Top Gun Maverick is one of those rare occurrences when the sequel isn’t a crappy continuation of the first story, they actually put effort into it and it turned out amazing. It’s hard finding those these days, things like the Star Wars Sequels and even some of the post Marvel Endgame films are starting to get worse

04:16 The aircraft in question is not an SR-71 Blackbird. The aircraft that appeared in Top Gun: Maverick is a fictional version of the SR-71's successor, referred in the movie as SR-72 "Dark Star". What made the plane extremely realistic was the fact that they have worked with Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works Division, the company responsible for bringing SR-71 Black Bird to life (alongside several legendary aircraft in the US Military) to create a 1:1 model of what the plane would have looked like in real life.

I've actually flown the Super Hornet and i can tell you that we do sometimes put a hand up on the canopy. We use it for leverage to push back in order to see further back over the should. We can easily fly the jet with either hand on the stick. Not saying Tom Cruise was in the front flying, he was not, but that is not something that can be only done from the back seat. There is so much realism in this movie, its good to see!

one of the coolest details i've seen in this movie is at the climbout part of the mission. There is a very brief shot of the pilots pulling the pinky (paddle) switch on the stick before pulling it. That switch will disengage the G-Limiter, which allows them to pull past the 7.5g limit rooster mentions earlier in the film.

Another detail I noticed: during the carrier scene before they take off, Rooster confronts Maverick just before they get on their Hornets, mirroring the earlier training scene where it was the reverse. Now if you noticed in the background shot of Rooster his aircraft has the name “JOHN MATHESON” underneath the nose wheel cover, likely to indicate the name of the respective crew chiefs of the fighter jet. However at one point Rooster covers a portion of the name such that it reads “THESON”

I think Top Gun was on repeat in our day room while I was in the military. I waiting quite a long time to watch Maverick. I think I was terrified of what they may have done to a movie that I have so many memories attached to. I finally watched it and I enjoyed every thought out detail carried over from the original. They knew people care a lot of about Top Gun and were very responsible with it.
@squirrelsinjacket1804

I just got around to watching it yesterday. It had no business being that good considering the original was 36 years ago and sequels are usually terrible after that long. I liked that they didn't name a 'real world' country as the antagonist which I think gave them more freedom with the script while still being relevant/believable to the current era. I sorta got the impression that it was borrowing heavily from the Israel raid on Iraq's nuclear installation with F-16s IIRC where they barely had enough fuel even with aux tanks to make the round trip.

There's a lot of subtle, implied history between the two characters. For those in the audience paying close attention, there could be an entirely new story based on them. @@larryaccardo3134 yes, it's true what ur saying also. There's actually a lot going on in that scene: the complex of emotions Rooster is experiencing in that scene a) being mad at Mav (as u mentioned for pulling his papers), b) being present with the man who he thinks caused the loss of his father (rmb this scene is prior to Mav proving/doing the impossible) c) the emotion of almost having to witness/experience losing a teammate due to a freak birdstrike accident and another teammate with g-lock just prior c) reflecting on hangman's comment 'whoever follows u is just gonna run out of fuel' (reveals some history behind how rooster is as a pilot, as he may have "failed" a part of training or something else in the past) might be casting doubt creating the possibility in his mind that he could be the reason the mission gets compromised should he become squadron leader. The tension was luckily diffused with Warlock entering the scene to interrupt. Had that not have happened, the outcome could have been very different. Sorry for being tangential and rambling on.

According to estimates made by Scott Manley and others, the Darkstar aircraft was probably at an altitude of 120,000 feet when approaching Mach 10.0. The atmosphere is so thin there and the temperature so low that the speed of sound is only 447mph, so he was actually approaching 4470mph, not 7672mph. Also, you technically can touch the windshield with your right hand in high G turns since the stick is center-mounted in the F-18. It will probably be uncomfortable, however, because the stick is designed for a right-hand grip.

Another detail, in aviation. Pilots use compass bearings mosf of the time, instead of the usual 6 or 12. The felon pilot was telling maverick 3 3 0 He was telling him to go to bearing 330, to either catch up to the remaining f-18s or to land at another airfield for investigation

Top Gun: Maverick is really a great sequel to a great movie. It isn't often that a movie is as good as, if not, better than its prequel. The crew did an amazing job with recreating some of the iconic shots like beach scene, Maverick on his bike, etc. There are a lot of sequels or remakes that ruin the recreation of iconic scenes, but that didn't happen here and the hardwork paid off. Maverick is the first non-superhero type movie in a long time to cross 1 Billion dollars.

