection and Teardrop are the greatest songs written in the last 40 years.

One of the greatest songs of its genre and of its era. ❤️ I love the part toward the end where she crosses the road, doesn’t look for cars and just leaves everything to destiny. Powerful stuff. It’s her “ok... this is it” moment.

That's really not true. It would take a very long time to listen to the hits of the 60-90's we are just scratching the surface. It will be a good number of years. I would suspect he blows up and finds another niche to start moving into. Smart, talented, and very genuine appeal.

that's right, and a very clever one too as the song has a symphonic sound to match the name. In the song, her love is unfinished and she is looking for a kind of sympathy from her lover. Very, very clever. This song demonstrates Massive Attack's combined intellectual and musical talents in one song.

Takes me right back this track. Yes I'm "old", I was 17 when this released and was a standout track then, still is now. I bought this on 12" vinyl. Loved this track. When I started driving that year I copied it to cassette and played it in my first car. Music has such power to take you back in time to how you felt at that time and it does this for me now, at nearly 50 years old.

Great song though. I reminds me hard days in South Central nad Compton, LA Riots and other LA stuff. This is also recorded in master shot. Video was shot West Pico Boulevard January 1991.

Apart from the fact that they both used classical music, there's nothing similar between this song and The Verve ... The Verve were Brit pop while Massive Attack were Trip Hop and both the melodies and the beats were totally different. I saw Massive Attack live a few years back and they were still amazing and played out with this song - Probably the best Trip Hop song ever, an absolutely beautiful masterpiece.

This song is MASSIVE Jay, recorded in 1990 & released in 1991 so it’s 30 years old, it’s been voted the best dance track of all time in many polls & the vocalist (Shara Nelson) sang on a couple of their tracks, they usually use guest vocalists in other songs as well as themselves, check them out you won’t be disappointed, trip-hop at its finest 👏🏻

What a tune, Hey ! One of the greatest singular Songs of all time. First time I saw Massive Attack it was as the "Massive Attack SoundSystem" in 1995. It was like 6 hours of Massive Attack and their Musical Associates.
