AT the age of 15, Jay Walker went blind in a matter of hours. Now 18 years old, Jay’s condition is still a mystery to doctors who have not been able to give her a formal diagnosis. In 2017, Jay lost her sense of taste and smell after experiencing bizarre swelling symptoms in her face, then, in December 2018, Jay suffered swelling again. However, this time, the pressures in Jay’s eyes were immense. In just four hours, Jay went blind and was later told by doctors it was permanent. Jay’s life changed drastically and she is determined to keep moving forward. Now a college student, Jay’s future ambitions include writing a book about her experiences. Jay said: “I know how I want to feel and I know that I want to be happy and I know that I want to feel successful. And I want to feel like I've fulfilled something. And that I've made a difference in whether it be a million people or one.”

@@s133p3r0 Only a pessimistic person would take Washington's comment out of context like you just did. I think everyone else realizes what they meant by "I would 100 percent be her friend". For example, I would 100 percent be Adam Sandler's friend because he seems like he'd be a blast. Is that patronizing? No, its pointing out one's opinion that perhaps the other person has qualities and attributes that you would want to surround yourself with and befriend.

She handled everything like a boss. I’m sure she has her moments but to be able to have a great attitude and keep on smiling while readapting to a new way of living takes a lot of courage and strength. What an inspirational young lady.

When she spoke about waking up from a nightmare and taking few minutes for the nightmare to go away by shaking around, that part shocked me, i didn't realise that for a long time about blind people awakening from a nightmare, my prayers are with this REMARKABLE, AMAZING young woman, God bless you my dear❤🙏🏽

@@mygirldarby the intraocular pressure in her eyes was tremendous. They had to remove part of the orbital bones to relieve it. In such cases, high intraocular tension destroys the optic nerve head by compromising its vascular supply. In time, the picture of consecutive optic atrophy is seen by fundoscopy, and it is hopeless.

I don't even know what to say I'm overwhelmed with emotion I hope somebody reads this young woman these comments from the story because she's my hero. I suffered some catastrophic injuries from a car accident and they're nothing compared to losing your sight and she's inspiring me to do better and work with what I have been given and with what I'm able to do because she's doing so much more with so much less. People don't appreciate how much we depend on our Vision for everything and the fact that she's thriving and has so many goals has greatly inspired me and I'm grateful that I saw this story. I am sending you all the love and hugs in the world and I hope to read your book one day you are truly blessed. 🙏💗🇨🇦

I couldnt imagine going blind ...but this girl has such a good attitude and is able to live life that's awesome!I personally am a caregiver for a blind man and he cant do much just cause he didnt learn how to do things on his own.thats okay..but I think its awesome she can and is living the best life👍

I watched my dad go blind from conedystrophy and watching him learn how to navigate life blind. It really shaped me as a person as well. He passed away from alcoholism but it’s not easy. You’re amazing. There is a huge purpose for you. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ keep going love

Reading her history with frequent facial Swellings ( Edema ) and loss of taste and smell which exist mainly in the brain along with acute intra ocular pressure elevation that led to her blindness it sound like Multiple sclerosis especially that it showed two periods like relapse and remission so it could be a Multiple sclerosis variant with galucoma neuropathy that led her to lose her vision . Or it could be a whole new disease that involves the cranial nerves being attacked by the immune system or the neurovascular supply of the cranial nerves under the attack of the immune system .

Such an inspiration. I have severe astigmatism and have always counted myself lucky to be able to my glasses on and see, knowing lots of ppl don’t have that option. I started feeling sorry for her, but no, because this young lady is a warrior!!!! I honestly couldn't tell if she was blind , due to the way she moves around and do different things. Even though she lost her sight, she doesn't let it define her, she defines her life and that's beautiful!! I wish her the best, and I hope maybe one day she wakes up, and able to see. There is more to this story that we’re not being told. What was her prior sickness? Can this condition be caused by medications she was taking prior?

According to a gofundme she was diagnosed with; HSP at age 2, Colitis at age 3, Osteomyelitis at age 4 (had surgery to remove it), Osteoarthritis at age 5, and hospitalised without diagnosis at age 6, 7 and 8. Then at age 14 she lost her sense of taste and smell from an episode of swelling, followed by a new episode of swelling at age 15 where she went blind. Apparently there was a four part piece about her in The Kansas City Star, but it seems the family didn't appreciate the direction it went in as they felt it focused too much on the fact that they were on a caribbean cruise when (or right before) the swelling started at age 14. It's paywalled so haven't read it myself. That's the last update on the gofundme, but there was an update in The Kansas City Star stating she did in fact get a diagnosis from the Undiagnosed Diseases Program that explains it all, in 2019: Hereditary Angioedema type 3, that causes severe swelling (most often of the face or limbs, but can be anywhere) and abdominal pain. This diagnosis can be confirmed with genetic testing and it's genetic testing that determine which type, so the diagnosis wouldn't be made without genetic evidence. Though the facebook page set up to share her journey to a diagnosis don't seem to mention it and neither does this video, so idk. There is mentioning of Dr Oz wanting to feature the story, but I didn't check if it was ever made and this was just a few months before the pandemic began.
