After watching it again and reading some reviews, I really think that this show was made for fans of the book (duh) haha I read a review that mentioned how for the SoC characters, their backstories is what makes them so compelling and rich, but we couldn't get much of that backstory in the show because it would have spoiled later seasons - so I think they worked with what they could and did a good job. I would have appreciated a longer show though, I think things felt a little rushed and I would have liked to sink a little deeper into certain scenes/characters. ALSO a review I read brought up that Shadow and Bone is probably the weakest of Leigh's work (no hate! she just gets so much better as a writer as she progresses in the series) so if we get a season 2, hopefully the show will also be deeper and improve :) But overall, as a huge fan, I wasn't disappointed and I'm excited to see it progress! What do you think?

I would ✨love✨ to see them adapt the plot from SOC/CK at some point!! To do it justice though I think it would mean having Alina's plot take a backseat because there is so much going on in the SOC series. But damn would it be good to see all those action scenes on the screen 👏👏

also, I read somewhere (but someone pls confirm) that the budget for S&B was a lot less than other series like GoT, so they decided to up the quality of the episodes and reduce the number of eps to 8. Maybe if S&B performs really well, Netflix might make further seasons longer!

@Umamaheswari G I’m not a book reader and I didn’t find Kaz useless at all. He’s legit the most interesting character of the show. Of course, getting to know his other skills under youtube comment section is interesting, thank you for that 👍, but I kinda glad the show saved some surprises and cool moments for later seasons (let’s hope there’s more). As of now, he’s been shown as a mastermind and that’s not useless. The man even faced off with the Darkling and survived. Again, getting to know the fan’s perspective is interesting. It shows how much greater of a character he could be. I just want to point out that for some non-book readers our there, Kaz is a total badass and nowhere near useless.
@scythe7823

@Umamaheswari G True but I liked that they showed his skills like deception, his observation skills, those kinds of things instead. How smart his brain is, rather than a skill that requires luck from being born Grisha or the more tangible stuff the other Crows have. Even in the books, we don’t really get in depth view of how he picks locks because it’s just such a small aspect of everything else Kaz is good at.

as someone who didn't read the books before watching the series, I still really liked it. There was a lot of stuff that I didn't understand about the details of the world that I'm sure people who read the books knew, but most of that info didn't interfere with the story telling and I actually liked that because it didn't feel like I was being spoon fed exposition. It felt like the writers had a story they wanted to tell and I was just along for the ride (which I loved). I started reading six of crows a few days and I'm really enjoying it so far! :)

The way that the relationship between alina and kirigan progressed so fast, definitely made it seem more like a pure lust thing for Alina to me, rather than her falling for him. In that way it made sense for me that she turned on him that quickly and i liked that it in that way it also didnt take too much away from the connection between her and Mal. So although it did feel a bit rushed, that is kind of how i justify it.

Felt all the feels. I watched it in a single sitting too. It was everything I wanted, and more. My fav moments: 1. EVERYTHING Jesper. I loved his character in the books but I loved Kaz more, but Kit Young seriously stole the show. "Just ask. Just ask!" "They're not going to believe I'm this old." 2. Milo!!! 3. The ships: Kaz and Inej. Nina and Matthias. Alina and Mal. I know a lot of people said there wasn't as much slow burn as the books, but I understand that they only have 8 episodes to show the connection and that they probably need to show some love lines to bring new viewers in. 4. Love the changes they made to the characterisation. Like how Alina didn't immediately fall for Darkling and Mal didn't go off with Zoya and ignore Alina. 5. Our book lines: "We need you. I need you." and "Fine, make me your villain." And so much more!!!

I really enjoyed watching it!! The one thing that I didn't like AT ALL was The Darkling told Alina his name was Aleksander.... he told her SO early, SO casually, and with other people around!! It ruins the whole thing with Alina only knowing his name and the mini storyline with that. And, they kinda can't do the same ending as they did in the books (well I guess they can) but it won't have the same impact since everyone just knows his name now.

I also wished there were more episodes and they had certain scenes weighted differently in terms of impact, but the thing that drives me so much towards these two series is the characters if I'm honest. I thought they did so good with establishing the characters in a way that I was hoping so much for and because these two stories are so complex in terms of story lines and characters, it may have been a good thing to combine the two just to get all these backstories started. Tbh I felt like Alina and the Darkling made about the same amount of sense in the show as the book? Maybe more bc Ben Barnes? I read shadow and bone pretty recently and I remember their first kiss coming out of NOWHERE. Also my one issue with the show was that the Nina and Matthias plot line just didn’t tie in to the main story very much and always felt really out of place? Like I love them and their scenes together but I think it would’ve been better to leave it out and explore it in later seasons. Then it would have had more time to develop (bc it also felt somewhat rushed to me). And leaving it out would let the main story of this season have more breathing room too.

yeah it was a bit but i think they had a lot more interaction and the darkling was a lot more manipulative (its implied in the show but not really shown?) so the book relationship was a lot stronger imo!

