Ever since I was a kid I’ve been fascinated with lists and data. We’re talking about a child who would spend hours arranging CD racks into alphabetical order when I should have been out speaking to girls. This obsession has carried on into adulthood, manifesting itself particularly strongly in a decade’s long obsession with the IMDB list of the top 250 movies of all time. This is a list that I have returned to again and again over the past 15 years or so, but only during the last two years have I endeavored to work my way through it and watch every single damn film on there. And now, with the viewing of Akira Kurosawa’s classic fable Ikiru, I have finally done it…

I love it for what it is because it’s a genuine attempt to do something really difficult, which of course people are going to get mad at, but remember this list wasn’t made by one person, rather is a culmination of millions of ratings from different users, so as much you may disagree, it’s as accurate as it gets, especially in such a subjective art form such as film

On Tuesday, I finally, FINALLY, finished my own challenge : watching all 995 movies known to have entered the IMDB Top250... This was a huge 5 and a half year project, and I felt quite emotional as I saw the credits rolling at the end of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse and exited the movie theater. It's hard to express what one feels after completing a project that you spent a decent chunk of your life on.

That is an incredible effort. I've looked back at lots of the older versions of the list and there are some really surprising entries in there. Well done on getting there!

While myself am only at 42% completion of the Top 250 movies, I still already feel that what in lacking mostly of the list really wouldn't be my taste, or just really old. But knowing you technically watched the (250 audience rated) best movies in existence already, has to be a weird feeling

I watched all the IMDB too 250. I also watched every Oscar best picture nominee. Which was over 560 movies at the time. I stopped after 2019 since they didn’t make many movies during Covid. So I could recommend doing that list next.

Love this. People like you are my kind of people. The 250 gets a bad rep from the people I love who aren’t about to watch all two hundred and fifty films, but I adore it. I’m on 216/250 currently, and to be honest films not on the list/IMDb Top 250 TV series keep getting in the way! But a part of me wants to do a sizeable chunk this year, we’ll see. How many times has something you haven’t seen entered the list and you’ve had to go back and watch it? 😛. When I watch all 250, I’ve been thinking I’ll just watch the ones on the edge/outside it, i.e films on 8.0 and 8.1.
@highonfilms
@highonfilms Жыл бұрын
The IMDb Top 250 getting a bad rep is just ignorance. Sure, it has some outrageously ordinary films but mostly IMDb's list is a great spot to introduce yourself to cinema of all the worlds. One can wrap it up and go in those directions, to find much better gems. But why be so hateful towards the signboard that tells you to go in all those directions. :)

Thanks for the feedback. Much appreciated. I found the last 20 or 30 so the hardest bit as it tended to be films that I'd put off seeing. In the end, however, some of those last films became my favourites on the whole list. Good luck in your quest!

For all my life, I realized that all the films I truly love and have inspired me to create and make films going forward, are all on the Top 250 on ImDB. Movies that are not on the Top 250 are still amazing and inspiring but My favourite films ever somehow end up going to the Top 250. Most recently “John Wick Chapter 4. “ I’d say if there are cinephiles like myself, this list is amazing to analyze film as a whole.

I have 16 more to see but I'm on 3 weeks holidays so I think I'll watch them to get my 250 ticked off . I think it's pretty solid list as there were only a few ' classics' that I hated. Such as ' Tokyo story ' and ' bicycle theives'' . You struggled through " Gone with the wind " which I loved but I really can't stand animation so there was alot if that I really had to force down . Too heavily represented I felt. But that's art . Different tastes.
@robsceneblog

@@twomindz79 Tokyo Story is better than every Kurosawa movie, even Rashomon. Seppuku is a bad movie. Funeral Parade of Roses, Kwaidan, Sansho the Bailiff, Human condition trilogy, Ran, Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Harakiri are few movies that come close to Tokyo Story. You hated it and thus don't have a say on it. I like every movie and thus have a better say.

I want to do something like this. I have been watching a LOT of films since 2017 (so about 6 years). It is a bucket-list endeavor for me, for sure. Some of my favorites are: Almost Famous Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Juno Wall-E The Sound of Music I usually choose a topic and watch a bunch of films within that theme. For instance, I watched a lot of war films. My favorite in that genre is Downfall. There are a lot of great war films but Downfall really stood out to me. I also really liked Born on the Fourth of July. I have also seen a lot of films on teen pregnancy and I love Juno. If I had to choose a runner-up, probably Riding in Cars with Boys. I also watched a lot of films on infidelity. My favorite among those was Damage. My favorite time-travel film is Primer. My favorite LGBT film is Brokeback Mountain. Among engagement/wedding films my favorite is Father of the Bride (1991). I also like to choose which film is my favorite within that genre. Favorite romantic comedy: When Harry Met Sally (runner-up: Pretty Woman) Scariest horror film: Vivarium Favorite documentary: Jesus Camp (2006); Wordplay (2006) Best comedy: Best in Show Best adventure film: Into the Wild Best slapstick comedy: Happy Gilmore Best mind-benders: The Platform; Being John Malkovich

The list is quite strange. It seems to me that some films are positioned very high because they are recent. The time hasn't yet done its work. For example I'm not sure that in 20 years Avengers: Infinity War will still be the list. Being French I find the french's film in the list very cliché. But the list is interesting to have a start.

Gone With The Wind I'd happily rewatch, though preferably not in one sitting. Stuff like Before Sunrise/Sunset, Into The Wild, Donnie Darko, The Sting or Paris, Texas would be in the rather have a root canal than rewatch from the English only 250 list. I know it's all subjective though.