The aircraft is not an SR-71. The Blackbird was, in fact, decommissioned. The hypersonic plane in the movie is a mock up made specifically for the movie, and allegedly based on "blueprints" of real hypersonic aircraft in development (possibly the Sr-72)

11:36 Also, a couple of my friends who are Navy pilots weren't entirely sure but... they believe that the hand signals that the enemy pilot indicate to Maverick and Goose are as follows: First signal: "Follow me/ahead." Meaning that the enemy pilot could see Maverick was trying to signal they had no radio. So they told them to follow them. And when Maverick sees the second signal, while still saying he has no idea what they're saying, the enemy pilot signaled a three, three, and zero. Second signal: "Three, three, zero." Which probably was the enemy pilot telling Maverick to turn and follow them to heading 330 to return to base. And then his wingman moved behind Maverick into a weapons envelope to begin escorting their F-14 back to base.

Nice video man, really! Keep going. A small information for the obsessive nerd like me: at 4:11, the experimental aircraft is not an SR-71, but a SR-72, actually a drone still in phase of developement ny Lockheed. Nevertheless, you are absolutely right about the SR-71 being discontinued for the absurd cost of exercise, and also because the purpose was recognition but today any satellite can do much better at a fraction of the cost. I actually had the amazing luck to see one of those in Paris in 1989, when it was dismissed and Lockheed was finally authorized to show it to the public for a last time. I've seen it taking off, doing a low flight on the runway and disappearing in the clouds. Read the Wikipedia page about it, it is an absolutely amazing piece of old technology capable of mach 3.5 and 75.000 ft back in 1966!

Note: The SR71 Blackbird was not featured in this movie. The hypersonic jet in the film is a fictional successor to the SR71, the SR72 Darkstar. The Blackbird has a comparatively slow top speed of mach 3.3. I will say though that the film makers did a really good job on the details of Darkstar. Developed by Skunk Works, as most top secret US Airforce projects are, and all the details they show of the design are quite accurate to how an experimental hypersonic jet would likely be built. Based on a quick google search, it appears Skunk Works is actively developing a real SR72 and were consulted by the filmmakers for help making the fictional version in the film.

Thank you for your hard work and dedication. This was the 1st breakdown you've done that I knew more than 1 or 2 of. Maybe it's because I rewatched TopGun 5 or 6 times before seeing this one? I throughly enjoyed it. As a "bonus" you could have included that the movie was ready & the studio wanted to release it on a streaming platform but Tom Cruise refused. He said the money & time put into making the movie, audiences deserved the full theater experience & held it until it could go to theater.

I wanted to add to add two things. They used AI to create Val Kilmer's voice. But even in that scene he didn't need to say anything and it was very impactful. Just some words on the computer screen and his expression was enough to tug at anyone's heartstrings that Ice and Mav have become such good friends. But also, secondly, when Rooster says at the end "It's what my dad would have done," you could interpret that as his "dad" being both Goose and Maverick, bringing full circle that Rooster finally accepts that Maverick was doing his best to be a father figure to him. Such a great moment when they reconciled.

The one hand (at 6:10) touching the canopy only makes sense if Maverick switched hands on the stick. And though you don't necessarily "need two hands" on a turn (the throttles on the left wouldn't move if you take your hand off them), switching hands so the stick is in the left (to maintain the turn) would not be a good idea for a turn hard enough to form contrails.

One detail easily missed is when Rooster and Maverick were in a rush to get into the F-14, they didn’t arm the ejection seat which is above and behind them, which explains why Rooster couldn’t eject. I would assume unless you’re a real Tomcat pilot or actually took the time to learn the cold start process on the DCS simulator, one would know. Now I have no idea I’d that was a coincidence and it was just for drama, but they definite didn’t arm the seats. Nice inclusion of the air compressor to start up the engines though.

Nice overview. A couple minor quibbles. The SR-71 mistake has been pointed out. The other is the Rhino reference. The movie used the F/A-18E & F models, also known as Super Hornet. While Congress was told the SH program was just an upgrade of the earlier Hornet, it's really a new, larger and heavier aircraft. When brought onto the boats, the catapult and trap settings were very different from earlier Hornets (which were still in service), so they called it Rhino to avoid any confusion. The protruding nose was not the reason. (Another nickname is Super Bug, which brings back memories of the VW Beetle for those of us with gray hair.)

About the flying with the left hand, totally possible. The throttles are at Max AB and lots of pilots switch hands use the other one for additional leverage when looking back and so. Also, the roller is kinda right, but the jets would be so much farther apart. Not that close.