I just finished the first book (after this series I’m reading all of them) and is so much worse in the book, she’s always saying how he doesn’t talk to her and then when he kisses her I thought I was reading it wrong case it made NO SENSE. Like she doesn’t even know he’s name in the book. Also all the characters fro SaB were way more likable in the series, Alina being half shu actually maters and in the books she just so full of self hate and I’m just tired of all main characters being like that (although is valid) I loved her so much in the series. And Mal was perfect, in the books was hard to like him, in the series he just does the right thing all the time the book Maly could never. (Sorry I just finished the book and have no one to talk to, and thanks for given a space I could even if no one reads it💕)

My opinion: 1. The best book adaptation I have seen, let's just say that at the beginning. 2. Characters really look good and they do resemble the characters from the books, especially the crows. 3. Darklina relationship was rushed, they needed at least 2 more episodes for that, AT LEAST. 4. I would have to say, as a book reader the first episode was amazing and up until episode 5 I really liked how it was going, the other were weaker to me. 5. Kaz started great, his aura, acting, these were really amazingly done. But him in the end, we know that Kaz is not soft, he would never say some things he said by the end of the show, not yet, at least. 6. I really liked the relationship between Nina and Mathias, they really did justice to the books. 7. Scenography, music, the aeshtetics of the show were amazing. 8. The beginning was great for me, but can't tell how it was for the non readers, I suppose that I would be confused if I haven't read the books. I would say that my rating is: 8/10, I am amazed by the book adaptation after all.

Kit Young as Jesper is really the standout performance for me but everyone is great. I watched the show before reading the books and honestly I like the pacing in the show between Alina and the darkling better than in book 1. I felt like we didn’t see them together until the scene with Bahgra book 1, before that he kinda just left her to fend for herself while being off busy with general business whereas in the show he seemed to keep her a lot closer and I could tell he was interested in a way that it took a while to get to in the books. I also loved the fountain scene in the show and how proactive Alina was about trying to impress him and not just being along for the ride in the show. I was bummed that the darkling gave out his name so easily in the show after reading the books tho! The other main difference I felt was how much better mal was in the show- I was shocked reading the books and realizing that he came off like a total jerk book 1 and a whiner book 2 😭 now the show made me love him instantly so that was a shock when I read the books, I guess that was partly do to directional changes the writers made and also partly due to having more perspective from different characters and not just Alina’s pov.

Thank you for not spoiling anything from the books as I have not read them. I binge watched this show twice this past weekend and considering to binge it yet again a 3rd time, if that's any indication as to how attached I became to the material really quick. I came in to this show almost totally blind, only thing I've seen was the first Teaser Trailer that they released back in Feb (I think?). I was binging The Nevers on HBO about 2 weeks ago when my cousin's wife recommended S&B to me. And even then it took me another week to even start the show. I'm glad that I did. I'm in a remote area with no bookstores and will have to drive an hour away to the nearest Barnes and Noble so I can find the entire Grishaverse books as I really want to know what happens next.

Its definitely made for fans of the book, but as someone who went in with no knowledge of the Grishaverse, they did a really good job of pulling you in and building the world around you. I watched it, read the book, and then watched it again and geeked out over the little things (especially the things in the Ravkan langauge, like the Apparat calling Alina Sol Koroleva after the winter fete) that I missed the first time through. I'm into Six of Crows now and seeing Nina and Mattias' meeting played out on screen was just perfect.

I found out about the Grishaverse a few months before the trailer for the series was announced (which is when I found out a show was being made lol), so I thought I’d read at least the first book of S&B and of SoC before the show premiered, but I didn’t, and the only knowledge on the overall plot I had was: Alina’s kind of annoying, everyone hates Mal, and the Darkling is evil but hot, so we root for him; as for SoC I only knew it followed 5 or 6 characters and it had to do with a heist. So I pretty much went into the show knowing or expecting nothing other than to come out loving Ben Barnes even more. But, boy, was I in for a surprise! I binged it in one sitting, rewinding every Darklina and Ben Barnes scenes (he’s such an amazing actor! 😍) multiple times cause they gave me all the feels in the world, and I absolutely LOVED the show! I feel like it doesn’t matter if people haven’t read the books cause the storyline and plot are incredibly clear from episode one and it’s explained and expanded through the rest of the episodes. I legitimately cannot wait for a second season to be announced, filmed and released, but that’ll probably happen in a year or maybe even two 😓
